I'm a sucker for a good romance story, I can admit that. I honestly prefer some romance in the games I play, movies I watch, and books I read. I almost never just seek out something solely in the genre of romance though, because honestly that's when it starts to not work so well for me.
I think romance is one aspect of our lives, and while it is a huge one for some people, there really are all of these other complicated facets that come with it. And too often does romance seem portrayed in media unrealistically. Sometimes it seems super forced, or like it's just there, I mean I can't really think of a recent example of a romance that blew me away in anything.
I think sometimes the most annoying aspect of romance for me though is just when it's teased honestly. When you watch that anime or you play that jrpg and there is clearly that couple that keeps being hinted at, it pisses me off when nothing is done about it in the end. I'm not even saying they have to get together in the end, but please address it.
Honestly I guess one of the most well-done romances in media in my opinion might be Clannad. Nagisa wasn't even who I wanted Tomoya to get with, but despite it being obvious that it would be her if he ended up with anyone at all, their relationship was so well-developed that I was still fine with it. These were two very different people who had a hundred other real life problems to worry about, and they learned about each other's issues and faults and complexities and went through the whole phase of friendship before becoming a thing. And even then dramatic kissing and whatnot is never thrown in our faces and we sit with them through school, coming of age, finding work after school, marriage, kids, sickness, death.
