The 25 character limit

All too many times I've seen (25 characters) or something to that effect in a post... why not just get rid of it? Is it really that big of a deal? I get it's to discourage spam and promote productive discussion, but this is literally the only forum I can think of in my internet travels that implements this.

It's really there to promote discussion, and I think it works. Can you imagine if we had twenty five people writing "lol" under a forum insanity post? I would personally hate that.
