Backstory
For the last fourty years, the world has been undergoing a secret change. Strange objects have been falling from the sky: there is no rhyme or reason to them, which combined with their rarity means that it's become impossible to predict where another one will show up.
The objects in question are known as Imagination Drives, or IDs. These machines vary in shape, colour and size, but all of them are quite small: anywhere from the size of a wrist-watch to a handheld gaming machine. They're all durable, and appear to be made from materials not of this world. And when a person makes direct physical contact with the device, that person is changed forever.
The object will 'bond' with the first person that touches it, absorbing itself into their body and resulting in some kind of immediate physical change: anywhere from hair, eye or skin colour to markings of various kinds. From this point onwards, the person may access the ID mentally, altering their appearance even further (usually lending them a mechanical or alien appearance) and granting them immense physical and psionic power, as well as knowledge and memories they lacked before. At will, the person may change back to try and fit in with normal society, but the ID alters the personality while it's in effect: some individuals change, and then don't go back.
And all the while, corporations, governments and organizations of every sort seek to harness these devices as well as everyone connected to them.
Plot
It's now 2012, and the world is about to change again. A powerful and influential IDer is about to reveal his secret to the rest of the world, while a new ID has landed right within the United States government's grasp: an ID that could so thoroughly alter the balance of power that the world could collapse.
All of this, amidst mass hysteria regarding the Mayan calender, oil shortages and mass extinctions... and soon, the arrival of the true IDers. And they want their toys back.
Rules (READ THEM)
1) Usual KHI rules: don't be needlessly or intentionally offensive, use decent grammer (and literacy, and spelling), don't spam or double-post etc.
2) This is meant to be a mature roleplay, but remember this works both ways: that is, while it's intended to become quite dark and gritty at times, please try to avoid graphic violence, sex or language.
3) Don't god-mod or machine gun post, and don't try to be to overpowered with your character.
4) Post fairly regularly: at least once every three days or so. I'm not expecting you to post once a day, but more than once a week would be good.
5) If you've read the rules, add 'Life is short. ______' to the top of the template if it's human, and 'Now you're playing with ______' to the top of your template if it's for an ID.
