Japanese writing is actually very easy and quick to learn. And even without it, you really only need it in KH2. There are already plenty of game transcripts to fill in the text only cutscenes, as well as some translations for new scenes. Since there's english voice acting, that's the most you'll need it for KH1.

I guarantee by the end, you'll at least identify the potions and ethers in the menu.

and Swap Magic is infinitely easier than modding a PS2. the most you have to do is replace the skin cover on the system.

At the most, I'll probably end up printing copies of the menu screen for reference. So tacky xD

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

i found myself a translation guide someone made up for KHFM and KHIIFM+ (including the japanese version of RE:COM) that literally tells you EVERYTHING you would need to know and tons of extra stuff you'll probably never look up anyways (gummi ship parts :p) but with those guides, understanding everything is just as easy as if i was playing the english versions. the hardest part is just taking the time to match up the japanese text which i can live with.

Do you have a link to this guide or is it not available online?

oh, that's great! I'd printed off the first one before and lost my copy! this'll work well for me when I'm doing my LPs(though I went with the English RE:COM).

I just need a stapler now.

This may be an incredibly newbish question, but what -are- the Final Mixes?

The Final Mixes are basically a "Director's Cut" for the KH games. So far, only the main series games have Final Mixes (KH FM, KHII FM, and KHBBS FM). They improve the game by adding things that were missing from the original such as Keyblades, abilities, bosses, cutscenes, etc. KHII FM is probably the most drastic change (for the better) and makes KHII US look like a demo.

I know they're sort of "extensions" to the original game, but since they were originally released in Japan, how does one even get the Final Mix games? It's been nagging at me like CRAZY for years, but I never actually found out.

Buy Kingdom Hearts Final Mix (Ultimate Hits) (PS2™) - Play-Asia.com
Buy Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ (Ultimate Hits) (PS2™) - Play-Asia.com
Buy Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Final Mix (Sony PSP™) - Play-Asia.com

These are the games. To play them on a US Playstation 2, you need an item called Swap Magic.

If you have a Phat, get this one.

Buy PS2 Swap Magic Import Game Enabler v 3.8: 2 Disc Set with Slide Tool - 26.85

If you have a Slim, get this one.

Buy PS2 Slim Swap Magic Import Game Enabler v3.8: 2 Disc Set with Flip-Top Cover - 33.85

I own KH FM and KHII FM. They were very, very worth it. Especially the latter, which makes the original look like a demo.

Really? Cuz I found it very easy. dont even have to change the buttons. modding always takes effort.

Now, how exactly does the slide tool work?

Basically, you just slip cover off of the disc holder (it should come off really easily and doesn't affect well, anything. You can even put it right back on as well) Then you just slip the slide tool into the slot thing, move it to the right, pull it out and voila!

Well, after installing the fliptop cover-which simply involves picking out a few pads, removing the screws underneath and just lift and replace-you simply open it. After that, just swap the discs, press down on the disc to make sure it's firmly in place, and close.
