It's revealed in dream drop distance that riku was supposed to be the original wielder right? Im having trouble remembering.

Riku had a proper inheritance ceremony in BBS so he was the original wielder in KH1. Sora had the stronger heart (and Ven's) but technically wasn't given a proper ceremony(maybe Ven will give him one in KH3?).

I just wanted to know in what part of dream drop distance it was revealed

We've known it since KH1. Riku says that Sora was just the delivery boy, and that the Keyblade belongs to him, and then he summons the KK out of Sora's hands. Sora gets it back later, but I think it was pretty clear Riku hadn't been wrong about the Keyblade being supposed to be his. Sora only got it back because he proved his heart was stronger and Kingdom Key decided Sora was the better wielder. But it was always supposed to be Riku's.

If there was any doubt, BBS further confirms it when Riku gets a bequeathing from Terra but Aqua decides not to give Sora one.

Nomura confirmed it further in the KH1 Scenario Mysteries so yes, Riku has been the canon chosen one since the very beginning.

Yes, Kingdom Key originally belonged to Riku.

In order to get a Keyblade, you need to be Bequeathed (have the Keyblade inheritance ceremony performed on you). Being Bequeathed causes a Keyblade to choose you. The person Bequeathing someone needs to be a Keyblade Master or someone on the level of a Keyblade Master, and the person being Bequeathed needs to have a strong heart. All you need to wield a Keyblade is a strong heart. In order to obtain a Keyblade though, you need to be Bequeathed. Terra Bequeathed Riku in Birth by Sleep. So, as stated above, that caused a Keyblade to choose Riku. That Keyblade was Kingdom Key. In KH1, during the storm on Destiny Islands, Sora unknowingly touched Riku's heart. During that moment, Kingdom Key saw Sora's heart as stronger than Riku's since Riku was falling to darkness and chose Sora instead and jumped over to him. Sora is able to wield it because he has a strong heart. So, Sora receiving a Keyblade is a rare and unique case since he wasn't Bequeathed. He happened to be at the right place at the right time and happened to have a strong enough heart. Later, at Hollow Bastion, Riku took back Kingdom Key because it was still technically his/he showed that his heart was stronger than Sora's during that moment. But, after Sora gave his iconic speech, Kingdom Key chose Sora again since Sora proved his heart was stronger than Riku's, and this time, it was permanent.

This might not be the correct place to post this, but I saw this as the most relevant. Is it true that the only reason Sora can use a keyblade is because Ventus resides in his heart and therefore Sora can draw forth a keyblade? And if so, once Ven awakens and his heart makes his way back to his body, will Sora lose the ability to use the keyblade? I brought this up in another thread and someone was very adamant about Sora being a weirder regardless of Ven. He stated that Nomura confirmed this but was not able to cite a source...

no. sora being able to wield the keyblade is not related to ven.

sora uses the keyblade just fine in the end of KH1/CoM even though Ven's heart is now with Roxas and not him, so it really shouldn't affect him aside from not being able to dual wield anymore.

He stated that Nomura confirmed this but was not able to cite a source...
-- So it's not "Once Sora's story is finished, another hero's story will begin", the hero is always Sora.
Nomura: Yes. One of the concepts behind the KH series is that the main character Sora isn't special, he's just a normal boy. Yes he does have connections with Ventus' heart, among others, but he hasn't inherited anything from them. He's just a normal boy you could find anywhere. I wanted to make Sora a character that the player could take onto themselves and feel that you don't have to be special. But connect to many people and you will realize your secret potential.

Thanks for that! So as of now we are not able to confirm exactly how Sora is using the keyblade since he did not “inheriit” the ability to use the keyblade from Ventus. Maybe the keyblade chose him based on the strength of his heart without requiring a bequeathing from any master. Unless I’m missing something where Nomura explains this/ story plot...

That's pretty much the reason, the Keyblade just stuck around him. The lessons Sora learns in the Disney worlds made his heart stronger, and as Ansem acknowledges that's what makes the Keyblade sway.
Ven's heart only comes in place when he has to use a second Keyblade during Forms.

literally, it was through the power of gay love. he reached out and touched riku's heart and through that the keyblade transferred to him. when sora later proved himself the keyblade chose him as its rightful master.
