Rose Red offers a revised take on the classic Snow White story, in which Rose Red journeys with the seven dwarfs in search of a way to break the "Sleeping Death" curse put on her estranged sister, after Snow White eats the infamous poison apple.

I know all of you always see me bashing Disney's latest fetish for these atrocious live action films, but please enlighten me and try and defend this. This sounds as stupid as that Prince Charming movie..

...What the fuck?

I'd rather have an animated sequel for Snow White than this.

Why have they not announced a Lion King remake yet? I'm really beginning to wonder...

On one hand, I'm interested in the concept. But the fact it's "staying true to the original Disney film" makes me believe it's not really gonna be... well, different and interesting enough. Say what you will about Maleficent, but there was at least a lot of different things they did in it than what they did the original Sleeping Beauty.

If you want a good, different Snow White live action film, watch Snow White: a Tale of Terror.

Wait what? Snow White has a sister? Since When?

See, this is exactly why a Rose Red film is needed because she is actually a thing. I'm happy to see this character actually get some love outside of the Fables comics. No one else seems to care about the character. And why not Disney? Every other studio is turning Snow White into absolute garbage, like that Huntsman crap. If we must have another Snow White film, let it be by the original gangsters.

I dunno, Rose Red honestly sounds like a porn star name to me

Yeah it tried different things, and they were garbage that went against the very basic character of the fable in making the mistress of all evil a good/misunderstood guy. Please, they wanna do different, then try something new with a new IP like the Disney I used to know would.

You do know the fairy isn't "the mistress of all evil" in the original tale? That's Disney-only.

Agreed, I'm optimistic by the premise of this. Rose Red has no animation counterpart so Disney has complete creative freedom to her character.

This right here. She's just a fairy in the original Grimm tale. Besides, didn't Disney at one point cite Wicked as inspiration for the Maleficent film, a musical based off of a book that takes the Wicked Witch and shows she actually wasn't completely evil but misunderstood?

I'm all for new IPs as well as underutilized IPs getting films... but like, I'm trying to think of new IPs Disney has done as live action, and nothing really comes to mind from the last 10 years. Pirates/Tomorrowland were based off of their rides, Tron was a sequel, Persia was based off a video game, 2 Alice movies, John Carter and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe were based off book series, Lone Ranger was a remake...

The only thing that comes to mind is Enchanted. Which was inspired by multiple fairy tales and Disney Princesses' but in an original, cross-world story.

You mean the Disney whose canon is 90% adaptations of classic stories?

You misunderstood me, I'm aware that most of what they do are adaptations. They've done some wholly original stuff like Zootopia just now, but what I meant by what I said was more original/new adaptations instead of making a million adaptations of one thing. THAT'S unoriginal and not creative, the exact opposite of what Disney doesn't stand for anymore.

I don't know, I still feel like you've got a misrepresentation of what Disney's doing and has done. Even those feature length animated classics we know so well often weren't Disney's first go at those stories, he did shorts much earlier in his career with some of those fairy tales, but of course most people only know the ones that are successful.

Disney has an obligation to protect their existing IP, and the more derivative works they do of those IPs, the more control they have over them and protection once the copyright on some of them finally expires, and make no mistake, Disney's been running from that for years. Especially since they haven't done ANYTHING with Snow White beyond the first feature, it's been a long time coming. (Once Upon a Time doesn't really count)

Besides, the only way things survive is if they gain cultural relevance to new generations. Disney will do it so long as they're a company and it's profitable. The live actions adaptations are certainly numerous lately, but Disney was having trouble keeping their live action films afloat until Alice came in and smashed the boxoffices. I think it's a safe and interesting learning tool for Disney to play with their toys in new ways, and often it creates jobs and makes audiences think critically about some stories in ways they didn't before. And if they keep straight to the source material, it's still nice, I wouldn't trade the Cinderella they made last year for 10 new properties.

In any case, things like Zootopia and their newer IPs being launched and acquired are more than making up for homegrown stuff lately. But such things need nesteggs to pull money from and safenets set up in case of failure. Disney can't ride this high forever, like every business it's cyclical and they need to prepare as much as possible for any outcomes.

These movies eventually get created. With so many Live-Action adaptations being announced, Disney needs to clarify for D23 2017.
But back to topic, Disney's original live-action department is in shambles. The Finest Hours just looked so unappealing. Why is Disney excelling in every other feature length film department except for their original live-action department?
