I think that's my only real gripe with this show. Bell seems to do a decent Spidey, but he's no Josh Keaton. But I'm glad they're using the Ultimate version of Peter.

I agree with you completely. When I heard that Drake Bell was doing the voice, I was really unsure, but after viewing the trailer in the OP and a commercial on TV, I have no doubts.

I just realized something thats kinda' funny. Anyone remember a movie a couple of years ago called Superhero Movie? (Made by the same guys who made Scary Movie, Disaster Movie, ect.) Drake Bell played the main character in that and it parodied Spider-Man almost scene for scene. Life's little coincidences.

Despite how god awful that movie was, that's a pretty funny coincidence.

You know, it's kind of sad that this show will be canned after a season or two like the rest of these MARVEL series that come out these days. Looking back at all the Spider-Man shows, there's really only one that stuck with me (my favorite) Spider-Man: The Animated Series ('90s). Even that, although it had a good run, was abruptly canceled with a cliffhanger. Let's take a look at all the Spidey toons there have been.

And now of course this one, Ultimate Spider-Man.

It sure was. I for one wanted it to continue ;_;

and the trailer for the new spiderman looks pretty top-notch. Can't wait for it :D

What's your reasoning for saying this'll be abruptly canned? I understand it's happened in the past, but I don't think that's reason enough to say it'll definitely happen this time.

That said, my heart aches for Spectacular Spidey T-T

It may be dated, but it's the longest running spider-man cartoon for a damn good reason. And Mark Hamill voiced Hobgoblin, so.

the show doesn't hold up as well nowadays

there were too many restrictions placed upon it because of moral guardians which led to too much contrived bullshit with inter-dimensional travel and other nonsense

^^This. Other than it being dated....I'm all for suspending one's disbelief, but it's just hard to enjoy those kinds of Spider-Man tales to me. So yeah, it's the longest running show, but that doesn't equate to it being the best by a long shot.

Spectacular Spidey>>>

EDIT: http://m.ign.com/articles/1214608

Peep #2 on this list. My point exactly.

Oh yeah IGN, the guys whose lists nobody trusts because they're always filled with bias? Sure yeah, use them as a source, totally credible.

ign's lists do suck but spectacular spider-man's plot still kind of sucked

^^I think you mean Spider-Man: The Animated Series, no?

And quiteMAD, guess that's just your opinion then. But you should really try watching TAS again alongside Spectacular, and then tell me Spectacular wasn't the best Spidey. Don't let the nostalgia fool you.

I watched the Spectacular Spider-Man from the day it premiered to the very last episode. I watched Spider-Man: The Animated Series again (thanks to Netflix) after it. I still think TAS was better. That's not to say Spectacular was bad though.

I've always found it to be extremely corny. Even back when it was running and I was young and I didn't find anything corny. So eh. To me, Spectacular Spidey is the definitive Spider-Man on TV, which is why Ultimate has such an uphill battle with fans. It might be good, but if it's not better than Spectacular, a lot of us will be extremely disappointed since it'll mean we could've been better off just continuing that show.

I was so turned off by Spectacular's poor character portrayal, and Sean Galloway's (the lead artist of the series cheeks-74 on deviantART ) art style is just not right for Spider-Man, in my opinion. It's too soft, too round. And I'm not sure how you can say Spidey:TAS is corny, and then give praise to this...

"Taint nuthin persunal, haws"...yeah that's exactly how Herman Schultz, a native New Yorker and professional safe cracker with a genius level IQ, would talk.

To me, Spectacular Spiderman is to Spidey what The Batman was to Bats. It's a fun alternative take on things, and it probably deserved a longer run than it got. But the definitive Spider-Man/Batman cartoon? Nah. But I do think Ultimate has the potential to be that definitive Spider-Man series. It seems to fill in those flaws between Spectacular and the 90s series.

The art style was the only thing I didn't like about Spectacular, and that's the one thing Ultimate seems to have over it right now. As for poor character portrayals....are you serious?

Shocker notwithstanding (and you assuming the Shocker on Spectacular is a native New Yorker is wrong, as is your assumption that someone with a genius IQ wouldn't have a dialect sounding like that. Prescriptivist much?), the only thing kiddy about Spectacular was the art style. And that scene isn't corny. It's funny as shit. TAS Spidey wasn't funny enough, and that's a big part of the character for me. It's one of the reasons I only kinda like Sam Raimi's Spidey and think The Amazing Spider-Man will be leaps and bounds ahead of it. It seems to be truer to the original source material.

Herman Schultz, the Shocker, is a native NY citizen (if he's not Herman Schultz, then he's no Shocker man I'm sorry you can't change that shit come on). There's no reason for him to have a heavy Texan accent. They made him such a stereotype he may as well be wearing ten gallon hat and spurs. And no, I know a southern accent =/= idiot. I'm from the south and have been fighting that stereotype my entire life (imagine my rage every time someone has Rogue say "shuguh" in every sentence). But the majority of the villains in that show were reduced to extremely basic character tropes/sterotypes. I understand this is a kid's show, but jeez. And the source material was not a comedy. Read Stan Lee's original run on Amazing Spider-Man, even though Spidey likes to crack wise, that shit gets real dark real fast. And without the cop out of bringing in Venom (because he didn't exist), which every single depiction of Spider-Man on tv/film has brought in and relied too heavily on. Green Goblin has brought infinitely more misery into Peter Parker's life than Venom ever could, but in Spectacular GG's is a foot note compared to Venom.

GG was a footnote? He was undoubtedly the main villain of the entire series. Venom was in no way more important than Goblin in Spectacular. The large majority of the mystery and suspense in both seasons was in relation to Osborn. As for the Shocker's place of origin, like I said, you're assuming he's from New York in the Spectacular universe. Something as simple as where he's from being changed doesn't really matter much in an adaptation, and definitely not when it comes to the Shocker, so.....eh. Long as everything else is straight, which it was, I don't see the reason for the fuss. The villains being simple stereotypes also doesn't hold much water with me as I felt Greg did great things with Goblin, Venom, Sandman, Doc Ock, Jameson's son, and Electro, and I'm sure even more would've been done had the series not, you know, been cancelled like it was.

As for Spidey cracking jokes, I've read Stan Lee's original run on Amazing (just did so this past summer) and I'm well aware of what you're referring to. If you've actually seen a trailer for Amazing Spidey, it seems to be even darker than Raimi's trilogy. But word on the street from those who have seen some of the footage at events like Comic Con is Peter is quite the smartass in the Spidey suit. Spider-Man has grown into the wisecracking hero I'm referring to, and it just doesn't feel like him without that aspect of him being played up. That's such a big reason of why I relate to him, so I can understand how it's not as important to others, but to me it makes a world of difference.

GG had screen time, sure, but the fact that everyone refers to the final showdown with Venom to be the high point of the series says otherwise. And the identity mystery thing was kinda ...misplaced. The mindbonkery GG does is related to the fact that he knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man, not that Peter dosen't know Norman is the Goblin.
No I'm assuming Shocker's from Texas. But he's supposed to be from New York. Where he's from changes his entire origins, and by effect his whole personality. It also begs the question of how an engeineer from Texas wound up as hired muscle for a crime syndicate in New York.
I'm not saying any of this was bad, mind you. Just that it was wrong, and I didn't like it.
And dude why you talking like that, you know I've seen the leaked comicon trailer come on bro. I wasn't talking about the movie. Just this show in relation to the comics, the source material. And I agree that the wise cracking sense of humor is what makes Spidey relatable, it's his ability to overcome insurmountable odds that make him a great character. It's when he reaches that point where even the toughest among us would go "I give up", and then he just keeps limping forward. That's where he really shines. I didn't see that in Spectacular Spider-Man (though there was that one homage to one of the greatest issues ever made http://johnmcnally54.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/spiderman-by-steve-ditko1.jpg, but the poor pacing made the whole thing pointless and wasted), but I hope to see it in Ultimate Spider-Man.
