So, Ive always been a big fan of disney but it wasn't until recently that I got sucked into kingdom hearts. However, some things i find a bit disturbing about kingdom hearts especially considering its a Disney thing. most of what I find disturbing has to do with the heartless So I understand what a heartless is. a manifested heart full of darkness but am I the only one disturbed that some of our favourite disney characters are turned into brainless mindless demons basically destined to eternal d**nation? It is implied that this happened to a few disney characters including all from lion king except simba, all in bambi except bambi himself. I understand what a summon gem is; a strong heart (simba bambi) that didnt get turned into heartless but one could argue that many characters should of been spared instead of becoming soulless demons. You could argue that nala had just a big of a heart as simba but is is implied she became a heartless. timone and pumbaa or at least pumbaa had big hearts for taking simba in. Thumper from bambi was just as innocent. Etc. They are restored at the end but its still 2 spooky 4 me. I wish they had had the lore be a good person would simply have their heart return to kingdom hearts whereas a dark person (disney villan dark) would become a heartless.

Here is another thing that has got me: So I understand the keyblade releases the hearts of a heartless when one is killed by it. but what about a heartless that is killed by something other than a keyblade/ do they just cease to exist and not return to kingdom hearts? Do they return to kingdom hearts or no?

So in conclusion, 2 spooky 4 me. anybody here to help me clear this up?

You're basically right on every front. Like you saw with Sora, almost anyone (except the Princesses of Heart) can become a Heartless, no matter how good a person they are, which is why Sora has to do what he does so they won't have to stay that way! It's a very dark reality to fight against, which is what makes the series so surprising.

Kingdom Hearts 2 (I believe) makes it clear that if someone else destroys a Heartless, they evaporate for a while and then reform somewhere else, often nearby. But if the Keyblade is nearby, their hearts are freed, instead. Again, that's why Sora has to do what he does: defeat Heartless so that they'll be freed, defeat bosses (Heartless and Disney, respectively) so that the Heartless will stop attacking regular people (they'll always attack Sora, because they want to stop the Keyblade) and finally, do whatever it takes to beat the game, so that things will get better overall.

Well my question is, If the characters of both the lion king and bambi words became heartless, how did they get restored if they became heartless if it requires the keyblade to free them? were they all heartless that were freed?

The Disney characters were all freed at the end of KH1, if not earlier. At the end of KH1, Sora defeated Ansem and closed the Door to Darkness. For some reason (this part isn't explained), this restores everything to normal. Leon and the Final Fantasy characters never explained why, they just said that it would happen, and it did. So once the door was shut, every world destroyed by the Heartless, and everyone on those worlds, is brought back to their regular place in their regular forms.

The only people who are still lost are Sora, Donald and Goofy, and Riku and the King, whose stories go on into Chain of Memories.

Simba and Bambi never became Heartless, though... they became Summon gems. This was never really explained in-game, but I guess we can assume that, if a world has been restored, any heart that became a Summon gem is recalled back to its own world and restored to bodily form.

I know what you mean by the 2spooky4me stuff, though. It's that creepy moment when you realize that all those Heartless had to come from somewhere, and those Summon gems exist, so... yeah, dozens Disney worlds were ravaged and hundreds of different characters were torn apart by primordial darkness monsters sometime before KH1 starts. Pretty disturbing when you really think about it.

Do you think that the heartless are actually attracted by the light because they want to be destroyed? They say that the heartless swarm in the kh3 demo trailer formed the sos

I doubt it. Heartless are said to be completely instinct-driven, which means they focus on about one thing: self-preservation. Which, in their case, means making more of themselves by ripping out others' hearts and destroying the greatest single threat to their existence, the Keyblade wielder.

Otherwise, if they wanted to be destroyed, they'd crawl up to the nearest Keyblade wielder and provoke him into bashing their heads in. They probably wouldn't just swarm everywhere and destroy worlds randomly.

Light beckons darkness, heartless feed on darkness and where there is light there is darkness. The larger the light the greater the darkness to be found. I believe for that reason they are drawn to the light in order to feed on the darkness the light produces. Also while it's just a theory I've suspected for awhile now that heartless are not meant to be malicious. Rather they exist as part of nature so they must have some kind of purpose, and I believe they are a two fold purpose.

1. To guard a lost heart while it sleeps, kind of like a living snuggly blanket but because the mind of the heart is asleep the creature is left mindless unable to distinguish friend from foe. All that's left is the nature of darkness to drive it, and darkness's nature is to grow and consume. So what should be a natural form of protection for the heart after losing its body instead ends up quickly becoming a living a prison.

2. As kind of like an immune system for the world as a whole. The world thrives and is supported by light but light breeds darkness, it naturally creates a force that could destroy it. And so this falls back to being drawn towards the light, they are drawn to the light not to blot it out but to consume the excess darkness that the light produces which then in theory would protect the light. They consume the darkness and contain it within as part of themselves. But it doesn't quite work how it should because the heartless attack and feed on the source of the darkness and light directly, the hearts within things. This in turn causes their number to not only get stronger but multiply as well and so they quickly become cancerous to the stability of the world.

The way I figure it, Heartless are a sign that the current world is an unstable mess. When darkness was born the world had to account for it in some manner but the problem escalated quicker than it could resulting in the almost complete destruction of the world. What was left was tattered pieces and small bits of light, enough to rebuild something liveable but not enough for the world to ever become stable. And people's fear of the darkness lead to them quashing and shunning it wherever it cropped up so it was never able to take its proper place in the world further preventing the world from healing.

That's my theory anyway, that the heartless exist to protect the light but instead end up hurting it and making the problem even worse.

Ehhhh saying the exist to protect light is stretching it for me but I do agree they exist as imbalance. Like the old theorizer Grass/gelandporn once said the legends of the war say that darkness "was born" in peoples hearts. Yet since the Xblade is made up of light & dark that must mean darkness already existed in some form.

Aka what was "born" in peoples hearts at the time was the heartless as people gave into their lesser natures in their war for the light of kingdom hearts. The heartless are basically darkness out of control. A reflection of peoples abuse and quickness to give into it.
They mindlessly spread and consume like darkness does. It's in their nature as it's in darknesses nature. But I agree with Hirokey that this doesn't mean they're malevolent. Fire also consumes air and burns whatever it can to spread, it's not evil by default. Water can both give life and take it and so on.

Darkness is just a facet of nature that humanity has thrown into imbalance with their emotions and greed. The heartless represent that imbalance. Light too isn't neither good nor bad, it can be guiding but as the keyblade war showed it can also be blinding. It was so appealing that people warped light into dark and reverence into greed.

I've always just felt the issue was more with people as more of the lore was built I guess. Light & Dark feed on peoples emotions and it's peoples emotions and ambitions that give darkness the form of Heartless.

Just my two cents.

Edit. Think of it like this. Before Xehanorts meddling heartless were unheard of in the realm of Light by even keyblade masters. Xehanort happens to find one in Diz's basement one day, experiments and the next thing ya know they're destroying worlds.

Basically like any tool or object they aren't truly dangerous or malevolent until someone uses them in that way.

Also, we don't know if the victims of fallen worlds became Heartless, all Nomura's said on the matter is that time stands still for them.

When the Door to Darkness was closed, OP, it acted as a reset button and most of those worlds were brought back to the light, and its inhabitants, no matter what state they were in, were returned to their homeworlds.

It was a dark fate, but not one they were aware of.

Also, Vulpeus, we don't know anything about the nature of X or the characters in it. We're working on speculation, but a character can be dead and still living in the Realm of Sleep. It's the world that dreams them up, not the people in the world.

But they aren't, they are asleep, that's why yen sid had this sleep training
You seem to be incredibly confused. They weren't asleep, Sora and Riku were sent into the Realm of Sleep itself. They gained the power to wake sleeping hearts but the ones they're out to save is the other trios.

The people of the keyblade war are long gone and it would be a horrible idea to bring them back because their war would return with them. Chi even being in the realm of sleep is just a fan theory at the moment to begin with. A decent one thanks to Chrithie but the exact nature of Chi is yet to be explained in detail.

I dunno if they're just asleep, but I'm not naive enough to actually believe that they're actually dead. It's Kingdom Hearts, I've come to expect that NO ONE stays dead, even countless millennia later.

It's wishful thinking on my part. That, and it just fits better with the talk of "lifeless keys" that are all just impaled in the dust at the "Keyblade Graveyard." I mean, it looks like one of those mass graves for wars from real life. The thought that tearing the world as they knew it asunder only resulted in them snoozing for thousands of years is... eh. Takes something away from that image, lessens the impact, maybe?
