The sun rose on a dusty dawn. Lizards scurried from their various hiding spots as a truck drove down the dirt road. Some non-descript cd played at a noticeable volume, which Catherin unconsciously tuned out. She wondered how far this man would take her. He seemed a nice enough fellow, had offered her a ride, which she normally wouldn’t take, but he had no weapons visible, and at least no bodies readily apparent. At this point she felt like she could defend herself from one guy, and if she played tough, the man wouldn’t even touch her. She had her knife clearly readied, but her eyes told that she hadn’t killed a single thing, nor even gotten into a fight before. Hopefully this man wouldn’t pick up her fear, but it didn’t matter. What was done was done, and like she thought before, the man seems friendly enough.
“So where were you headed?” The man asks, looking over and the girl who sighed silently at the whipping wind.
“Town.” She said simply, implying she didn’t honestly know. The man had tried to speak a few times, to strike up some kind of conversation, but Catherin wanted none of it. Sure, she might as well have been using this man, but he’d return the favor to someone else anyway.
“Closest town is the next city, Wisten. That ok?”
She said nothing, the only approval was a shrug. She slid her head down to rest on an arm which rested on an open window. They didn’t speak again until they reached Wisten. He dropped her off at a train station, it seemed as logical as anywhere else. “Be careful, ok?” The man said, still showing interest oddly enough.
“Yeah. Thanks.” She said as she gave a half bow to the man. He drove off. She sighed again and checked the contents of her bag once more. Her belt, which held a medium sized knife and a revolver she picked up off a broken down gunstore, was secure. She started to scout out the town, instinctively looking for a place to eat.
