You fought Xenahort's Heartless; meaning that you broke the hope of Xemnas becoming a true being. Also, Xenahort's Heartless was not a special type of Heartless. His body was so strong it kept its form in tract.

And NO...KH wasn't a waste of time...It was a great game...Great story...
Great characters, and introduced us to most of the important characters...

Now when PS3 comes out with it's blue-ray disc function, then they should make all the Kingdom Hearts games
(Including COM, but a remake) Into one giant game on one Blue-ray disc...Now that would be awesome wouldn't it?......

No way. It wasn't a waste of time. If Sora's heartless didn't stop Xehanort's heartless, Xehanort's heartless would've became far more powerful and more evil than Xemnas. Xehanort's heartless was trying to consume all worlds into darkness. That dude really did need to be stopped.

Storyline-wise, KH1 was not pointless. I'll do this without using KH2 spoilers or childish name-calling and bickering.

Ansem was trying to open the door to Kingdom Hearts, thereby unleashing all the Heartless on ALL worlds, presumably at once. This would undoubtably lead to mass genocide on a universal scale. It's easy to see that since: a) everyone on every world would turn into a Heartless; b) he controls the Heartless as his minions; and c) he's really not nice and loves doing evil things; this would have been very beneficial to him, which is why he's doing it in the first place. Regardless of WHY he's doing it, the fact that he's going for that all out genocide is a pretty bad thing in the first place. KH1 is the story of how Sora, Donald, and Goofy stopped him, thereby saving the world from extinction. See? Pretty important to the general storyline.

Play nice, kiddies.
