Letter/Number Boxes?

Okay, first off sorry if this has already been posted.

I'm tired of trying to find out what they mean, but I keep seeing these almost everywhere.
I'm not sure if it's because of the kind of computer I have, or maybe my web browser?
But when I ask people they tell me that there letters, and don't know why they're little boxes to me.

Sorry for such a noob-ish question. :/

Those appear to replace characters you don't have, like from East Asian languages. You can download a free language file from Microsoft to get them. If you're using XP, make sure that you have the second service pack, and there should be an option from language options (control panel) to install the file.

There might be a few steps, search "install east asian languages" on google.

I think that's to much work for me, haha. But thanks so much for answering my question.
I completely understand now, and now I know what I need if I want to view them.
