Sitting in the library taking notes on this book, I can't check it out because I'm leaving this weekend and it'd be due before I get back XP
My question is: When I start writing my essay, how should I handle/cite a source that cites other sources?
Like, I'm taking notes from this book, and some of the stuff I'm pulling from it has yet more citations.

It's like you're trying to plant a tree but pulling all the limbs off in the process..

Understandably, this is a bit late, but it'll hopefully help other people. Disregard the notion that the book cites other sources - it mainly cites other sources in order to have authenticity on the subject at hand; Just use the book as the source.

Not sure if this is the right place but I figured it would be better than creating an unnecessary thread. So, I'm about to go back to school and I have signed up for the more advanced classes. Advanced Algebra 2/ Trig. and Chemistry. Is there anything I should maybe brush up on to make my life easier?

Brush up on Algebra I & Geometry a little, and review the Periodic Table alot. And be able to follow instructions REALLY WELL in labs. So brush up on your egotistical paranoia, too.

And BOMDAS sounds so much more cooler than PEMDAS. :(

Actually, my sister took ADV Chemistry last year and all they did was go to lab.

She even said she didn't need the Periodic Table at all.

Then again, it just may depend on the teacher you get :p

My mom is signing me and my sis up next Tuesday then we start that next Monday.

I can't wait to see what classes I'm taking....

So entering College chemistry without any high school chemistry, is there anything I need to look at?
Well, if you're not going to be doing a chemistry-related course, it won't matter if you've done it or not. In that case, you probably wouldn't even touch chemistry.

I know this is random and kinda odd, but I just wanted to put it out there that I think we should establish a kind of organization that's not really existent in this thread. What I mean to say is, someone posts their questions and waits for another random person to answer. I'm thinking that we should all list our expertise in academic subjects, so that a person can use it as a reference for a PM or something that'll more easily get someone's attention. It's just a thought, but I thought it might help with the summer coming to an end.

Anyway, on that note, I'm putting it out there that I can help with most levels of math, anything up to Calculus I (that's what I'm about to start in a week.) But, I know a lot it anyway, so I should still be able to help with the earlier material. Also, not so much on the literature side of it, but I was always a good English student as well. I could help if anyone needs advise on writing an essay (expository, persuasive, etc.)

tl;dr I can help with Math (Algebra, geometry, Trig, and early Calc) and English Composition in case anyone needs it.

On that note, I'm gonna be taking my first programming class, and it's a subject of which I know nothing. So, I'm wondering if anyone here will be able to periodically help me out. I don't know what language it'll involve yet (my guess would be Java) but I figured setting it up now will be easier than randomly posting a question here in the future and waiting for some response.

I like that 'offering specialist help' suggestion, so I think I'll contribute some: I don't mind helping out with anything up to College-level Chemistry, Biology and Maths.

I could probably give people some good help with Physics and astronomy topics.

Lol Jezza. :D

I can has also taught peoples how too order their college textbooks from Amazon for cheaper than the college's Book Store. It's like saving money by switching to Geico, All-State, State Farm, and Nationwide. (Gee, they all say you can save an average of _________. o_O)

o-o I have Biology homework, and I might need help..FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I'd really appreciate if someone could help with this physics problem.

A body of uniform acceleration has a velocity of 11.8 cm/s when its x coordinate is 3.86 cm. If its x coordinate .904 s later is -3.32 cm, what is the x coordinate of its acceleration?

I'm assuming that the whole "x coordinate" thing is referring to movement along the x-axis, ie we're dealing with one-dimensional mechanics:

Let's have x be the position the body is currently at (-3.32cm), x0 be the starting position, v be the velocity (11.8cm/s) and t be time taken (0.904 seconds).

Because we have constant acceleration, we can use the formula:
x - x0 = (v)(t) + (1/2)(a)(t^2)

Edit: My fractions don't look right, but it's numerator on the first line, the fraction bar as hyphens, then the denominator on the third.

Rearranging for acceleration gives:
(2)(x) - (2)(x0) - (2)(v)(t)
----------------------------- = a
(t^2)

Subbing in, we have:
(2)(-3.32) - (2)(3.86) - (2)(11.8)(0.904)
-------------------------------------------- = a
(0.904)^2

And solving gives:
a = -43.7 m/s^2

Alright, I've a question for our geniuses

I have a regular polygon (square) and they give me the expressions for two side lengths
the length is x^2 + 2 and the width is x^2 + x, find x

What do I do?

If it's a square (or any regular polygon), then all the sides are the same length. This let's you set the two expressions equal to each other:
x^2 + 2 = x^2 + x
subtract x^2 from both sides:
2 = x
check your work, if necessary:
(2)^2 + 2 = (2)^2 + (2)
8 = 8 ✓

Killing is easy once you forget the taste of sugar
Okay so I have the same 0.1 M solutions of NaCl, CaCl2, CH3 COOH, HCl, CH3 OH, Distilled H20, and Tap H20. I need to find out whether they're strong electrolytes, weak electrolytes, or non-electrolytes. I don't know how to definitely find out one way or another. We measured their microsiemens...but I need to know the "equation for the dissociation" for these things?

NaCl - 12182
CaCl2 - 18801
CH3 COOH - 573
HCl - 28160
CH3 OH - 25
Distilled H20 - 22
Tap H20 - 1311

The values are microsiemens.
But seriously wtf how do I figure out which ones are electrolytes and not? I know water is one....I think...and HCl definitely is...but wtf :( they didn't tell us how to do this.

NaCl(s) -> Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq) | STRONG
CaCl2(s) -> Ca2+(aq) + 2CL-(aq) | STRONG
CH3COOH(?) -> CH3COO-(aq) + H+(aq) | WEAK (use the equilibrium sign for this.)
HCl(g) -> H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) | STRONG
CH3OH | NOT AN ELECTROLYTE
Distilled water | NOT AN ELECTROLYTE
Tap water | WEAK ELECTROLYTIC PROPERTIES (because of the dissolved mineral ions.)

Hope that is what you need and that it helps.
