Something has just happened and it has caused me to think over Sam's words that perhaps I could benefit from a little faith in my life. While I understand that faith and religion are two different things, I find a small sort of happiness in the idea of me believing in God and talking to him, etc.

At the moment I'm sceptical about his existence and basically, I was wondering if it would be weird of me to accept God into my life but not believe that he created the universe or the earth or man.

I don't want to dedicate my whole life to him and swear by his word because I still uphold my 'scientific' beliefs, but I would like a relationship with God wherein I am happy and content but not dependant.

Thoughts?

I've thought about it but I like the idea of speaking to God, confiding in him, best. Kind of like a special relationship, I think?

Well I'm Christan, and from my experience it's an easy religion to follow. Not much is expected of you so you don't have worry about being 'dependent' of it.

Sure, i'm starting to think the same way actually. I've been an agnostic for a while but i've always had hope that someday he would appear or he would talk to me. I want to have faith and believe but I just can't :/

Even though I don't really believe in religions and stuff, I tend to talk to someone when I'm having a hard time, is that person God? I don't know, but there's someone listening, this I kinda know, I get this feeling when I'm talking then that someone's really listening.

Have you tried to keep a diary? It can be very therapeutic. :)

This is so true!

You know, sometimes think when your having trouble that your subconscious is listening to you, kinda strange to say this actually but I think this is kinda true in a weird way.

I feel the same way. Just like you said in your other post, you don't have to be religious to talk to "someone" or "something". It doesn't have to be identified as a deity. It can be fate, luck or even yourself. You can also express your deepest thoughts through art.

Yeess! That's what I kinda hate with religions, in a way they're the same as science, they want to explain the existense of all that lives, they want to explain stuff. I mean, no one's gonna say the right answer to that, people want to explain things that they simply can't and because of that they're going to make up stories.

I believe in something but I can't call it God 'cause the 'God' that people talk about these days just isn't the same

I say go for it Sol c:

The beginning of any good relationship with God is simple conversation.

But I'm a little curious, what God do you want to believe in?

Faith and spirituality is a personal journey. Ultimately we can only convince ourselves if we believe or not.

Just God. Christian God. Catholic God. Any God that is up there and that is true, which a) I don't know if he even exists and b) I don't know which God he happens to be. :/

As for the diary - that's a no-go. I have a diary now and reading over it, it actually depresses me more than it helps me. I don't like thinking about some of the things that have happened and it is better for my mental health to stay away from them.

I do have a creative outlet, yes: writing. I've been at it for about five years now. I just think I need to take the next step.

The Bible says that faith is given by God, and it is not something that you can perfectly make yourself, but is made perfect through God. Everyone, even Christians, struggle with doubt, but the Bible says if we ask for any spiritual need, especially faith, God is faithful to provide that to us.

I don't want to dedicate my whole life to him and swear by his word because I still uphold my 'scientific' beliefs

Why does science have to keep you from God? It's not like Christians are all ignorant morons, if that's what you might have thought. I've made some great Christian friends who are biomedical engineers, majors in biology, international studies, history, chemical engineers, religious studies majors, etc. One of my close friends goes to MIT and he's one of the strongest Christians I know. My parents are both scientists and Christians.

There are some books you can read about scientific evidence for a God, Jesus, etc.

Anthony Flew - There Is A God
Lee Strobel - The Case for Christ
Lee Strobel - The Case for a Creator

There's other sources if you want that I can give to you, just let me know. But those are fantastic books.

but I would like a relationship with God wherein I am happy and content but not dependant.

God of the Bible is out for you, then, because following God is a sacrifice, as it should be for the sacrifice God made for us. Hence the Bible telling us to die to ourselves so that we may live through God.

That's not to say the Christian walk isn't fun or worth it. It's by all means rewarding and wonderful. Otherwise these people wouldn't be praising so highly

I suggest you find a good Bible, like NIV if possible. It's a good translation.

I don't believe you need guidelines or religion to believe in or have a relationship with God. As far as I'm concerned, all religion worships the same God, only in different ways. You don't need to commit yourself to someone else's way of life to do what is fundamentally the same.

Religion isn't wrong, but it isn't always (and doesn't need to be) right for everyone.

I understand this feeling...

I used to fulfil it by just crossing my fingers and 'praying' to whatever might be out there listening. It was very personal, and nothing to do with organised religion or following teachings; I was just sending out my feelings and hopes into the void. If they reached something, then something may have listened. If they didn't, then at least I was putting my own thoughts and feelings into order. I think I used to preface every 'prayer' with something along the lines of, 'If someone is out there, and if you care to listen...' and I'd end every one with 'and thank you for listening, if you listened, and I sincerely apologise if I caused any bother' or something. Just in case :p I also used to make sure to say thank you for every single good thing I could think of in my life before I talked about any worries. That helped me put things in perspective.

It really did work for me, kind of like positive thinking, but over time I stopped needing that feeling of having someone to confide in, so I stopped doing it.

I didn't mean that Christians don't practise science and that they're stupid, I meant that I'd uphold my beliefs that God did not create the universe or anything inside it. Might seem like a stupid question but I was wondering if a person who has a relationship with God can believe in the big bang theory. I'd prefer my relationship with God to be like a relationship with a friend instead of someone who serves him.

Hmm..then who's right in their beliefs? Everyone? Because if you believe in a Heaven, and you believe everyone has their own beliefs to follow, then does that mean everyone goes to Heaven for whatever god they believe in?
Hey Dogen.

Shut the fcuk up.

Stop turning this into a religous argument thread.

We're all limited to our own beliefs, but while we may choose to separate ourselves from one another through those beliefs, we're still united in our faith in God; the rest is subjective. I'm not here to argue whose beliefs are better or more "right."
