Yeah I hope people still support it if they can afford to. This game’s performance could very well determine the future of Mario RPGs (along with TTYD Remaster.) And a true sequel to this one would be a dream come true.

I mean, that's basically what the M&L games were. They were made by some of the same staff that originally created SMRPG.

They’re spiritual sequels (as is Paper Mario) and I love them. Not the same as a true SMRPG2 though. I want another game where you have clear continuity with the original, returning characters like Mallow and Geno, nods to other Square Enix RPGs, etc.

I’d gladly take a new M&L game too, but that franchise is dead at the moment itself. The only chance at revival it has right now is these two games doing well enough to inspire Nintendo to bring it back. But if I had to choose, I’d want SMRPG2 over a new M&L game. Mainly because the latter has already had plenty of sequels. Same with Paper Mario.

I unfortunately never had the chance to play Inside Story or Dream Team. Played some of Paper Jam but never finished. Superstar Saga and Partners in Time were amazing though and two of my favorite all time games. I wish we’d gotten a Partners in Time remaster before they shut down.

If a new turn based Mario RPG were made, what would you want it to be like? Something like SMRPG, Paper Mario, M&L, or something new entirely?

I’d be perfectly happy if it followed a similar format to this remake, keeping the isometric level design, etc. Maybe just make the environments in each zone seamless rather than broken into separate rooms. Alternatively, I’d be down for something that has a full-scale 3D world design like DQXI while still having a lot of the platforming/puzzle elements and combat system from SMRPG. And maybe have traversal abilities like the M&L series for platforming and puzzle solving. I’d also like to have a bigger party with a mix of new characters and some of the traditional Mario cast like Luigi and Daisy.

Generally I've had the brainstorm of a M&L on Switch where Mario is the left joycon & Luigi is the right joycon. Thus both brothers have multiple buttons & their own stick for a variety of options. Maybe throw in a B plot where Peach & Daisy.

For me, I’d rather it be at least a five person party again. I want it to capture that feeling of a ragtag group of heroes on a journey together vs. just the two brothers. I like when there are other characters that can provide commentary, make quips, etc. considering M&L are pretty much silent protagonists.

I think it’d be fun to see Luigi leading a party of his own for a change. Maybe have a plot line with Luigi, Geno, Mallow, and Daisy and another with Mario, Peach, Bowser, and a new original character until they eventually all meet up mid-game or so.

On a separate note: Putting this behind spoiler tags because it came from the leaked copies of the game, but it is only info on someone listed in the credits.

Tetsuya Nomura is credited as a Character Supervisor for the game. He received a Special Thanks in the original of course, but seems he had a bit more involvement this time around for… something.

I feel those should've been bosses in a M&L at some point. Like if the Axem Rangers are parodies of power rangers/super Sentai, and Koopa Bros. Riffing on TMNT, then the Warriors Bros. Continue the tradition by being parodies of the Mario Bros.

Of all of the script changes in this version, I gotta say the one that irks me the most is the weirdly insistent use of the phrase "Bowser's Minions". Not as a general descriptor but as the official defacto name of the faction. So 1st of all, when did "The Koopa Troop" became not kosher with Nintendo? 2nd, the way it's worded everytime seems so forced & unwieldy.

Like in the above pic, why is Bowser suddenly speaking in the 3rd person? Could they seriously not found a better way to word this text box? Why couldn't he say "my minions" instead or something to the effect of "the leader of the baddest gang of monsters in the land"?

Or take a page from Eggman calling his own faction the Eggman Empire & dub your crew the "Bowser Battalion", so it actually sounds like he's still saying a proper name for a group. The possessive phrasing makes it incredibly awkward & really "Bowser's Minions" is such a bland boring name to make the official one. Like so many other facets of the Mario Universe that Nintendo has decided to water down over the years.

The only reason I can think they changed it is to line up with Superstar Saga+Bowser’s Minions. But it definitely sticks out the way they just copied and pasted it in rather than making it an organic part of the text.

That aside, the original wish just feels like it shows more character. Like if you cut out Mario’s name from both, the first one would still very clearly be Luigi. The new line could be anyone.

Besides a few minor details like that though, this was overall an amazing experience reliving my first favorite video game. I love seeing so much more detail brought to life that I previously filled in with my imagination.

I would like to see a hard mode added just for a little extra challenge in replays. I didn’t have a single game over the entire playthrough. I’m sure that will change with the new post game rematches, but still.

P.S. The Yoshi race is still the bane of existence. Even with the added indicators, I couldn’t get it right. Finally looked up a trick that said to double tap A and B rather than single tap. Maybe that’s what the game intends as it actually worked.

Someone in the comments said that change is more accurate to the original Japanese script. That could be the case with Luigi’s wish too.

Also, while I loved seeing the classic version of the closing credits parade, I was kinda hoping to see Luigi in 3D. It would have been nice if beating all the post game content unlocked a full 3D version,

Yeah, Woosley was known for taking liberties, (I read somewhere he was the original translator. Say whatever you will about the guy, his later translations were pretty good really imo.)they may of well..overcorrected there. (The new translator just may of been too literal/not willing to localize in spots.) Any way, I got my copy and just got to Rose Town.

I think trying to go for 100 Super Jumps is one of the worst mistakes I’ve ever made.
