Chapter 23 – What Time Brings
For the next few months, I received no word from either Sora or Riku. I tried so hard not to worry about them, but I just couldn’t stop thinking the worst. I knew that they were somewhere out there, fighting for me. If anything bad happened to them, I would probably blame myself for the rest of my life.
Although the months seemed to fly by quickly, the days were dreadfully long. For the most part, I spent the mornings and afternoons with Queen Minnie. I asked her to teach me all the things a mother should know since I never had one before. Of course she agreed and happily taught me everything from preparing a home cooked meal to changing a baby’s diaper.
But during the evening…I spent my time in the baby room with the mysterious letter always in my reach. Since I first read the note, I couldn’t go a day without reading it again. And each time I scrolled my eyes over the words, chills would set in and tingle through my body unbearably. Although it made me sick to my stomach, I had to reread it. I had to make sure this was actually real.
I kept imagining that one day I would walk into the baby room and the letter would be gone. I would sit on the rocking chair and smile lovingly, without a worry on my mind. But ever since I came to this castle, I felt as if I forgot how to smile. Smiling seemed so horribly wrong at this point. How could I be happy when I knew that Sora and Riku could be…gone?
Instead, I spent these past couple of months trying to focus on my child. I was in the beginning of my ninth month now and horrendously large. I was also physically incapable of bending down or leaning over. Sometimes, I couldn’t believe how big I had gotten.
And it always seemed like my baby was kicking around inside me, almost as if she was running a marathon. I felt excited to know that my child would at least be active, but it also kept reminding me of the reality of things. Although I knew I was pregnant, I still wasn’t sure if I was ready. The future was just too scary to think about.
I usually kept these feelings to myself because I didn’t want to scare anyone. But sometimes, when these feelings overwhelmed me, I would stay up during the night and cry myself to sleep. This didn’t happen too often, but unfortunately, tonight was one of those nights.
I was sitting on the rocking chair in the baby room, my hands trembling as tears dropped down my face. My eyes were fixed before me, my glare targeted on the letter that was now wrinkled from time. The words that were written on this crumpled piece of paper kept running in and out of my mind. I read it so many times that I could practically recite the contents in my head.
After several hours of staring and crying and doing nothing, I decided it was time to read the letter once again. With the little energy I had, I pushed myself forward and gently slid the note off of the nightstand it sat upon. Unfolding the worn out edges, I squinted my weak eyes to bring the blurry words into focus.
Dear Kairi,
First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your pregnancy. It is very good news, for both you and I. You see, I’ve known you for a very long time. And whether you realize it or not, you know me too. For now, I will not tell you who I am. That will be revealed at another time. All you need to know is that I care about you and I am going to help you.
I know the situation you are in and it saddens me that you may fall victim to your own baby. But you do not need to worry any longer because I have figured out a way to save you. But in exchange for my help, you must do something for me.
When the time has come for you to give birth, I will make sure both you and your baby survive. If the procedure succeeds, you must promise to stay with me. I know this may confuse you and I realize that you probably don’t understand what’s truly going on. But remember that this must happen in order for your child to survive. All will be revealed in due time.
You don’t need Sora or Riku to save you anymore, Kairi. I am here for you. I always have been and always will be.
With love,
‘A’
‘And whether you realize it or not, you know me too.’
This line seemed to make the most impact on me. Who was this person? And how did he know me? Since I first read the letter, I couldn’t stop thinking this over. None of it made any sense at all. The only thing I knew was that someone was coming for me. And it was going to be soon.
But how could I be sure to trust this guy? What if he’s some deranged psychopath who only wants to hurt me? Plus, I didn’t like the arrangement he proposed one bit. I didn’t want to ‘stay with him’, even though he promised to help me. It just seemed too weird to be real.
I neatly folded the letter back into a square and tossed it onto the nightstand next to me. Taking a deep breath, I wiped away the tears that had dried to my cheek and snapped myself back into this twisted reality.
That’s when I realized that something was wrong…
The closet door was slightly ajar and a deathly cold air lingered around me. I slowly stood up from my chair and put both hands atop my huge belly, hoping to protect my baby from whatever it was that gave me this tense feeling. I wanted to be sure that no one else was with me, so I took small steps towards the closet, my heart racing a million miles a second. When I got close enough, my fingers curled over the knob and, with a twist, I thrust open the door, jumping back quickly.
But there was nothing inside. Nothing except for the same swinging hangers that were there all along. I felt a little dumb for even worrying so much and silently scolded myself in my head. With a small laugh, I let out a huge breath of relief. “Relax, Kairi,” I whispered to myself. “You’re starting to lose it.”
As I began to turn around, I noticed something dark from the corner of my eye, instantly making my heart race again. Sharply swinging around, I gasped as I saw a person standing next to the baby crib, his entire body covered in a pitch black cloak. “I suppose you’ve forgotten how I love to play tricks on you,” he announced, taking a small step towards me.
I immediately stepped back, my mind running over countless ways which I could escape. “Who are you?! And what do you want?!” I shouted angrily, hoping that this person wouldn’t hurt me.
“It’s okay, Kairi,” the mysterious man quickly replied, his voice calm and quiet. “Don’t get too excited. You don’t want to hurt yourself, do you?”
I was about to come back at him with a rude remark, but something suddenly dawned on me. The way this man stood before me gave me the feeling like he really didn’t want to hurt me. If he was some crazy psycho, he would have already attacked me. So the fact that he was speaking quietly and worrying about my well being gave me the impression that he was ‘him’ – the man from the letter.
I remained quiet for a few seconds, my mind skipping constantly from one thought to another as I tried to sort this all out. “You…” I uttered softly. “You’re the one who gave me the letter, right?”
But the cloaked man just stood motionless and stared at me. His glare was so intense that I could almost feel his piercing eyes burning right through his coat and into my skin. Suddenly throwing up his arms, he finally removed the black hood which covered his face and let it drop onto his shoulders.
The minute his face was revealed, I couldn't take my eyes off of him. I just stared deeply at this man, who wasn’t really a man at all. He was just a kid, no older than I was. His sharp features seemed all too familiar to me, yet so unclear. I carefully examined his pitch black hair, bright blue eyes, and playful smirk, which was almost welcoming.
Lifting his arm slowly, he extended his hand out towards me and shifted his smirk into a warming smile. “It is time, Kairi. Have you made your decision yet?”
