Okay, I haven't done this kind of thing in a while. I participate in Canon RPs, and I write one-shots, but this is the first time in ages that I've had an idea for a multi-chapter fanfic. It started off as just another one-shot, but then, I started reading other fanfics, getting ideas... and now, it's turned into what I hope will be a pretty good story. Here's the prologue, and I hope you guys enjoy it. The story's set a little after Advent Children, but before Dirge of Cerberus. May or may not contain some Dissidia; I don't know on that one yet.
UPDATE: I've decided that yeah, elements from Dissidia are going to be included after all. FF VIII and X are probably going to be the biggest players, with dashes of IX and XIII as I figure out how to make them work logically within the story.
How can you move on from the past when the past won't stay dead? When the memories refuse to stay memories?
Hoping to keep Cloud in character without turning him into a giant angst bucket like people seem to be fond of doing. Let me know pronto if anyone drifts into OOC-ville so I can fix it as soon as possible!
ETA: I'm also including a "soundtrack" of sorts for the story. It's the song that I used the most when writing each chapter, so if you want to use the song to help set the mood, go ahead. Anyway, here's the playlist; it'll get added to as the story gets added to.

Picking Up the Pieces
(Just One Yesterday-Prologue)
“Denzel, you’re not being fair!â€
Cloud looked up from where he’d been bent over Fenrir, mako-blue eyes picking out Marlene as her voice broke the still, winter cold air. Despite her complaint, her eyes were bright with laughter, her small form stooped low as the young girl reached for snow to make a retaliatory snowball. Catching sight of the last remnants of white that clung to her hair, Cloud then turned to see Denzel scampering away to find some sort of cover from the retribution he knew he had coming, the soft sound of laughter trailing after the boy.
Cloud couldn’t help himself; a low chuckle rumbled in his chest as he turned away from the bike to watch the two of them play. His eyes skipped up for a moment, taking in the skyline of Edge just beyond them, and the sight of a small car that was closer to where the children were playing, Tifa leaning against the car’s hood, her eyes on the boy and girl as well. Cloud had been on his way back from a delivery to Kalm when he’d seen the three of them on the outer edges of the city, and the little family had decided to go out just a little bit further to enjoy the snow that had fallen during the night.
The blonde knew he was going to have to use the car for his deliveries over the next several months until spring came. Bending over the bike one last time, he checked the exhaust work again. There was a little bit of scuffing from that wipe-out he’d taken yesterday on his way back, but it wasn’t anything Cloud couldn’t fix up, and the matching scrape he’d gained on his right arm had healed hours after the accident thanks to the mako in his system. Still, it was time to lay the bike up for the winter; he wasn’t in any mood to risk something that couldn’t be fixed, either on the bike or with himself.
He was tough, but not immortal.
“Penny for your thoughts?â€
Tifa’s voice sounded at Cloud’s side, drawing his attention from the bike to the woman that had crossed over to stand by him. She held up her hand, offering him the hot chocolate she held in her gloved fingers. He took the offer, his fingers lingering against hers for a moment, before taking a sip of the drink, enjoying the warmth of the beverage running down his throat. Reaching out, he rearranged Tifa’s scarf so it fit more closely around her shoulders and neck before he said, “Just checking Fenrir over after a spill yesterday. I should have taken the car instead of the bike. You’d think I’d listen to the forecasts by now, huh?â€
Tifa laughed by way of a response, leaning into Cloud’s side as he wrapped his free arm around her shoulders. Raising the cup to drink again, Cloud watched Denzel and Marlene trade shots back and forth across their battlefield. Cloud could understand why Tifa had asked; geostigma and the threat of Reunion had passed over the summer, but the incident with Kadaj and his gang had drawn up a lot of memories, both Cloud’s own and the ones he’d inherited from Zack. Between Denzel getting the stigma and having his own illness to deal with, Cloud had backslid a
lot, falling somewhere in between where he’d been when he thought he was Zack and feeling like he wasn’t strong enough to protect the people he cared about.
And there were still Zack’s memories to deal with, too. Cloud had learned how to assert himself in his own mind, pushing his own personality to the front and the way he’d perceived Zack and SOLDIER to the back. It had taken him a long time to manage it, and there were times he still slipped up, but Cloud had stopped trying to do it on his own. Tifa had helped him to put himself back together after he’d fallen into the Lifestream, and she’d helped him a hundred times over since then, just by getting him to open up about when he was having an episode and listening to him when he talked.
They were never going to go away, Zack’s memories; not completely. But Cloud didn’t want them to, either. Even after having shed the false persona he’d worn, Cloud had come to accept Zack’s memories, the memories that had been imprinted onto him after Hojo’s experiments and the S-cells in him resonating with Zack’s, as a part of who he was, and Cloud was never giving up his identity again.
Were there times Cloud wished he could have one more day with everyone he’d lost? With Zack, Aerith, his mother? Who he’d been before Sephiroth had destroyed Nibelheim? Certainly; sometimes, the need for one more chance struck him so hard it left Cloud breathless, aching for what he’d lost, what could have been, and what would never be. But then again…
“Marlene, Denzel! It’s time to go home!†Groans sounded from the kids, but they still ran for the car. Turning to Tifa, Cloud pressed his forehead against hers for a moment as he said softly, “I’ll meet you guys there, okay?â€
“Sounds good to me,†Tifa said on a smile. Cloud returned the smile, waiting until Tifa had climbed into the car before he swung his leg over Fenrir. Starting the engine, he let the bike purr to life beneath him, his thoughts still playing around in his mind. There were times he wished he could go back to yesterday, sure. But then again…
Who didn’t?
Hoping to keep Cloud in character without turning him into a giant angst bucket like people seem to be fond of doing. Let me know pronto if anyone drifts into OOC-ville so I can fix it as soon as possible!
