I thought it did too. I also think it's ludicrous to call it character assassination. Xehanort knew she was down there. He knows where Ven is. It makes sense that something happened to her down there. I feel like everyone is jumping to conclusions without... waaait for it.... PLAYING THE DAMN GAME.
Xehanort knew she was down there, but unlike Mickey, who had an established method of finding her from 0.2, Xehanort wouldn't have had a clue where she was within the RoD, nor should he have been able to find her so easily (Ansem SoD was only recently brought back into the present day after all). It's not like these complaints are coming out of nowhere. It simply just doesn't have the proper set up or foundation for it to make sense without making a whole lot of thin assumptions, imo at the very least.
