If you're here, I know you know the feeling!

There's something about the intro videos to KH1 and 2 (and the games themselves at points, but the intro videos moreso) that produces this extremely specific feeling of nostalgia, melancholy, anxiety and longing all at once. It's the sort of emotion that you might feel very strongly when you're 13 years old and then struggle to reach again in adulthood. The way they both flash through iconic moments from the games (Riku holding his hand out to you, Kairi calling for you at the end of KH1) feel almost like you're in a dream and can't work out if what you're seeing is even real ("like, is any of this for real, or not?"), or even like trying to remember events of your life that you suddenly realise never actually happened. There is an overall dreamlike quality to them in general, with sudden jumps between different scenes/times/places, characters dissolving away, floating underwater surrounded by falling feathers, etc.

I sound like a lunatic but I feel like I might not be the only one who knows what I'm talking about! Are there any other games that can evoke this feeling? I feel like a lot of games with young/teen protagonists probably evoke this. I've had a similar feeling when watching a lot of coming-of-age films and I think it must be something to do with how you interpret and process the world when you're at that formative age. I think the only other thing that has felt similar to me is Twin Peaks, and I know that show was very influential in Japan in the late 90s/early 2000s so that might not be a coincidence!

Open to non-game recommendations as well! Also feel free to call me a freak if this makes absolutely no sense.

I know what you mean but I can't recall having played something like that. The dreaminess of these cinematics is hard to translate into interactive mediums.

Purilura, an arcade game by Taito has pretty trippy visuals but it's more chaotic and comedic than ethereal.
