Here’s the first look. He’s more a parody of Cloud/Squall in my opinion. And definitely not 16-bit. Lmao

Funny how Disney literally owns a JRPG series and yet the people makin' this still go for the same fruit a buncha cartoons went for and it's "overdesigned Cloud knockoff making fun of how dumb and "why?" JRPG designs are"

isn't this character the kind of thing that'd be better as a surprise within the movie than a named character with his own press release with renders?? because he's kind of funny?? what happened to shame, did it just disappear?

But.... he's a Disney character. KH 3 onwards has shown that Disney characters (especially pixar characters) can't be bosses.
Who knows maybe by then things will have changed again. Plus there is something ironic playing a Square game and beating up a parody/homage character of a Square character.

Fairly certain KH3 was an anomaly due to certain factors.

Disney was hypersensitive at the time. Besides their brand synergy stuff, they were very clearly testing KH on some level to see if it could be positioned as a major brand for Disney to properly utilize. Up until KH3 they were just letting Nomura do whatever he wanted and didn't take gaming that seriously, and then around the time KH3 was in dev, gaming was becoming a bigger focus for Disney. They had a lot of rules on how things would work with their brands in video games, and it wasn't that long after KH3's release that Disney announced a looser approach to games and that they would be letting licensors do more creative twists on their properties.

Not to mention they had creatives from those films providing direct feedback, which had never happened before, so that certainly played a role.

Disney has become significantly more lax and open to the idea of showing their characters being aggressive toward each other ala stuff like Mirrorverse and whatnot. I'm almost certain that Disney Universe game with Epic Games will also allow such interactions as well.

In the end, it is just a pendulum. KH3 was extremely restrictive. KH4 may or may not have more lax restrictions this go around, but we can't predict it based on what happened with KH3 given how different things were with it.

Can’t wait to see Sora become best buds with Lance Slashblade in KH4.

I’m still on the fence about whether we’ll get animated worlds, but an Inside Out reveal a week before the sequel releases next month would not be a bad idea at all. (And a good way to bait and switch us from Star Wars to be revealed later on).

One game doesn’t really make a rule. Marshmallow, The Titans, Davy Jones, and Baymax are all Disney characters. Toy Box didn’t have any villains that would have worked in the time period it was set in. And I honestly don’t think a Randall fight would have been that much more interesting than what we got.

i don’t think the issue was really that they didn’t want Disney characters in general to fight either (with some specific exceptions like Elsa.) Otherwise, we wouldn’t have Disney party members either or Mickey being beaten to a pulp. Rather, the issue is with how KH3 approached the stories of the worlds. They all pretty much are either a mostly faithful adaption of the films or are written to still fit with the canon of the films.

For the former, this leaves little room for creativity for characters like Gothel to fight the party herself. With that example, she has to die a very specific way to stay true to the film. They could have included the Stabbingtons, but I think they were just left out to sub in Marluxia in their place.

For the latter, we have one world where none of the villains are active based on when the story is set (Toy Box), one where the villain isn’t really a direct fighter (Monstropolis), and one where we do actually fight a Disney “villain” (San Fransokyo). So I think in these situations, it just depends on the story and whether there are characters that would make sense as physical opponents in a fight against 4-5 party members.

So all this to say, I don’t think Disney would block this character from being a secret boss or a boss fight in general. If we ever have an Inside Out world, it would just depend on when/where the story is set and whether fighting him makes sense with the film’s canon.

I've been revisiting Disney Infinity lately, so figured I'd make a video of different characters with the keyblade:
