The "Switch 1 direct before Switch 2 direct" has reared it's ugly head again. This time for this week. Eh, we'll see.

In any event, just over a week away from the big show. I'll go ahead and throw in some wild predictions:

1. Mario Kart 9 at launch. Will get DLC for the entire life of the system (MKX8D's booster pass being a test run).

2. Metroid Prime 4 as a crossgen title. Only 1 SKU but drastically different performance between S1 & S2.

3. Kid Icarus Uprising remaster at launch. This will be 1 of the 2 big show pieces for the mouse functionality.

4. KIU however is not Sakurai's next big game, he's just supervising that one. His actual next game is a new KI sequel, releasing next year.

5. On that note, SSBU gets a complete edition with all DLC included+new netcode. Maybe a few more mii costumes or echo fighters to sweeten the pot. This will be holding over the Smash quota until after KI4.

6. The secret online test from last year will be formally revealed as Nintendo's big new IP at launch game (as they always have 1 of those) and will be the other major 1st party mouse title.

7. 3D Mario revealed as the big holiday game.

8. Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity Definitive Edition for late summer/early fall. Much improved framerate and new TOTK content.

9. DS coming to NSO. No GCN because Nintendo wants those for remasters.

Third party stuff

10. Microsoft goes big: Halo MCC, Doom Dark Ages, Age of Empires, and Rare Replay all at launch or in 1st year. More titles to follow over the years.

11. Offline KH series a foot note in the sizzle reel.

12. Other Square titles include Visions of Mana, FF7R (alongside XBox announcement), 14 & 15. DQ12 waits until it's own event.

12. From Capcom: Street Fighter 6, offline RE series, Monster Hunter World, Megaman Legends collection (crossgen).

13. Other 3rd parties: Tekken 8, Elden Ring, BG3, Star Wars Jedi series, Persona 3, & Metaphor.

Console features

15. Mouse functionality confirmed. Nintendo will sell a "pro mouse" but 3rd party mice will also work.

16. Capture button records longer videos.

17. C button used for chat functions.

18. Some form of achievement like system but will be very different from the norm.

This got longer than expected. But most of these I do feel pretty confident on happening eventually.
honestly if any one of those things happen, ill be quite happy.

my biggest concern is how nintendo will sell the discrepancy between ns1 and ns2 to consumers. features and gimmicks alone wont justify the upgrade, its gotta have some particularly impressive specs for a handheld.

with the hands-on event occurring around the globe, it's clear nintendo are comfortable with convincing people to upgrade after a little demo with the successor console. it shows confidence in the device's capabilities.

only 8 days left now.

I just made a bingo card for the Direct (right here) for when I watch it. Guess I’ll throw in some predictions as well:
  1. A demonstration of mouse controls, complete with a new game built around it
  2. General information about the console itself (specs, UI, etc.)
  3. More information on the upcoming Mario Kart game
  4. Backwards compatibility demonstration
  5. New Animal Crossing game
  6. Sakurai’s next project gets teased
  7. “The next Super Smash Bros. game is now in development!”
    • I made 6 and 7 separate predictions just in case Sakurai’s next project isn’t Smash
  8. “These games are now possible on Switch 2”
  9. New Nintendo IP revealed
  10. NSO
  11. 3rd party sizzle reel
  12. Price point revealed
  13. May / June release window
  14. New 3D Mario
I tried to be at least semi-reasonable with my predictions by making them as broad as possible.

Games. Nintendo hasn't sold consoles on specs for generations now, and the fanbase is not one who really cares all that much about that. For casual consumers, all that matters is that this one has Mario Kart 9 with slightly prettier graphics than the previous one, and for hardcore Nintendo fans, they'll buy it no matter what.

While the hardware itself may have been the 2nd worst leak Nintendo's ever had, we still know next to nothing about the software side. Mario Kart is coming, that's about it. Nintendo can totally blow everyone away on April 2nd.

I agree, though I'm doubtful anything else of note will be announced or showcased and hope to be proven wrong. Realistically, they're only going to need one hard hitter at launch to move units after all.

The Jan. 2017 presentation had games covering the whole year (plus SMT5 which took a while). There's clearly gonna be more than the one game.

As said above, they do need to make a hard sell on why current Switch owners should upgrade.

the nintendo switch 2 is poised for massive success—there’s little doubt about that. nintendo would have to make catastrophic missteps for it to flop. but exclusives alone won’t be enough to justify its existence. the hardware must evolve significantly at this point.

yes, nintendo hasn’t focused on raw specs since the gamecube era, but every console since has introduced substantial innovations or a significant boost in power:

  • game boy advance: the first nintendo handheld to feature 16-bit graphics, a massive leap from the original 8-bit game boy.
  • nintendo ds: their best-selling console to date, offering two screens (one being touchscreen) and built-in wi-fi for the first time.
  • wii: revolutionized gaming with motion controls and brought casual gamers into the fold. it became a household staple worldwide.
  • nintendo 3ds: introduced glasses-free 3D (that people hardly used), significantly more powerful hardware than its predecessor, and improved online functionality.
  • wii u: the first nintendo console to support full HD, featuring an "innovative" gamepad with a second screen. unfortunately, it failed due to poor marketing, as people mistook it as an accessory for the wii, rather than a successor console.
  • nintendo switch: rectified the wii u’s shortcomings, delivering a hybrid console that seamlessly transitions between handheld and docked play. the joy-con controllers added versatile gameplay options, and its stronger hardware (compared to the wii u) brought nintendo back into competition with industry giants.

and now, the nintendo switch 2 looms on the horizon. at first glance, it seems like just another switch, which is why nintendo has explicitly branded it as a true successor with a prominent "2." they want to avoid the branding mistakes that doomed the wii u.

however, a successor must earn its place. it can’t just rely on exclusives—it needs to offer a compelling reason for existing beyond “more switch games.” its hardware must be a leap forward, ensuring that players aren’t stuck with outdated technology for another 7-8 years. considering the original switch launched in 2017 and was already underpowered compared to its competition, an upgrade is long overdue.

there’s been speculation about DLSS or AI upscaling, which suggests nintendo is finally prioritizing graphical fidelity and performance to a degree. that one patent described the rendering games at 520p and upscaling them to 1080p, reducing GPU workload while maintaining visual quality. this is a game-changer for nintendo, allowing for improved performance without excessive hardware strain or extreme framerate drops.

additionally, the fact that they’re willing to let people test out the switch 2 for a hands-on event before release strongly implies it has more to offer than just a standard hardware refresh. there's something more they wanna show off. perhaps new input methods, possibly an evolution of motion controls, improved joy-cons, new ways to interact with games or maybe they wanna show off just how big of a jump the switch 2 is compared to the original switch performance-wise?

tldr: the switch 2 must be a substantial upgrade in every aspect to justify its purchase. as a true successor, it needs to go beyond iterative improvements and deliver meaningful advancements in performance, graphics, and gameplay innovation. no one is expecting 4K graphics or cutting edge visuals, but it's time for nintendo to give this successor console some more wiggle room so developers can develop some amazing titles without the need for excessive optimization.

just a week left.

I think the mouse controls will do a pretty good job at differentiating the Switch 2 from its predecessor. There’s honestly so much you could do with such a concept that just thinking about it makes me salivate.

Nintendo are agents of Chaos, they had indie & partner showcases on the same day last year. There's no understanding their behavior. Past that, there is a matter of unfinished business with Switch 1 & people only wanna hear S2 in the S2 direct.

"It's as easy as a physical game!" *proceeds to spend 2 & a half minutes explaining it & it's still confusing*
