a KH4 that brings it all together and beats the rest.
KH3 felt like it was trying to tie it all together, not only in relation to the story, but also in a gameplay sense. It really does seem like they were trying to make a "best of" by bringing in shotlocks, flowmotion and other stuff. I'd even go as far as saying Grand Magic and the arrow (?) system is kind of an iteration of the command deck skills from portable titles. To me, personally, that made the game bloated as hell, so I'd rather them focus on one or two core mechanics for the combat and polish them, if that makes sense.

However if we're talking about them taking the better aspects of each numbered title, vaguely speaking, and building upon them, then yeah, I think it would be nice to have big detailed worlds like KH3, a tight and snappy combat system like KH2, and perhaps more interaction with the environments through magic and other direct player actions that woud lead to bonus chests or hidden areas. God, I can't wait for them to release a trailer so we can have something tangible to speculate and discuss...

Whenever we get more info on KH4, I’m primarily looking forward to how it’s going to look on Unreal Engine 5 compared to how it looked two years ago.

Yeah this or DQXII will be the first games we see from SE on the engine I believe, so I’m excited to see what they’ve been able to do with it. Plus just seeing how they’re using current gen tech for the series. Even just the load speed differences are going to be a game changer for the game’s pacing.

i'm not expecting too much from the engine change on a visual scale, they might do some cool effects stuff, but the assets will probably just be improved assets from the reveal trailer. to be honest, i find it very likely that kh4 won't be all that different from kh3 when it comes to how characters and environments look on the 'reality' side. Modeling every single character in KH3 was a lot of work and I think some of you will be surprised at how much of that is reused/repurposed.

I disagree. Most of the things that people use to praise the game are the result of Final Mix. That isn't why they like the game but they cite those things to justify/double down when the reality is mostly what Launchpad has said.

i literally felt the same as a little child when it came out. what's crazy is that everything awesome about kh2's combat exists in that original release, but couldn't be fully appreciated without critical, which is effectively just a tweak to the numbers of the game and not much else. all the cool interconnectivity and good enemy design was there, but the circumstances didn't exist for it to be appreciated yet.

makes me glad they got to release a final mix.

-Along with the release of Re Mind, “Dark Road” was announced…

Nomura: KH Dark Road is a new service developed by the KH Union Cross (X) team in a double-feature operation. KHUX itself will continue, but Dark Road will shed light on Xehanort’s past, so please pay attention to both. We talked about this in the 7 Lights and 13 Darknesses Q&A but aside from the fact that Dark Road is a new project by the KHUX team, there are 2 other projects being worked on by other teams and one of them will be coming pretty soon, so please wait just a little a longer.

I saw this was floating around and I remember this story kind of being swept under a rug. I'm going to assume that KHML has been in development for a pretty long time. This article was March 27th, 2020 and was talking about 2 unannounced KH games. Presumably they were KH MoM and KHML, if KHML has been in development since 2019 that is pretty wild to think.

For more context, this is from the 13 Darknesses interview:

Q12 Will you tell us about any plans for future KH projects?

We still need some time with regards to main line Kingdom Hearts, but first up the KH UX team will have a surprising announcement tomorrow. Aside from the KH3 and KH UX teams, we actually have two new teams in operation, and from them one title will be coming surprisingly soon.

So you had KH3 team moving on to KH4, the UX team finishing Dark Road, the MoM team, and then most likely the ML team. Only other option we know of is the UX remake that was in the Nvidia leak. Who knows if that’s even still happening.

ML doesn’t seem like it would have started development in 2020 considering it took til 2023 to even have a prototype test, but you never know. COVID could have had a significant impact on that development. It may have even been paused entirely for a time or something.

honestly from a gameplay perspective, that game was straight ass. it's ridiculous how many flaws and issues kh2 fixed.
Yes and no. The more basic combat and zoomed in camera in a way helps make enemies more intimidating in KH1. Disney villains are more of a threat when Sora's just has a 3 hit combo to go on. I honestly feel it's a factor in why Disney villains fell by the wayside in this series. They simply didn't scale up with the gameplay advancements.

there were not any action games in 2002 operating on kh1's level. first 3D action game to even HAVE air combos. the minutia of enemy interaction is still at its height in that game, with cool secrets being found year after year. didja know that if you kill a fat bandit from the front while it's inhaling to breathe fire, they have a drastically increased elixir drop rate? so many little things like that. KH1's general feel is fast and heavy too if you know how to play it well, with it being the only kh where the timing of your button presses actually has an effect on your combo speed.

overall I don't feel like KH1 aged poorly, I feel like the games industry has failed to sufficiently go anywhere all that cool *since* KH1. and that's just talking about the combat and not the insane level of execution the worlds had

I strongly disagree with the notion that most games, KH1 especially, 'aged poorly'. If it had, no one would even play it or engage in discussion around it in this day and age. Street Fighter 1 is an example of a game that aged poorly because its mechanics were very rough around the edges and felt awkward to play. Super Turbo is still beloved, played in tournaments, celebrated and ported to modern systems while SF1 is only ever mentioned in passing like this post.

KH1 is a marvelously responsive, engaging and accessible game to play (hence it being ported almost 1:1 to modern consoles without any issues), and as any work of interactive or non-interactive media, you have to meet it halfway for it to be able to show you what it's going for. If you go in expecting it to play a certain way and get disappointed when it doesn't, that's on you.

Plus a part of me misses tech points! Now my memory on it is quite fuzzy, but I remember it being a pretty fun and special way to earn experience. Plus, it was a unique way to get encouraged to parry enemies.
