The Legacy
Within the core of the world of Oracknus slumbers the Olden Beast, a monstrosity of terrifying power, which flattened cities, toppled mountains, and burned forests to the ground. Banished and chained to the world’s center by the Seven Sages, the Olden Beast sleeps deeply, dreaming of the day it will be able to rise once more.
As centuries passed, the Beast became more than a monster; it became a source of power. After the deaths of the Seven Sages, their souls transformed themselves into gems, one of each color and the size of a foothill. Each jewel embedded itself in the back of the Olden Beast, and a continuous energy emanates to the surface from these gems. These energies govern our natural world, and all faults and benefits are due to them.
Occasionally, Fate sees fit to instill these energies in the heart of a mortal, a human being. Those born with White Souls are given a fragment of the power of one of these energies: be it fire, water, earth, air, lightning, ice, darkness, or light. Once this amazing phenomenon was discovered, a pact was made in the kingdom, and the Delta Battalion was established. This group gathered men with these energies and trained them to become an Acolyte, a warrior skilled in the art of using his power. The Acolytes rid the land of its constant infestation of wrongdoers: necromancers, rogue sorcerers, demons, and the like. But being independent from the government’s rule individually, some Acolytes left the Battalion to become mercenaries, or other professions. This caused no problems, for naturally people of White Souls generally were noble and good-hearted.
The Story
A twist in destiny occurred, here in the tenth century of Oracknus. A group of people were born with unique souls: not white, but not the normal green either. These souls were Blue Souls. No one knew what this meant, but it was considered important to immediately put them under the care of the Delta Battalion. The Blue Souls were incredibly talented: genius in both mind and body. They excelled greatly, vastly surpassing most of the most skilled White Souls. But they lacked one significant thing: nobility, humility, and kindness. On the contrary, these Blue Souls were overconfident, arrogant, but most of all, cold. Once achieving the highest of ranks, the Blue Souls left without a word. The world was quiet for three years, so much that an imaginative youth could almost hear the breaths of the Olden Beast as it slept.
Chaos erupted three years later. The Blue Souls had returned more powerful than ever. Out of pure conceit, they named themselves the Cyan Sages, in mocked reverence of the Seven Sages. The Cyan Sages wreaked havoc in one city after another, dealing powerful blows physically and mentally. The world was in a state of panic. But just as abruptly as it had begun, it stopped. The Cyan Sages withdrew wordlessly. It is now rumored that they lie in wait, plotting.
The Acolytes were charged to find and annihilate the Cyan Sages. Some were devoted to the cause, others were half-hearted about it. When news broke out of the Cyan Sages’ plans to awaken the Olden Beast, utter obsession took hold of the Acolytes. The Cyan Sages had to be found and destroyed before the ultimate doom of Oracknus became a reality.
The World
Oracknus is a beautiful land, blessed by Fate. Upon the arrival and civilization of human beings, a kingdom was formed, a kingdom that still stands today.
Mhassus
A kingdom of mountains, rivers, forests, and other lands, this realm is ruled by King Reylus and his advisors. Its primary industry comes from the various crafts and artisanships that populate the area; its exports all manufactured goods to its other cities. It is densely occupied, and contains many urban areas, but the government strongly believes in environmental preservation, so the beautiful countryside remains untouched. Mhassus is relatively chilly, especially in the winter. Only summers provide mercy to any traveler in this kingdom, so tourism is plenty during that time of year. The Mhassus military is large and skilled, particularly in archery and artillery. The capital of the kingdom is Rhalla, a giant city situated on a foothill in the middle of a valley and home to over five hundred thousand people.
Other Major Cities:
Valorus – a port city on the west coast. It is home to the Mhassus navy, a main departure and drop-off point for merchant and cargo ships, and a residential area for artisans. It is rather quaint, despite its rugged population, which is half that of Rhalla. The city is vulnerable to pirate attacks, but its defensive system is greatly efficient. Let’s just say the pirates had to walk their own plank afterwards.
Nojka – the home of magic. Magicians of all kinds gather here to chat, teach, practice, and all other manner of magician behavior. It is the third largest city in Mhassus, and the most merciful to nature.
Gray Leaf City – this odd city is found on top of a gigantic gray leaf that floats on an even more gargantuan lake. It is mainly a residential area and tourist attraction. But this city is also known because it has the most advanced military in the Kingdom, besides Rhalla. Many unusual fighting arts were invented there.
Klax – an underground city in the Jurmistus Desert, where it is safe from the sandy dunes’ raging sandstorms. Its center of skill lies in the mining industry and many recruits for the army come from there. The entire city is surrounded in a twisting underground river, with a waterfall on the west side.
Frostsmit – on the edge of the Borronus Glacier lies this city of wonders. Their chief source of funds are lunar crystals, which are more beautiful than any diamond on the earth. Recent reports suggest that some strange activity has been occurring in Frostsmit, but Acolytes have not yet been sent. The Borronus Glacier is also the hallmark of the famed Legend of Chill, the tamer of the ancient dragon Frostedge. But it’s only a legend.
Geography
The Stone Pinnacles – a mountain range that stretches throughout the entire kingdom. They range from medium to monstrous height and are home to dreadful creatures. There is a gap in them known as the Great Gap, where travelers may pass through without having to risk their lives hiking through the slopes and getting torn apart by golems.
The Jurmistus Desert – named after Jurmistus the Wary, a scholar who died of thirst and excessive paranoia in those very dunes, these plains of sand pose as a threat to treasure hunters. Dangers include desert serpents, sand wolves, sandstorms, and poisonous oases. The people of Klax, crafty as they were, utilized the desert to their benefit, so it is theirs to enjoy, so to speak.
The Borronus Glacier – most commonly known for Frostsmit and the Chill Legend, this glacier is the kingdom’s oldest landmark. It is barren, save for the people of Frostsmit. Being so, it is part of the reason why the Chill Legend was so farfetched; there was no food sufficient to feed such a dragon. The only danger here are the carnivorous penguins; small, but fast and deadly, and good in numbers. Many a hunter has tried to exterminate them, but it ended bad for the hunter. But anyway, like the Jurmistus Desert, the Borronus Glacier has its share of profit: lunar crystals.
Leafmane Forest – a mass of dense, uncharted foliage, as dangerous as the previous geographical locations. No one has actually returned from there to tell the tale, so its mysteries have been assumed to be lethal.
The Wastelands – let’s not go there, shall we? We want to stay alive, and speaking of that accursed place is enough to burn your innards.
Lucenus River – a gigantic river that flows from the kingdom’s north end to its south. It also many tributaries, none as magnificent as their source. It is rumored that a peculiar creature named Lucenus haunts the waters and prays on remote village by the full moon, but there are too many wives’ tales these days.
The Delta Battalion
Acolytes are divided by ranks from A to C, with A being the highest and C the lowest. Each Acolyte is unique is own special way when it comes to fighting style, and though many may have the same element, each one has their own of using it, which is why they are titled the best fighters in existence. Acolytes are also paid nicely, but since the mercenary business recently arose, Acolytes have left to pursue this more profitable job.
The Delta Battalion is governed by a council of five A ranks, individuals renowned for their wisdom and strength. Acolytes swear an oath to the council, but only the council, therefore they are independent from the government, except for common law.
