i'm writing this as a review of my experience playing this game based on the PSP version released on the North American PSN. I have tried to locate another page with the same title or feature about said game and have yet to find one. And so I will discuss this game in my review with minimal spoilers to the main plot of the story.

When I first heard about Corpse Party I was cruising the PSN for anything new or interesting. Interesting enough I saw Corpse Party under the RPG genre and decided to look up what the game was about. Corpse Party is a horror video game that also dabbles in a few other genres. However the game is all about telling a tragic story through these 16 bit sprite characters as they literally fall into a living hell from where there may be no return.

Corpse Party tells the story of eight students and one teacher who are giving their farewells to one of their own Mayu Suzumoto who is moving away to another city. They decide to tell ghost stories and share a few laughs before the inevitable good-bye. However the party comes to an end as they perform the "Sachiko Ritual" said to bond them as friends for eternity. After the ritual is performed the worst happens as the school is hit by an earth opening quake that swallows all of them into the dark abyss. From then on you control a select character along with their partner as they traverse what appears to be an elementary school in another dimension. The school seems to be alive while the undead will do everything in their power to stop you and help you meet a very gruesome death.

The game's story is told in five main chapters while ten extra chapters lie hidden to be unlocked by certain conditions and achievements. Each chapter provides sufficient story telling as well as some challenging puzzles or situations, the end result however is that you will be doing allot of trial and error unless your lucky enough to guess what you need to do. The game play is mainly travel from one location to another, find certain items, perform needed tasks, and trying to avoid the undead from causing your tragic end. As you progress from chapter to chapter the challenges will increase and the length of the chapter will as well. However one thing that will annoy and aggravate certain people is the phrase "WRONG END". This is a definite thing that will occur should you choose the wrong path, wrong sequence of events or just looking into the eyes of a dead kid. Which is why you are cautioned to save often and sometimes multiple saves as well.

Two of the strongest points in the game are story telling and atmosphere in Corpse Party. The story not only revolves around your main characters but even the dead who are long gone and haunting the halls of the school. In allot of points in the plot I actually wanted to put down the PSP and take in what was happening. I did during a very revealing point in the story and almost wanted to cry. If your someone who loves a good story then you will be entranced by Corpse Party the first time around, however since Corpse Party is built around replaying failed attempts to end a chapter and so much mystery to the plot, playing it a second time around might only be for those who wish to get all the extra chapters and find all the name tags left behind by the dead students, which will lead some to question the $20 price tag.

However in this case to make certain your purchase Corpse Party's atmosphere is almost the reason to get it entirely. The game comes with the original Japanese voice actors with english subtitles. Along with some of the greatest sound effects and surprises to make your fingers twitch as you try and hold onto the psp while playing. A word of advice is to play this game WITH your head phones on, the game is mainly built to be listened directly in your ear. The game designers made sure that each headphone would get certain voices, sound effects and creepy children's laughter. For example one of the bad endings I got involved my character forced fed a pair of sewing scissors. For minutes I heard as they scrapped the inside of my characters mouth and slice through their throat. I still cringe thinking how realistic it sounded. In allot of these cases you won't see some of theses gruesome and bloody deaths, but just hearing and imagining these situation will make your spine shiver especially when treated to a blood curdling scream.

The game is a PSP download and will cost you $20 and just over 500 MB of memory. Is it worth it? If you love great story, character development and getting gross and scared this could be a game for you, so go to the PSN, download this game, turn off the lights, turn up the sound in your head phones and prepare for what you won't expect at this party.

as a bonus, here is a link to the announcement trailer for the game, enjoy
