Forgetting Kingdom Hearts for a minute, I am genuinely baffled by their decision to have not done a games panel considering they have a massive sleight of games and DLC coming out from now until the end of the year, and then some

  1. Dreamlight Valley - Tiana Update - Out in August
  2. Disney SpeedStorm - Pirates of the Caribbean Update + Arbee race track - Out August 13
  3. Star Wars Outlaws - Out August 30th
  4. Disney RPG - Apparently out September 9th
  5. Epic Mickey Rebrushed - Out September 23
  6. Indiana Jones - Out 2024 (guessing Disney let Gamescom have this one?)
  7. Fortnite collaborations
  8. Marvel Rivals
  9. Marvel Vs Capcom
And that's ignoring if Marvel 1943 would be in a showable state again. Like they've had shows with a lot less before.

Edit: And Avatar Frontiers of Pandora DLC 2 - out Fall 2024
But that ONE BILLION DOLLAR INVESTMENT THO

At this point, I'm honesty not expecting anything on KH4 until next year. I do hope we hear something about ML soon though. I wonder if they are still aiming for 2024. Guessing development on it ended up being more work then they thought.

As for Sora in Fortnite, I do think that could be a fun idea, if nothing else.

I’ve shared this sentiment for the beginning. KH4 news this year is just a tad bit too early in my eyes. 2025 would be the perfect year to start dropping some bombs.

Only thing people should realistically expect right now is ML - y’know, the game that’s still on track to release this year? The delay really sucks.

Starting to think development may as well have started in 2022

I've done everything I could to not focus on anything KH that much but I still just feel annoyed. Probably because the more cynical and depressive bits of my brain think I won't even live to see the damn mobile game come out.

And speaking of cynical, here's my own prediction. Because of this prolonged drought, when we actually get KH4 info they'll just fall into the same stupid methods KH3 suffered from by way of putting the whole damn game in trailers.

They already did the announce early thing, so why not? The reasoning is still stupid considering post-KH3 the only "leak" that was correct might as well have been a lucky guess by some NVIDIA employee. Like come on, they put a fan name for Injustice 3 on there.

There's no reason to think that Missing Link won't have a short life like Dark Road. That game will surely flop.

Would be surprising if Kingdom Hearts actually makes it to Fortnite before Final Fantasy 7. If Disney is okay with their characters being in it, it's not them forbidding a Kingdom Hearts collaboration.

I would love Kingdom Hearts 4 to release late 2025 at least, but not gonna happen. It's gonna be 2026 or later. Hopefully the wait is worthy and it's not another disappointment like KH3 base game. After great games like NEO TWEWY, FF7 Remake and Rebirth, KH4 being another half assed title would be devasting.

You can add Marvel's Spider Man 2 DLC and Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac Games to the list. D23 has been a waste of time when it comes to expecting updates from single player games.

I don't think we'll ever see, say, Mickey Mouse in the game, for example. I think there's some characters that they wouldn't just implement as a skin, for branding purposes. I feel (purely a personal opinion) that Sora is one of those characters.

So far (correct me if I'm wrong), the collabs have extended to purchased properties and villains. I think once we start seeing Aladdin and Simba, then maybe. But even then... I dunno, I'll believe it when I see it.
Agreed, even though Fortnite is mostly a children's game you don't necessarily see things like Spongebob or Adventure Time , or whatever they watch these days.

In a spectrum between kiddy stuff like the above and manchildren's stuff like comic books and Star Wars, I'd say Kingdom Hearts leans more towards the former, even if a lot of the fanbase is manchildren anyway. Pulling this out of my ass but it would make sense to me that companies like Nickelodeon or Disney wouldn't want to risk advertising a shooter to a demographic that might be mostly comprised of 8-year olds, despite that game's playerbase being 8-year olds.

An overly strange and pessimistic take on mobile game that hasn’t been released yet, but okay.

One should hope that such a delay as this would be due to them wanting to revise mechanics and polish the game to make it as fun and accessible as possible - ultimately leading to moderate success at least.

Square and Disney aren’t doing any favours when it comes to solidifying our trust right now but let’s try to criticise the game for what it actually is whenever it does drop rather than assuredly concluding it’ll flop based on an initial delay.

It’s easy to forget that the only promise they made for Missing Link was a 2024 release and seeing as it’s still 2024 - they haven’t broken that promise yet. Doesn’t change the fact that we were most definitely meant to have the game by now though…

It's not that strange. Missing Link is clearly a more expensive affair from a production standpoint, while also seeming to ask more from players than other, cheaper to produce phone games. It simultaneously lacks a pick-up-and-play fun factor AND lacks a lot of the core attractions that KH usually coasts on. If it's expensive to make, troublesome to release, and doesn't acquire a substantial audience... It's joining its older sister in the graveyard, quick.

This is what gets me too. And these are just the projects that we know are coming soon. There’s also Star Wars Eclipse, Skydance’s Star Wars project, and completely unannounced projects. (I can see why the Insomniac games wouldn’t show up here since they are first party PS titles.)

Maybe past gaming panels weren’t as successful as they wanted them to be? Or maybe they just want to let the gaming studios do all the marketing work for them. But it still kind of baffles me that they did an hour long panel just for an Epic Mickey remake.

That all said, I am still gonna keep the hope going for next month for Missing Link news at least. A lot of things happening between now and then that could make space for some updates.

1. A ton of KH merch dropping last week of September/first week of October.
2. Visions of Mana, Disney RPG, Epic Mickey, and Star Wars Outlaws will all be released. All games that may have either Square or Disney’s focus right now.
3. Gamescom and TGS. SE hasn’t had a big presence at Gamescom in the past. But maybe since they skipped SGF, they’ll show up here.
4. Possible PlayStation State of Play for PS5 Pro
5. Possible Nintendo Direct revealing their next console

And I still think we’ll see a 2025 or early 2026 AAA title from SE at the Game Awards. May not be KH4, but they would be foolish to not advertise something. FFVII Rebirth will almost certainly be a contender for several awards including GOTY. So there will be a significant amount of SE fans tuning in. And all their currently announced games will be released aside from DQ 1&2 remakes, DQXII, KH4, Missing Link, and VIIR Part 3.

Cannot agree nor disagree on that first point because while I didn’t play the beta myself, those that did said it was a blast - especially the multiplayer raids.

Assuming these concern are present in the final release, then sure. But as of now, saying the game is sure to flop is aggressively pessimistic. Even more so when the latest iteration we’ve seen of the game is a beta from April/May.

I suppose some people will view this delay as some development issues occurring in the background. I’ll choose to view it as them cooking something substantial.

With Missing Link, they should have enough content created by now that they could at least be dropping teasers here and there for the Disney worlds, character profiles, etc. Literally just drop the renders for Remus, Nept, and Freya with some Scala screenshots.

There may have been some issues with the beta, but I don’t feel like it was by any means a trainwreck necessitating a huge delay like this. As late as February, they were supposed to start promotion with influencers in April. Which would likely put the release in May/June. Since the beta was delayed from January to April, one would think the full release would only be delayed by a similar time. That would indicate a September release. But I think we’d know by now if it was releasing then. Influencers clearly aren’t in the know about anything yet, which means it is probably at least two months away minimum.

It’s also been 10 months now since the last trailer. I know we aren’t entitled to updates. But what is the problem with a little transparency and communication? There are plenty of fans who want to hype up this game. But the longer they stay silent, the more people will feel alienated from the franchise. It’s just disappointing that neither Disney nor Square seem too interested in engaging with this fanbase right now. And I worry when one or both of these games aren’t as successful as they should be, they’ll act like the franchise itself isn’t lucrative rather than it being a result of their poor marketing and PR.

last i'll say on this because it really is a carousel, but, yeah, of course kingdom hearts fans who want to play a kingdom hearts game and continue to participate in exclusive kingdom hearts beta opportunities will say they enjoyed their time with the beta. More than likely, they played it at home, plugged in, tested it out, and enjoyed the novelty of a little 3D KH game, and probably benefited greatly from the freebie statues the beta handed out to make combat simpler (nearly all combat I've seen was decided by one or two statues).

A battery intensive 3D game with real time action is cool. A GPS tag game that will ask you on occasion to travel to actual locations is potentially cool. But the two ideas lack chemistry. Even a KH super fan will eventually be like "damn, why would I walk to 7/11 across town to fight this boss when I could just play KH on console". Toss in a healthy smattering of paid gacha mechanics and you have a recipe for indifference.

I have no horse in this race, I'm not playing the game anyway. I know it'll have its fans, and I'm all for people LIKING the game. It's just an interesting situation that this smaller-scoped project announced over two years ago is struggling to take its first breath, and has an audience that seems to have gone from somewhat interested to phlegmatic over the years. This isn't a cheap, motion tweened game that can survive on whales alone like the Union games. They have put millions of dollars and years of development into a project that probably needs a HUGE return to be worth it.

Best D23 ever, the park announcements were absolutely insane. Not streaming this D23 though was pretty bad, I get people paid thousands to be there... but like it's not an E3 or something. Overall I really loved the presentation they put on for the experiences though.

I live with Disney cast members so I thankfully got to watch the cast member exclusive stream. Some of the musical performances were a miss and I think it could have been like half an hour shorter. But I do think these announcements are a positive sign overall that the parks are getting some much needed love. I want to see the magic come back that was lost during the Chapek era.

Just wish gaming had a bigger section of the show or its own panel. Aside from Fortnite, it seems they forgot that falls under the Experiences business segment too. We didn't even get a gaming sizzle reel or anything.

Mobile and f2p games lasting for only a year isn't even an unusual circumstance in the present day; I don't think it's an insult to Missing Link's relative quality to say it's almost definitely gonna have a longer promotion time than an actual running time. That's just how the industry is right now, big companies pivoted hard to stuff like this to chase Fortnite and Genshin and are now committed to it even as the whole industry crumbles.

A mobile game is not a substitute for a console game. You do not have to pick one over the other. Gacha games are designed to be played daily, especially a game like Missing Link - one you can choose to play passively (at home). I'd recommend watching damo279's video on his 50hr+ experience with the game and how it seems to work because I don't think you seem to understand the full extent of the game's functionality and premise. And realistically, a KH super fan will gobble anything and everything KH-related up. It's really a casual player that would consider whether trekking to a local 7/11 is worth the premium chest or currency or whatever.

And adding on the highlighted quote - it's not like we currently have a fresh new console KH game to play? Unless you're fine with playing the same game over and over and over again.

It's a GPS game, aimed for those that actually enjoy leaving their houses and touching grass. Only thing as of now that I can see being detrimental to the game are the gacha elements. Outside that, the game seems really enjoyable.

I do understand what you mean when you say both lack chemistry, but that wasn't a complaint I heard from those that tackled the beta. I guess that'll depend on a person-to-person experience but I hardly see that as a reason why the game would flop. Not really a legitimate concern as of now.

I agree. But it's just far too early to say with conviction that ML will flop. Every mobile game I play is still going strong. Hell, I even thought FFVII Ever Crisis was gonna crash and burn after trying it out but it's still going strong with over 7M downloads as of December 2023. Even copped itself a nomination for a Best Mobile Game award despite it being suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper anti-consumer.

Y'know, with all the flack D23 is getting with the "lackluster" event and lack of KH - I'm to finally see someone that legitimately enjoyed it for what it was. Was it worth staying up until 6am for? Perhaps not. But it was an experience, that's for sure.
