I just found out that the original Japanese version of original Kingdom Hearts only has Normal difficulty.

Actually thats not exactly true, during the beginning of the game when you're answering the three questions about what you want out of life, whats important to you etc, that will set the difficulty of the game higher or lower.

Or do you mean they removed that option?

They meant there was only one difficulty instead of 2 (and then Final Mix added a third).

I think that was the case.

The US release added a lot.
Yep. Exactly why FM as we know and love was created for the most part-- because fans in Japan were kind of peeved that they missed out on so much stuff that was added for the base western release. So they decided to release a version with all that content in Japan plus, since they were at it, adding some other stuff as well.

...which ended up creating unrest in the west because now those fans wanted the new stuff...

It's a bit silly, honestly. You'd think they would've figured out to stop doing that sooner than they did.

But I still get a bit frustrated when people claim Square made FM Japan exclusive just to screw over the western fans because I guess those people don't realize that the Japanese base was originally the ones who got cheated out of content. *shrugs*
