The way I see it, there are a few possibilities.

1. It is tied to Ansem. Riku wore it when he was possesed by Ansem.

2. At the scene in Destiny Islands, when Sora touched Riku's light, the suit, possibly being tied to Ven's heart, was transferred to Riku. Ven did wear it, it just appeard on his body.

3. Non-canon.

Any thoughts?

Non-Canon.

Seems to me it's just a suit that originates from Darkness. It's like the Keyblade, it's appearance differs from person to person.

But the Keyblade is the center-piece of the series. Who is to say that it isn't incredibly important?

Or, you know, it's all tied to Xehanort.

Vanitas has that suit, but who caused Vanitas' existence? Master Xehanort.
Riku has the same suit Vanitas had, but who caused Riku to wear it? Xehanort's Heartless.
If we use Common Factor, we may deduce that Xehanort's the cause behind the suit. But what exactly is the suit? I suppose it's a darkness amplifier, as in, it amplifies the user's dark abilities. I.E. in Re:/CoM whenever Riku wore the suit his powers would grow exponentially.

Funny thing is, Riku had that suit even before being possessed by Ansem SoD.
In the first battle with Sora, where he used the Soul Eater, he also already donned that suit.

It's most likely really "only" a darkness amplifier but it may indicate some connection to Xehanort as well.

It's also interesting with the battle stance, as they're also the same.
On a side note, when you can fight Riku on Destiny Islands in KH at the papou tree, has he alrady that stance there as well with his wooden sword?

No he does not.

But then the scene in Re:CoM showing young Sora and Riku fighting, shows that Riku does have the same pose as Vanitas though....so it's confusing.

EDIT:::::

It starts around 2:10. It shows Young Sora and Riku fighting each other. Although Riku doesn't keep the stance the whole time, he does change into it when stationary.

I see...well, one may also overanalyze things so it may be not that important in the end after all.

It's also not unheard of that people may have the same battle stance without being related at all.

That is after all Replica-Riku, besides, who is to say that happened at all? Namine has been messing with Sora's memories at this point.

Perhaps the battle stance is connected to the suit? The first battle with Riku, I accept he is wearing it. However in the scene where he gets possesed by Ansem SoD he IS NOT.

What? When he gets possessed by Ansem, he doesn't have the pose? What do you mean by that...when Riku fights (In HB) he always has that pose.

And for the first thing, it was meant to be symbolic. And I'm guessing it's also along the lines of how Sora perceived it.
I'd say it may mean something, but not as much as one may think. They could have easily just made Riku have his pre-darkness battle stance.
But oh well I guess.

MX also has that stance..

For the suit, i have no freakin idea there are too many theories for me to pick one or try to make one up.

I feel that both Vanitas's suit and stance were just ways to distract fans so his face would come as a bigger surprise.
Fans: "He has a suit like riku's, a stance like Riku's, so he must look like..."
Nomura: "Trololol he looks like Sora!"

that seems logical but it's not very original, and that's not really Nomura's style
