I'm a decent way through Star Wars Outlaws and, being a fan of the Jedi Fallen Order / Survivor games too, I realised that so often my hesitation with Star Wars being in KH is that I feel it'll be hard to make it feel like a fully realised universe when we're just dipping into a tiny bit from one of the movies.

These games let us spend over 30 hours immersing ourselves in Star Wars lore and environments, making us feel our place in the series, and what KH will do is just plonk Sora in the middle of the action where he feels out of place.

It's also hard to not try and compare Square Enix's take on Star Wars with these other games. And that's something that KH has had to an advantage all these years - there were no AAA Disney games based on the movies so there wasn't anything to compare Kingdom Hearts too. Now we have a lot of games to compare against, and not just Star Wars, but any Marvel games as well.

Big salute to Nomura and the team in their attempts to pull this off. I believe in you all 🫡

Reasons like this (among others) are why I'd prefer Star Wars characters to appear in a similar capacity to Final Fantasy characters. No worlds, no retreading movie plotlines, just encountering Din Djarin hunting Heartless bounties or fighting Darth Maul in a secret boss battle at the coliseum. That's what I've always hoped for but that's probably not what we're getting.

It's because of this that I'd want them to take a very Kingdom Hearts approach to it... don't adapt the Star Wars universe... adapt Return of the Jedi, with an extreme reverence and love for that film and ONLY that film. I don't want to feel like I've stepped into the giant world of Star Wars, I want to feel like I'm in the 1980s on the set of Return of the Jedi. I feel like those are two very distinct objectives and only the latter is achievable and beneficial to Kingdom Hearts.

Star Wars CAN be massive, but it can also be seen as just another stupid fuckin kids movie to be made into a level.

This has always been my main concern with these properties. It’s not that the stories themselves can’t fit in with the themes and plot of KH. But we just already have plenty of video game experiences set in those universes. In a vacuum where no other Star Wars games existed, I’d have no problem. But since we have some high fidelity games to compare against, it sets a higher bar for KH to stand apart.

Because of this, I actually think it is better for them to do a movie retelling than an original story. They have to ask, “What can we do in KH that other Star Wars games can’t?” Any developer can make an original story set in the SW universe. But only KH can insert new characters into the plot of the film and show us new angles of a classic story.

This is absolutely the way. The original trilogy is also the thing that is actually, like, influential and important to Nomura and Final Fantasy and also culture at large. I think it would feel disingenuous to pretend otherwise in KH...

Do we know that, if SW gets adapted, that they'd be doing the original films and cast, and not the new ones? I would've expected Disney to insist on their own movies.

It's guessed that the world used will be based on the 6th film, due to the AT-ST foot being in a forest that looks like Endor. But I'm just not sure how they'd contain Star Wars, even if they use just a single film, to one typical KH world.

The original films belong to Disney too. Because of the more universal love for them, they profit more on projects set around that era. Most of their recent projects have avoided the sequel part of the timeline. So I doubt Disney would force Nomura into adapting those films.

Based on the trailer, one of the settings is Endor from RotJ. It has some of the same features as the version of that planet from the Battlefront games.. So that’s the most likely contender if plans didn’t change.

I think a lot of it will depend on how world travel works in KH4. If there’s no gummi ship, it opens up a lot of possibilities. I’ve said it before, but I think it would cool if they broke RotJ into two separate world/world visits. The first would be Tatooine and the second would be Endor/Death Star.

It would still only be the length of one normal KH world, but I’m hoping we’ll see something like this in KH4 where Sora has to leave and come back to the various worlds.

I'm no Star Wars fan but I'd imagine they'd adapt Return of the Jedi cuz I think that's the most popular. And I'm only basing that off of how Return of the Jedi is the first title that pops to mind whenever I hear "Star Wars".

I'll be starting my LEGO Star Wars adventure soon enough anyway, hopefully that'll be enough to put me up to speed 🫡 (it won't be)

So what are the odds Astro Bot will have an in-game secret reveal of the PS5 Pro and the formal announcement will come the following week?

I think that's low, I don't think Sony would announce a whole console within a game first. I'd see it being patched in shortly after alongside the free DLC though

On the subject of narrowing Star Wars down for KH, they should emulate how Yoda moves as a puppet rather than make him all animated like the prequels. They have a unique opportunity to lean on the Jim Henson-y practicality of those old movies rather than chasing the animated fantasy of it all.

It'd be so cool to see KH chase the exact look of that movie. Give us some film grain and a few wipe transitions too. Go full cornball with this thing.

My thought is it being in a secret area that unlocks only after a fairly difficult challenge like rescuing all the bots. They could put it behind glass where you can only see the silhouette and have a timer counting down to the reveal date and time. Once fully revealed, you’d be able to access it. Or it could turn into another playable stage where you get it as a reward.

Tomorrow starts the first week of September, and with all the events that have happened recently, I think it is very possible that we will hear about ML soon.

This week could be a real possibility if they plan to showcase the game at TGS. They’ll probably reveal their TGS schedule soon, so it would make sense to release a new trailer and/or announce pre-registration first.

Cool to see that Magia and Aegis were originally going to be on the display cases. And confirmation that it was intended for Yozora to look like Riku. I hope we get to see Goofy and Donald fight Magia and Aegis at some point. Lol

It’d have to be added in a patch at launch if they’d do that.

There’d be too many variables for concerns, whether from reviewers leaking it or anyone with an early copy.

Having the Pro as a customisable skin for the PS5 mothership would be great too
