BBS establishes that Unversed are spawned from negative feelings. Even more specifically, they all originate from Vanitas, who is the pure darkness of Ventus.

Aqua tells Terra: "What else is darkness but hate and rage?"

On one hand, hate and rage are negative feelings, so it would seem like they would attract Unversed. In Cinderella's world, the jealousy of the Stepsisters and Stepmom attracted the Unversed.

On the other hand, if hate and rage (negative feelings) are classified as darkness, then they should attract Heartless. In Deep Jungle, Clayton's lust for power (a negative feeling) beckoned the Heartless.

What's the precise difference between the two, and why would the Heartless show up in Deep Jungle but not in Cinderella's world?

First things first: Nomura's decisions on how the Unversed were supposed to be portrayed seem to have changed wildly as BBS went on, eventually simplifying. As a result, looking too closely at them will reveal all sorts of plot holes, caused when plot elements from when the Unversed were more complex do battle with plot elements from when they were more generic.

But the reason Heartless couldn't get to Cinderella's world is simple: the walls around the world are still standing. The Heartless can't seem to get in autonomously while the walls are still there (though people like Pete and Xehanort, who know how to use the Heartless, can let them in). It's the whole "This world has been connected" plot element from KH1. I always saw it as an explanation for why Heartless didn't show up during the actual Disney movies.

But doesn't that introduce other plot holes? Oh hell yeah. But put simply, the walls around the worlds are probably the stupidest and worst handled plot element in the series. Every Kingdom Hearts game since KH1 has been fighting against them, because they outright prevent the plot from happening! But BBS had to rely on them, since they were introduced to explain why the Heartless weren't rampaging across the universe in the first place. So Nomura tied himself up in his own knot. The walls around the worlds are inconvenient and prevent the plot from happening, because they were designed to stop the plot from happening, except sometimes you want the plot to happen, and then...

It's like a series-wide Candlejack joke. The walls are are a plot element that prevent you from having a plot, just like Candlejack prevents you from discussing Candlej

The two aren't really the same, though.

Unversed were created specifically as the result of Ventus and Vanitas's separation. They're Vanitas's negative emotions given physical form. I like to think of it as whatever didn't migrate to Ven or Vanitas after the split. Vanitas had full control over them and once Vanitas was defeated, the Unversed went extinct.

The Heartless are the product of a Heart falling to darkness, they are the darkness in a specific heart given physical form. The Heartless were a naturally occurring manifestation and flooded the Realm of Darkness...well, as long as it's been around. Heartless lead to more Heartless and once Xehanort broke the walls down, they flooded the Realm of Light. Of course they prey upon others who are weighed down by Darkness. In any case, without Xehanort's interference, the Heartless wouldn't be in the Realm of Light, and weren't until after Birth by Sleep. Once they were, they began destroying worlds and taking down people. You see that happening, actually, with your example. They destroyed Cinderella's world almost immediately, hence Aqua coming across it in shambles in the Dark Realm.

Almost nothing, from a design standpoint. Seriously, the only difference is that the Unversed are less... cool? They have less varied designs, but they could just be Heartless. The only reason they're in BBS is because the Heartless were established as a new issue in KH1.

Although pureblood hearts don't release hearts, that isn't to say that they don't have a heart inside them. After all, Sora was a pureblood and became human.

In BBS, heartless weren't openly available. So when they appear in deep jungle it was when heartless were introduced to the realm of light (xehanort expiremented with hearts).

The biggest difference is that Heartless' core is basically the heart. In BBS, unversed are created by negative emotions that are within darkness, causing them to have form of their own. but still, the name is "Unversed" or those that are not well versed. It appears that they are more "half-heartless" or surrogate heartless. they are controlled by vanitas because they are spawned from him, but they dont have a heart within them.

The biggest difference between Heartless and Unversed in-universe is that Heartless are a manifestation of all aspects of the Darkness of a heart while Unversed are "only" negative emotions. Darkness as a whole is more than just negative emotions alone.
The explanation Aqua gives to Terra in BBS is not false in the sense that hate and rage are indeed emotions that beckon Darkness and tend to strengthen it, but she oversimplicates the matter in her statement.

If anything, Unversed could be seen as some sort of pseudo/prototype Heartless which fits also the whole theme of BBS itself with laying the foundation of the core of the series and showing off the "prototypes" of later developments.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who doesn't like the concept of Unversed. I don't like the concept of Vanitas either honestly. To me both Vanitas & the Unversed are too similar to the concept of Heartless.

My Ideas:

1. Vanitas = First Replica Created by Xehanort. A Replica of Ventus Using the Dark Half of His Heart as a Base.

2. Unversed = The "Inner Keys" (Nomura Spoke of in an old Interview) Removed from the Keyblades at Keyblade Graveyard and Transformed into Monsters by Some Means.

3. Unbirths (Alt. Idea) = Some Kind of Bi-Product Produced from the Likely Reincarnation Process in the KH Universe. Or Perhaps Shadows or Lingering Wills of the Keyblade Wielders who Fell in the Keyblade War.
