I'm sure if they put in effort to try and find a good asian actress to play Motoko they would find one out of hundreds of possible canidates

If you can't think of any on the top of your head...... the studio is not gonna invest in someone who can't lead a box office and their are no A list or even B list Asian actors of age.

As of right not the feedback to this film is mix people are aware its wrong b tu they seem to like scarlet enough to still go see, its probably gonna do fine.

"[An Asian-American actress] couldn’t have debuted as the daughters of John Ritter and Sean Connery, as Johansson did in her early films. She likely wouldn’t have gotten her big break as an equestrian-loving teen in Montana opposite Robert Redford in The Horse Whisperer. (She might have made a good Rebecca in Ghost World.) She couldn’t have effectively played an outsider in Tokyo in Lost in Translation, which catapulted her to stardom, or a Dutch painter’s muse in Girl with a Pearl Earring, or Woody Allen’s muse in Match Point, Scoop or Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She couldn’t have played a London magician’s assistant in The Prestige or Mary Boleyn in The Other Boleyn Girl. And most of all, she never, ever would have been cast as the Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So how does an Asian actor become famous enough to play an Asian character?"

Who says only a A or B list actor can pull in a crowd? There have been plenty of films with lesser know actors or actresses that have done great at the box office. This movie would have done great even with a lesser known asian actress due to the popularity of the anime and it being a sci fi action blockbuster

People love to tell you white actors are chosen because they're box office draws without telling you how minority actors are supposed to make a name for themselves if they don't get casted for anything. They could've just as easily surrounded an Asian actress with A/B-listers if that was their concern. The fact they even tried to make Scarlett look Asian is fucking horrible.

Ghost in the Shell Publisher Addresses Scarlett Johansson Casting Backlash - IGN

Kodansha, the manga publisher behind the Ghost in the Shell series, has weighed in on the controversy over Scarlett Johansson's casting as Major Motoko Kusanagi.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (via Kotaku), Kodansha's international business director, Sam Yoshiba, said that he was impressed with the respect being given to the manga.

"Looking at her career so far, I think Scarlett Johansson is well cast," Yoshiba said. "She has the cyberpunk feel. And we never imagined it would be a Japanese actress in the first place. This is a chance for a Japanese property to be seen around the world."

Business man gonna do business tbh Why would he say something against the film? Of course he's going to say something positive. This is about damage control and how much money Kodansha is about to make off of this film.

And how many times have we heard "It is amazing how much respect is being paid to [insert property here]" when a film is in development? It happened with Byrke over The Last Airbender when they said they were in contact with M.Night and the studio, it was said when DBE was being made, Batman, Superman, BvS, and I'm sure it was said with a million other non-original properties when adapted.

I don't even know where to begin there. How do you not even considering casting a Japanese actress for a Japanese character? And why is a Japanese property that's apparently so amazing it has to be seen around the world unable to keep its Japanese feel for audiences to wanna see it?

You can try and justify that using business logic all you want to; that's inherently racist thinking.

Re: Ghost in the Shell (2017)

I honestly do not get the argument of "does this character look *insert race* to you?" when it comes to whitewashing characters in animated properties. The fact is that in anime, the characters don't look like anyone in the real world.

The issue is that it's a property that was set in Japan made by someone who is Japanese and undoubtly with the true intention of the character not being perceived as any other race than Japanese.

The whole issue comes down to the fact that Scar is an amazing actress but already gets so much work, and the fact that the moviemakers were actually trying to make her look Japanese. There are so many great Asian actresses out there who could have easily done the job and could have been catapulted into A class stardom from such a huge role, if they weren't already.

I mean, god, it's like casting Ezra Miller as Wonder Woman instead of Gal Gadot and them trying to make him look more like a woman. Diana is supposed to be played by a woman, the same way that Ghost in the Shell should have had a Japanese lead, especially since they were actively trying to make their white lead look Asian.

The whole reason people (like me) bitch about this and representation is because otherwise, this will keep happening. Do you know what it took just to get Hollywood to stop casting and coloring white dudes to play African American/Native American roles? And even then, some studios STILL do it instead of hiring the right people.

Representation and accurate casting matters.

Everyone else's points withstanding, yes. Yes, she does. Her name is fucking Motoko Kusanagi. How do you argue she's not meant to be Japanese, cyborg or not? How?

But her name is "the Major" now so clearly she is not Japanese anymore. This justifies this 100%. /s

Meh. Guess this is vengeance for the inverse-whitewashing of the Attack on Titan live action movie.

xD Nobody even liked that film because it changed so much, not to mention the original characters they added and the lack of the most popular character in the series. If that is what we are comparing this to, then GitS is truly doomed xD

nobody looks japanese in anime lol. cartoonish exaggerated features, death note had japanese and american characters who all looked the same and spoke the same language. that is a real odd defense.
