Re: FF 25th Ann. Ultimania

It's interesting how they've split up the series between volumes; to me its like the company acknowledging (which admittedly they have before) that there was a golden age of FFs, and with it, a classic and modern age.

I'm not saying the golden age don't include 6 or 10, but its like they needed something for the other books. I say this as someone who loves most FF games.

I dunno. Thoughts? And yeah, wish I could read japanese.

I would personally divide the games like this:

Classic/Old-school = I-V
Transition 1: VI
Golden age = VII-IX
Transition 2: X
Modern/experimental = XI-XIV

VI was really the first game to be made in the style that people came to associate with the series, except it was in 2D. I personally think of it as a flawed version of VII, which is the game they really wanted to achieve with VI but couldn't at the time. They continued on this path until the company got it trouble thanks to The Spirits Within. X did introduce voice acting and a more modern approach to exploration, but at core it was still the follow up to VIII that it was originally meant to be. You can tell. It could just as easily have been FFIX on the PS1 but with a world map and less impressive graphics.

They kind of started to drift away from this formula with X-2, being their first true sequel and all featuring chapters and missions etc. The games that followed, ie XI, XII, XIII, XIII-2 and XIV all tried something new. Versus XIII is also something brand new for the franchise. I think that this period, from X-2 onwards will be to the next generation of Final Fantasy games what I-V was for the golden age. A period of trial and error that eventually led to a stellar blueprint.

I don't think characters from outside of the main series were an option in this poll, otherwise Delita clearly would definitely have deserved to be in the top 10 (he is such a well written character, regardless of whether you like his actions or not).

Ace, Kurasame and Noctis are all present within this poll so I don't think that's a problem.

This was a write-in your response poll.

No one likes Seifer? D:
I never finished VIII, the draw system bothers me, but I liked him. I gotta get around to playing IX too.
I'm surprised Zack beat Cloud, I always felt that I was the only one who liked him more than Cloud.
Snow didn't make the list either.

Zack is everything Cloud should have been. Cloud was basically just a male Terra.
