they scalped Sora
Most likely.REALLY hoping that was an honest mistake, because if not, that really sucks. Something like this happened a while back with that Nickelodeon Tennis game, but thankfully that had a happier ending to it.
Sora was bootlegged
Isn't that the point? Sora got bootlegged which is what the fan art is, I guess.
What does that have to do with using fanart?Isn't that the point? Sora got bootlegged which is what the fan art is, I guess.
Evidently a way to explain it away. Parody is one of the best ways to get away with using a property, such as "A day with Spongebob Squarepants" if anyone is familiar with that story. The artist could just say "well, it's a bootleg factory, THE characters did it, not us".What does that have to do with using fanart?
While I havenât seen it yet, from what I understand, this is supposed to be taken off of Sora during the bootlegging process. Itâs supposed to be his actual hair, taken off a 2D Sora, of which thereâs plenty of official artwork.Isn't that the point? Sora got bootlegged which is what the fan art is, I guess.
How can anyone even confirm this 100%? It just looks like Sora's hair. Which is what the fan artist was trying to replicate. I have no idea how people are just claiming that they stole it from a fan artist when I'm sure if I Google'd Sora, that fan art would be like on page 5 versus all other official artwork that comes up.While I havenât seen it yet, from what I understand, this is supposed to be taken off of Sora during the bootlegging process. Itâs not about it looking like fanart, but the fact that someone in the production team of the film either didnât check to see if it was official art or not as a best case scenario, or willingly stole someoneâs fanart to use in the movie at worst.
I canât speak for the original artist, but if I saw that my art was used in a production without my knowledge and they didnât ask me if they could use it, Iâd be pretty ticked off.
problem is it looks 1:1, I think the shading is similar tooHow can anyone even confirm this 100%? It just looks like Sora's hair. Which is what the fan artist was trying to replicate. Thatâs the point. It comes across as nobody bothered to check. Heck, itâs happened before with other franchises too.How can anyone even confirm this 100%? It just looks like Sora's hair. OK this is a good reference.Thatâs the point. It comes across as nobody bothered to check. Heck, itâs happened before with other franchises too.
The aforementioned Nickelodeon Tennis thing, which again, thankfully had a happy ending to it and was a genuine mistake:
And in a more amusing case, someone just straight up took a YouTube thumbnail for a My Little Pony DVD back cover in the UK a few years ago.
As for confirmation that it was Sora fanart used in that shot:
Timecode is 3:11 for a comparison.
I get that movies like these can be on a tight schedule to make assets and props, but it shouldnât be hard to ring the parent company, in this case either Disney or Square-Enix, and ask âhey, do you have any stock character art of Sora we can use for a quick shot?â instead of relying on Google as a quick-fix solution. Google can be a handy thing, but not for official art reference in an image search.
Nothing ever is simple and clean in this world, contrary to what we all are familiar with.I see your points, and at the end of the day fan art is a muddy grey area when it comes to legality.
As much as I wish it was simple, it never is.
IF the fan art was actually stolen, then I do think someone should acknowledge them.I see your points, and at the end of the day fan art is a muddy grey area when it comes to legality.
