With the news of college students being able to conceal firearms, what are your thoughts on it? But besides that specific point, let's talk about where this fits in: self-defense. Are YOU ready to defend yourself? If so: how? Have you ever had to defend yourself? Be it against a bully, burglar, sex assault, you name it.

I had to defend myself against a bully, many of times. One of my once friends stole my stuff and I caught her. Does any of that count?

Self-defense is one of the things that I have thought about, especially since I live alone with my cat. I had to call security a few times. One of those times was when I heard some shouting. I opened the door and saw my neighbor's son with a large knife. He told me that he had to scare off some potheads because they were harassing his father, my neighbor.

I've had a few times where I had to call 911 at my old apartment. I never let any of those creeps that I ran into in my apartment, but it was still pretty stupid that I answered the door for them. I am glad that I moved since the only thing I had protecting me was a screen and a sliding glass door.

One of those creeps was a black guy, he came pounding at my door at like two in the morning. He said he needed medications for his wife since she was having a seizure and he couldn't afford the medication or some BS like that. Thinking back on it, he should have taken her to the emergency room, which was just across the street from my apartment complex. I gave him some dollars and he said he would pay me back, which he never did.

Another time was with a Hispanic woman. One of the neighbors that I talked to following this event the day after said that his daughter heard some woman scream. From what my neighbor and I piece together, it was probably the woman. She, from what I heard was fighting with her boyfriend. She got away, and showed up at my apartment. I answered the door and she demanded water. I gave her one of my cups of water, she walked off.

And, the last one had to deal with some bum that showed up at my door at four thirty in the morning. He wanted to be let in and practically scared me. I stayed in my bedroom and called 911 on my cell phone. The police came and all they could do was escort the bum off the complex.

Oh, and I almost forgot. There were some other unsavory encounters that I had, but they weren't at the apartment that I was living in. I had a roommate back in those other apartments, which both happened to be downstairs. The apartment that I was living in with those creeps to decide to visit happened to be on the second floor. Anyways, the most startling out of all of them had to deal with some Hispanic male.

He said that he was watching an American football game with a friend that had invited him over to our apartment complex. I am not sure what apartment was the friend's of this guy. Anyways, he had gotten into a brawl with the friend, who punched him pretty bad. He left the friend's apartment and wandered over to mine and my roommate's apartment. My roommate was an elderly woman that had her two-year-old granddaughter visiting. Thankfully, the granddaughter left before this bloodied guy showed up.

I heard pounding at the door and opened it wide open, pretty stupid of me. My roommate, her friend and I were startled to see this guy standing at our door. He was covered in blood. My roommate shut the door, lectured me on why I did this, and kept the window briefly open while one of us called 911. The guy told us the story and the ambulance showed up. We called the maintenance the next day. I showed the landlady the blood stain left by the bloodied bum and she got it cleaned up.

I honestly worry about my safety, especially since I have a cat to take care of. I have called security a few times, but I really don't trust myself with a gun. I have thought about taking karate, but nothing has came of it. I have also thought of getting pepper spray and I mostly stopped going out at night. I have heard that if I get attacked that I should use my keys as weapon and scream very loudly, so that somebody could hear me.

I also had something happen at Walmart a few years back. It was night, I was putting away a shopping cart and I saw this large maroon pickup truck. There was this black guy giving me funny faces. I got scared and ran back to my caregiver, who was thankfully parked close by. I told her about the guy's and I ended up telling security at a close by Dollar Tree. Maybe, I was overreacting. I think there was another guy in the driver's seat.

That would ge a smart thing to do Dreaded (scream loudly). I have upstair neighbors who literally I think sometimes that they torture their children. We would hear screaming, crying, pounding, yelling EVERY DAY. My father even called 911 once because it got so bad. Yet the family acted all innocent like and the police left! That was awhile back. Now *knocks on wood* they're quiet. Idk why, but they are. They all still live up there, but it's quiet. Weird.

Oh hey, I was just talking about this earlier. So I'll just say what I've already said:

Thanks to all these recent events, something's become pretty clear to me: you really can't rely on others to protect you. The police aren't gonna protect you, they're there to clean up the mess and investigate afterwards. Your well-being is your own responsibility. And I'm not planning on being a victim in a massacre.

I can't say that I have the means to defend myself yet. I'm a stick-limbed weakling who isn't old enough for a concealed carry weapon. And I don't know if I truly have it in me to blast someone's brains out in self defense. Never tried it, can't really say. But the idea of carrying a weapon for protection doesn't bother me, and I want to get a concealed carry license when it's possible.

jesus christ what do you have against PoC. like, honestly. i know you have some shit going on but you seem pretty discriminatory and judging.

also i agree with what black osprey said basically. with a new incident happening everyday, you really need to be prepared in case something happens. no one is going to do it for you.

i can't say with certainty what i'd do in a life or death situation, but you can bet your ass i'll try my damnest to make sure its the other guy.

My town is fairly quiet, but I have thought of this a few times. Since one of my brothers has depression/anxiety disorder (he's been suicidal at times, so guns are banned from the house since no offense guys, when guys off themselves, statistics say you usually go for a gun, and girls go for the pills), we have all guns banned from the house that don't have to do with video games.

I do carry mace when I'm alone, and if I got my own place I'd proly have a Loisville Slugger in the closet. I took judo in college, tho I'm horribly rusty; I'd like to take another class in that. I'd also like to carry a stungun if that's legal in my state. (that's not something you can off yourself with so I think that'd be safe to have around that particular brother.) Also if I was alone, I might consider learning how to shoot. When I was in college I'd carry a flashlight after dark; that was not only so I could be spotted, it was so I could bash someone over the head with it if I had to. I'm thinking about finding a Maglight for that reason now a days, tho I'm rarely out of the house after dark. ^^ (Good, heavy flashlight and would be good for that.)

I just hope those students know how to actually use a gun. Too many people have itchy trigger fingers. If it's a campus thing, I'd prefer armed trained professionals who knew what they were doing. As for defending myself. Meh, I really haven't ever had a reason to yet, but my paranoid ass keeps a knife beside my bed at night, so I'm a little prepared, at least.

1. You've been careless. You don't open your door to the first stranger that pops out.
2. Karate is for defending someone else, not self-defense. Taekwondo is what you're looking for.
3. Yeah. Get pepper spray.
4. You can use your keys to hit someone in the eyes. Also, scream "fire". Psychologically, people are more prone to respond to that than to to help.

You're supposed to shoot your assailant in the arms, legs or thighs, not outright kill them. That could very well earn you a trial for murder. Granted, you can plea justified self-defense. Other than that, I can understand a scenario where someone is gonna cause a mass shooting.

I concur. One thing is to be cautious, another to be outright prejudiced.

My dad has a cold weapon in every vehicle. There are two sluggers in the cars, and I think he has a golf club in his truck.

Really?

What is PoC?

I do have a wooden sword and some knives in case something happens. It probably won't do me any good since they are put away and if the guy or guys has a gun.
PoC is Person of Color.

You could try for a stungun. Those can reach up to 20 inches long, I think.

I am sorry if I came off as a bigot. I was just describing the people that came to my door. A stungun might work. The guy that came up to my door at 4:30 am, well he's a white guy in his late fifties. My neighbor and I had problems whim before. His name is Troy, I think. He pretty much nearly got threatened with a baseball due to scaring my neighbor.

Have you ever shot a pistol? I can tell you from person experience that those things are very difficult to shoot with accuracy, and that's just with an unmoving cardboard target. Now think about a moving target a running person with his limbs flailing about, coming at you with a knife. Do you take your chances with shooting him in the limbs, a shot that has a high probability of missing? No. You aim for the center of mass.

And to be honest, the idea of going on trial for killing in self-defense doesn't really bother me when the alternative is getting robbed, raped, or murdered.

Good point. Though the best spot to shoot would be the biggest: the body. A shot anywhere there would surely throw him or her off.

You should only shoot if your life is in danger and stray bullets can be very dangerous so you should shoot for the body. Cause if you shoot them in the leg they can still attack you.

Won't there be trouble if the bullets strike an artery? I believe that arteries are located in the arms and legs. I think they are close to the armpits and thighs.

A bullet impact can physically impair your assailant a bit.

Sure it can but the reason you are shooting is to disable the threat and the easiest way to stop it is shooting the chest. It takes a skill shoot to shoot right at the artery.
