If you're talking about the real world, no, they existed during that time. It's just that they were too far/difficult to reach so the Foretellers used the Book of Prophecies to conjure up projections for ease of access.
but werent the projections based on the future versions? were these worlds inhabited in the real world? why were they hard to reach?

The world at that time is basically KH's equivalent of Pangaea. Every world is connected by land but it'd take far too long to get to them.

you cant have kingdom hearts without convenient teleportation ig. i think its the only jrpg ik where the chracters dont travel on foot. like think about it, in every FF, you are basiclly on foot till you get the airship. In KH you either have the airship from the get go or some others means.

1. a medium through which their bodies can be reformed (a belonging of some sort, like Brain's hat or Maleficent's cloak)
2. someone with memories of them
what belonging did ventu, lauriam and elrena have?

In UX-era, the inhabitants of those worlds were just chilling, vibing, and going about life. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Later on when the end of the world occurs, worlds are engulfed in darkness and slowly start being restored, everything and everyone just comes back at a different pace.

The real reason they used projections based on the future is.... cuz marketing.

This takes place in the ancient past. Most of the popular characters weren't even born yet. The casual audience will never buy a KH title that doesn't feature pre-established Disney characters. So, how can this KH game market popular Disney IPs like every other entry in the series? Create fake versions of them based on information from the future.

Then Armageddon happened. The world was broken into smaller worlds via darkness and each smaller world recovered from darkness at its own pace. That became the in-universe reason as to why each world's level of civilization and technology drastically differ from each other.

It maliciously overcomplicated the narrative, but alas it was the only way to get the game green lit.
