Good anime VS Classic anime - AnimeNation Forums

Basically, they're discussing what separates a good anime from a classic anime. I thought it was a pretty interesting subject and I wanted to know your thoughts. What makes an anime good? What makes it classic? If it's really good does that make it classic? What about vice versa? Discuss.

I feel that when something can withstand a long time of popularity, and has lasted with a timeless quality that's good no matter how many years have passed since it came out, you'd deem it a classic. For instance i'd say that Yu Yu Hakusho, and Cowboy Bebop were good animes when they started but over time you look back and watch them again, obviously the age is apparent but the entertainment is still so polished that you realize it's a classic. Watching Naruto, Bleach, or Dragonball Z will never make that status widely, and with DBZ it's apparent. They're popular animes, but they're also very weak in story sometimes, and that's why you constantly have ppl in the Naruto, and Bleach thread have so many negative opinions, but they can't drop the series because at some point it was very interesting, and everyone wants to know what's gonna happen next. As soon as those animes are done, i doubt most will even look back at them, because the next best anime will come.

That's definitely not a problem with shows like Yu Yu Hakusho or Cowboy Bebop

Classic series also tend to have more impact than solely for them being good series. For example, Dragonball is considered a classic by many because, well, it basically injected new life into shounen fantasy, becoming the poster-boy for the entire demographic. Cowboy Bebop is considered a classic because it tremendously broadened anime's appeal, especially in foreign countries. I guarantee you that, when people in the US saw this show for the first time, some of them had no clue what anime was but thought, "Damn, this show is amazing! I want more!" Because of that, more anime and manga started coming to the US.

A good series is just that: A good series.
