Okay, so if you've completed X or at least seen the ending of it, click the spoiler tag below:
Spoiler ShowFirst off, I've had this idea in my head for a while now, but to explain what I mean I'll need to list a few things: 1. We are well aware that our character (and possibly many other wielders) may be trapped in a world of sleep, or inside the book of prophecy, or sleeping in some pods. 2. This was proven when Maleficent showed up at the end with present KH timeline knowledge.
Now, my theory is kind of dark, but what if the game mechanic of us flipping through missions like a book is actually a story mechanic, and we're actually travelling forward and backwards in time to the point we feel is appropriate for us. So everytime we fail a mission by losing our HP, a version of avatar is actually dying; a new version of us is then created by the books memory to before we died, and that's why when we fight a raid boss (which is a creature outside the book's timeline due to whatever Tetsuya Nomura wants to call it (the accumulated darkness from our efforts escaping (as explained when we learn what GUILTING actually is))) we can see that previous version of ourselves desperately trying to aid us in it's effort to take down the raid boss. In short, every time we fail, our little avatar dies, and we continue to make it suffer over and over again until our objective is fulfilled.
