So, this is something I've talked to a couple of buddies about before, and it always kind of ends with us shrugging and not coming to any kind of conclusion.

So, what's with the Mark of Mastery? Why did Aqua and Terra just have a little spar and fight some orbs of light, yet Sora and Riku have to go through loads of sleeping worlds and do infinitely more amount of work to complete the Mark of Mastery?

One theory my friend came up with was that it's different for everyone, but we don't buy that one any more after just talking about it for a minute. Then we determined that maybe different masters have different Marks of Mastery, in which case Yen Sid seems to put Eraques to shame HARD.

Is there some explanation for this my friends and I have just missed, or what?

Sora and Riku's exams, by Yen Sid's own admission in KH3D, are not how the exams typically go. Yen Sid was basically attempting to kill three birds with one stone, due to the overwhelming pressure of the looming return of Master Xehanort. Aqua and Terra had years of training under a Master which influenced their more simple exam. Sora and Riku, by virtue of being self-taught Keyblade wielders, did not, so Yen Sid devised their exam differently.

Their exam is basically trying to accomplish three things:
1 - Serve as a crash course on the proper training by stripping them away of what they had learned so far and doing it over again.
2 - For them to gain the powers necessary to awake those from slumber by opening the Sleeping Keyholes
3 - By showing they are worthy of the Mark of Mastery.

So theirs is basically different because it's trying to do a lot of stuff all in one go, from proper training ideals, to gaining necessary power for the clash with Xehanort, and to show the Mark itself.

By all accounts, Aqua's and Terra's years of training under a Master, followed by the ceremony exam is the original correct way, but even at this point in the world, the ceremony was largely considered unnecessary (it is only at Xehanort's request that Terra and Aqua undergo the traditional exam, presumably Eraqus would have just deemed them to have shown the Mark on his own).

It's basically all "tradition" and "legacy" crap, not really something that's like... a universal hard rule.

Aqua and Terra trained their whole life for their Mark of Mastery. Sora and Riku didn't. Sora and Riku's Mark of Mastery was also their training. Their Mark of Mastery was so much more difficult than Aqua and Terra's because they had to make up for the years of training they missed.

The Mark of Mastery and becoming a Keyblade Master isn't about whether you can save the world or not. It's about being traditionally trained. For example, becoming a black belt in Karate has nothing to do with whether you can save the world or win a fight or not. It has to do with if you have mastered the traditional skills you have been taught. The title of "Keyblade Master" is nothing more than a formality.

Also, saving the Sleeping Worlds is something they would've had to do anyway. Yen Sid was just hitting two birds with one stone by making that task their Mark of Master exam.

Elfdemon, we don't typically approve of people bumping threads that are over six months old. Cut it out.
