Needless to say, when the results were announced, my teacher entered a depressive state for weeks, which I thought was just as well for bringing politics into a maritime history class.

I know very little about politics but I feel the need to mention this story whenever I hear Bernie Sanders, because I think it's relevant.

Back in junior year of high school (2016), my maritime history teacher was so convinced that Trump would lose that election. He had complete undying faith that Bernie Sanders was going to win and that Trump had a snowball's chance in hell of winning, because Bernie acts exactly like his late father-in-law. I doubt he was supposed to be doing that, but as someone who didn't really want ANY candidate to be president (Did we really need another Clinton in the White House or Trump? I would've run if I was of age and I know next to nothing) I feel like I should've stood up and told him to put his money where his mouth is and make a bet: If Trump wins everyone in the class gets +15 points on the next exam, and if he loses I lose 15 points on my next exam. Ultimately I didn't end up doing that, but it probably would've shut him up.

Needless to say, when the results were announced, my teacher entered a depressive state for weeks, which I thought was just as well for bringing politics into a maritime history class.
There was incredible delusion amongst Dems back then. Dems were absolutely convinced they had it in the bag. Every media company had Hilary at 90% or something. The polls... did absolutely not reflect that. Clinton was ahead of Trump 2-5 points for most of the cycle, well within the margin of error. The race was always a tossup. But the absolute arrogance of the Dems led to 2016.

I'm seeing this same arrogance right now. Biden is SIX POINTS behind Biden, and there's just this assumption that just because Trump is a convicted criminal and a proven-by-a-court rapist, that things will magically work out somehow. The same Trump that won the election after Access Hollywood. Dems have very little time to wake the fuck up.

Ideally the fact that Trump is a criminal who did stupid-ass shit like leave classified docs stacked up in a bathroom at a florida estate resort thing should harm his chances but this country fucking SUCKS.

The polls were always within the margin of error in 2016, and they didn't have time to reflect the impact of Comey's letter at that. Anyway, not all Dems thought Trump was an impossible win, but there were definitely a wide swath who had too much hope in Americans to take it seriously.

I don't think Dems are arrogant these days in comparison, they all know it could happen now, it's more pragmatism than anything. Jamming a different candidate in there out of nowhere is a guaranteed loss. The only thing that's different between this year and 2016 (aside from Biden being older than Hillary was and Biden having Incumbency on his side) is the general mood of the country is the opposite in some ways. In that year, most elections had been swinging right, whereas the past couple of years have shown many swinging left, often by a wider margin than polls reflected. Who knows if that will portend well for the presidential race, but perhaps it could help with the House.

It's funny to me to see you guys talking about "right" and "left" when both the old men are firmly right-wing 🤣

Not that I can talk, we've just gone from an incompetent right party to a competent slightly less right party. Joy. Reason to feel hopeful though: Labour MPs had their majorities reduced massively. Hopefully they never take the socialist vote for granted again.

Right and left light be the wrong axis. It's a liberal and a conservative candidate, with the leftist option left out.

Let's not "both sides" everything, they are different people. All you have to do is look at the SC Justices. Which are the ones that voted to overturn Roe v Wade? The Civil Rights Act? Grant immunity to the President? I'll give you a hint, it maps 100% to the D or R next to their names. When gay marriage goes next, I promise you all three Trump appontees will be part of that.

Are there things on which they agree on? Yup, absolutely. Gaza is the biggest flashpoint you can gesture towards. But come on. Biden used budget reconciliation to pass infrastructure. Trump used it to give the wealthy a 1 trillion dollar tax break. Biden used it to pass the biggest climate change investment the US has made in its entire history. Trump doesn't believe in climate change.

I am furious at Biden for a variety of factors, but make no mistake; I will crawl through glass to keep Trump out of office. The damage he did is immense, and the damage is still continuing (good luck ever getting rid of Citizens United now).

Honestly, thank goodness. Biden's too old, practically senile, and is probably gonna die if the wind blows too hard. And we all saw how he acted in the debate.

Harris is 19 years younger than Trump, 22 years younger than Biden, and uh...is at least more mentally sound than both. She can actually hold a debate.

Sorry Kingdom Hearts fans, but the only 'KH4' you're getting is 4 years of Kamala Harris!!!

I'm not a big Kamala fan for a myriad of reasons, and her loopy giggly ways make me deeply uncomfortable, but she can be a menace in a debate. Trump is fucked if he chooses to debate her.

JC, I am so relieved. It's still a really really bad position to be in, but not an absolute impossible one anymore.
