Now all we need to do is not elect an idiot who's gonna wreck all of this progress in 2016. Might be a little too much to ask for in this country though...
People should understand that Clinton may have brought us to a surplus, but the deficit he inherited from Bush Sr. (the one Republican president in recent decades who I thought was decent) wasn't nearly as large. And FDR? The guy was elected four times over the course of the recovery, and historians argue that we still didn't restore the economy from the Great Depression until a few years after the war (around 1948).
My point is, recovery takes time, and this is a worthy milestone. The more than half-trillion level of deficit is still pretty bad, but it shows that there's hope yet.
