The Video Game Music Thread

As my edit below states, this is a place to discuss music for any game series instead of just a standard "Favorite" thread.

You can talk about your favorite video game music or the music you can't stand at all. You can post remixes of music you think people will like or whatever. Anything to do with video game music (or even music not normally from video games that sounds like it is from a video game like an 8-bit version of Smooth Criminal) goes here.



I'm partial to the music in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the NES Castlevanias.

My favorite individual piece of music would be King Dedede's theme from Kirby's Dream Land.

I think that song stands out a bit due to the fact that Kirby's Dream Land was probably one of the first games I've ever beaten, so the final boss music is memorable to me in that respect.


edit: You know, I'd also like to dub this as a thread for any kind of gaming music if possible, since this is the kind of thread that gets remade every year or so.

there's a lot of great musical themes and my favorites range from the simple to the insanely complex... here are just a few examples of my favorites:

God in Fire- Dissidia 012: Final fantasy

Guile's theme- Super street fighter 4 rendition.

Ghost and Goblin`s main theme.

The price of Freedom- Crisis core: Final fantasy 7

Trainer battle- Pokemon Generation 4 (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum)

Dirge of the Fourteenth/Vector to the Heavens- kingdom hearts 358/2 days

I like Vector to the Heavens a lot. Probably one of the better boss themes in Kingdom Hearts.


So I went and downloaded this "remastered" album of the music from Sonic 2 (entitled Sonic 2 HD) since thinking of Sonic music, but as you could guess from listening to 5 seconds of every single track, the development process for making this album probably went along the lines of, "HEY GUYS, WHAT IF WE REMADE THE MUSIC FROM SONIC 2 EXCEPT WE MAKE EVERY TRACK OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD AND NOT AT ALL LIKE THE PREVIOUS STYLE OF EACH TRACK?" It takes some level of awful to pull that off. I'm impressed with how bad it is.

I didn't grow up with a SNES so pretty much any theme from a Sega Genesis game is something I'll like. I remember liking a lot of the music from Toejam & Earl.

I've never played this game as it is nippon-onry and an old, OOP BL game, but apparently it has some of the best music people have ever heard from the visual novel genre. I have to agree with them after downloading it. It's a very whimsical OST with a heavy European influence.

Also Kanako Itou doing the vocals? Perfect.

I think it would be a good idea if everyone checks out Smooth McGroove's channel. He does acapella's of video game music from Mario, Mega Man, Sonic, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and a whole lot of others.

Shunsuke Kida's soundtrack for Demon's Souls has such a distinctive sound—sparse and unsettling, but packed with power when it needs to be. It accomplishes so much with just a small ensemble of strings, brass, and a few woodwinds.

Above all, I love how well each track fits its respective boss fight.



After slogging through a poisonous swamp—brown, rainy, and full of deformed humanoids—you enter the boss chamber. This track starts playing, and in the distance you see a hulking, asymmetrical thing. It's barely visible through the hazy rain, but it's moving towards you, stopping for nothing.

Throughout the main game, you hear so many conflicting stories about Sir Artorias. Some laud him as a hero; some suggest that he fell from grace, and became a champion of the Dark. When you finally see Artorias in his last moments, and you realize the awful truth...

It's basically a James Bond theme, but applied to (in my opinion) a much more interesting setting.
