Re: The Official BBS VA Discussion Thread

Yeah, and maybe the world really will end in 2012. Honestly dude, this is KHI, bitching about the VAs is something these people live to do. XD

At least all the complaining about the VAs aren't as bad as other fandoms...

I remember when everyone hated on KH2's voice acting.

It's the same thing that's happening right now.

I missed it but remembered reading about it, like how Xemnas spoke too slow, and was too busy copying the Japanese VA to do any good, and Xigbar's accent were teo I read about

All I remember is that KH2 had a few really terrible lines and Aerith obviously sucked total ass. All the other VAs sounded so professional after hearing Aerith speak.

I remember people complaining mainly about Xemnas, Xigbar, and Axel prior to the game's release.

I remember the complaints of Xemnas, Xigbar, and Aerith. I know I complained about it. I still do whenever I hear Aerith's voice.

I'm already convinced the BBS VA's have done a good job, so despite my complaints I am pretty satisfied. Especially with Sugar Spock.

Expect massive bashing.

They didn't do any dub version for the europpean versions of the game, while KH 1 and 2 was dubbed in their own language (french, spanish etc...).

While characters like Axel were still pretty much failed, characters like Xemnas tend to be better in those versions. I guess that's because they have more actors used to dub things, since they have to dub everything from the US and all ...

Anyway, when we hear how horrible Aqua sounds (so forced, it really sounds ridiculous and makes any of her line sound like it's a parody ... great...) and Terra is SO out of topic (I swear I thought it was Ven's voice before seeing Terra say "It's our dream" then I cringed hard) that they'll probably hate it.

Also, I'm sure most people (from everywhere) won't know it's Leonard Nimoy, and will totally bash MX's VA.

Anyway, I'm not sure we reached the disaster KH 2 was in term of english VA. I mean, remember the cool famous actors that actually made a good job in the first KH game, that got replaced by horrible voice actors... and then the new characters that were painfull to watch because of it. (Darth Xemnas, I'm looking at you)

I just listened to all the English trailers, and even the charm speech didn't sound so bad. I especially love everyone's battle grunts. I'm now listening to the Japanese equivalents, and they sound so weird and out of place XD

Ehh, if that many people have a problem, then they can just mute the game. I really like the English voices, and I think they fit the characters better. Of course, one of the main problems is they've taken the lines out of their original sound and context. A lot of people were hating on MX's Keyblade War lines, but once they heard the full speech, not just clippets of the conversation, he sounded much better. And with the proper music and in context, I'm sure everyone will sound better. As for the scene you're talking about with Terra, you do know that's a flashback, right? To a few years before BbS, so Terra having a higher voice there, than he does in game is justified. You'll find his other lines to be deeper, and quite well done.

Oh just let me guess, you're one of those guys who think it was an epic idea to destroy DBZ' OST and make some completely unrelated dub over it, and that prefer it to the original version, right ?

Ehh, if that many people have a problem, then they can just mute the game.

Where do you come from ? Is that a joke ? So we have to play without musics, sound whatsoever ? And why didn't they just make a good VA job in the first place ?
What about the europeans ? They will be forced to play with english voices that really don't fit the japanese version (that they like) and can't even have their own dub like in the previous games... The characters in japanese feel so real, you really can hear the VA are invested into the characters.

I mean, come on, "give my friend his heart back, or pay the price", and the worst line ever : "What did I do ? What did you do ?!" are self explanatory you know. There will always be people who will love whatever the american is doing to an original piece of art.

And I'm not blaming anyone for that, that's their total right. But understand that some people won't be pleased by it. I've done the japanese version and I have to say this english version doesn't seem nearly as good in term of VA.

Vanitas' laugh is another failure. The only good point about the english VA is that now, I actually can fully understand what they're saying. But that's the least you could expect, right ?

"What did I do ? What did you do ?" "You mean you've been spying on me ?" "so Master Xehanort and the unversed are connected somehow ?" "Leave my friends ALONE !"

Well, you are right, it's a little deeper. Though it's still a pretty bad delivery, in my opinion. But maybe that will be better with the music and all ... I just hope it's at least good enough not to make me cringe like I did while watching the trailer.

Also, I'm not sure it's really "years", I mean, they all have the same clothes, haircut, and all... Terra has the exact same body and height, so I don't see why his voice should be higher but I guess it can be "ok".

Umm, no. I actually despise the DBZ series as a whole, and what little I watched of it, I had no problem whatsoever with the VAing. The massive amount of pointless episodes turned me off. There wasn't really a need to start off with a personal attack, either.

I'm Australian, which is classified, games wise, in the European region. No, it wasn't a joke. If you seriously feel that the VAing is so horrible that it destroys the game, then the simple thing to do is mute it. And like what's been brought up in this thread, if you've spent all your time listening to the Japanese VAs, of course the English ones will sound sucky, and vice versa. I can't stand Aqua's VA in Japanese, I can't distinguish her from any other female VA in the same Launch/Jump Festa trailer. Terra's Japanese VA I feel doesn't fit his character' personality, and focuses too heavily on his physical aspects. Vanitas' Japanese VA I don't actually mind, same with their Ansem and Ven. MX I most definately prefer in English, as he actually sounds like a dying old man, which is exactly what MX is.

Those lines themselves aren't the fault of the VAs, but of the localisation team. Both lines made more sense and were more natural in the Japanese translations. And I'm sure you know that the VAs for both of them are brand new, and that this is their first time VAing. So I don't doubt there will be lines where they sounded forced(such as the charm speech) but that's because people in real life don't say these kinds of things.

And yeah, it's years If you look closely to Ven's face, he still has the blank look that he had when first arriving at the Land Of Departure, so it mustn't have been long after that I guess they decided not to make whole new character models, for a few flashback scenes. It's kinda like Lulu in FFX-2. She was heavily pregnant the whole game, yet still retained her FFX model, which obviously wasn't pregnant. Because she was really only in a few scenes(compulsory ones, anyways) they never bothered to change her model

If you think "You mean you've been spying on me?" and "Leave my friends ALONE!" were badly done... there's really nothing that can be done to help you. =P

The English VAs might sound toned down because they're not exaggerating as much as VAs normally do, but it sounds perfectly fine if you allow yourself to get used to it instead of immediately comparing it to other dubs.

I agree here to some extent. That " Being a keyblade master is all I've dreamed of" was just horrible. It sounds like a little kid. I personally don't like the way they reworded the japanese to english parts either. "What did you do, what did I do?" Yeah thats not what its supposed to say. And even the "leave my friends alone part" the voice just sounds so childish to me and Terra looks at least 16+ he should have more bass in his voice imo. Gimme japanese VA's with english subtitles and everything else in english and i'm happy. But hell i'll play because its a good game.

Re: The Official BBS VA Discussion Thread

Terra's scene at Keyblade Graveyard was excellent, in my opinion. The only line I've disliked was his "dream" speech, but that's because he's supposed to be younger. Everything else sounded great. But I'm not the type to obsess over voices unless they're really bad. Jason seems like he'll get the job done, so I'm fine with it. Plus Japanese Terra's VA sounds too old.

Oh, HJO has me really impressed as Vanitas. I was kind of worried if he would be able to pull it off, but damn did he ever! It's going to be a great performance.

Re: The Official BBS VA Discussion Thread

What's with all the hating here? The VA isn't bad. We've been listning to the JAP VA for over 9 months and we gotten used to it. Like Wheels, I don't like the JAP VA that much either. The english voices fit.

I mean, come on, "give my friend his heart back, or pay the price", and the worst line ever : "What did I do ? What did you do ?!" are self explanatory you know. There will always be people who will love whatever the american is doing to an original piece of art.

That line was actually pretty good. It wasn't bad at all. Not great, but good.

Vanitas' laugh is another failure. The only good point about the english VA is that now, I actually can fully understand what they're saying. But that's the least you could expect, right ?

This is a fail. Vanitas's laugh in the JAP version was just too high for HJO to pull off. The laugh is not as good as the JAP version, but its not a failure.

"What did I do ? What did you do ?" "You mean you've been spying on me ?" "so Master Xehanort and the unversed are connected somehow ?" "Leave my friends ALONE !"

I can agree with you on the first two, they were not so great but if you seriously say "Leave my friends alone" was bad then you don't know what you're talking about. If you think the VA's are that bad than you're just a troll.

...dude, Terra's VA's 28 and barely changed his voice (apart from the wooden Keyblade scene). Terra doesn't need to sound like a Gears of War character to have an age-appropriate voice. -_-

i don't think a handful of trailers is enough to judge the voices. I mean c'mon guys... I think Willa's voice COULD use alittle more enthusiasm, but i'm not sure about Terra's VA yet. I'll judge it fully when I actually PLAY THE GAME. ¬_¬

Well, I wasn't a fan of Terra's voice at the beginning but it improved as trailers came. When he says the "It's our dream" he was about three years younger so he was supposed to sound younger.

Casual gamers who don't even look in to the Japanese version of the game won't care what MX sounds like because it will be the only voice they have heard. And the fact his voice fits MX. Maybe I'm one of the few who thinks it, but MX is supposed to sound like the old man who will give you candy for being a "sweet kid" and shock you when he is evil. MX's Japanese seiyuu sounded evil the whole time.

The same will go with the rest of the VA's. Gamers who don't have a point of reference will be okay with the voices because they aren't bad. There will be people who, of course, have their personal opinions on the voices and hate them or like them regardless of the Japanese voices.

Now this is bashing. None of the actors have done a bad job. Sure, Willa sounded unemotional at the beginning and Dohring sounded horrible at the beginning, but everything has improved.

Vanitas' laugh was done perfectly. Because his voice actor doesn't have the same vocal range as his Japanese seiyuu (nor do American people laugh like Japanese people), it wasn't going to be the same.

Comparing the Japanese voices to the English voices is like comparing Star Trek to Star Wars. They are their own thing and meant to be taken as such. I take the Japanese voices one way because I find them to be fitting of the Japanese version and the English voices another way because I find them fitting for the English version.

And again I will say, the "It's our dream!" scene was three years in the past.
