I vote darkness since when dispelled they disappear into a poof of black smoke. That and they are the basis for heartless (and by extension nobodies), which are based on darkness.

I more inclined to beleive they are of nothingness but have the ability to use darkness. When they are killed they dissapear into nothingness like the nobodies. They realese nothing unlike heartless yet some unbirths have emblems and they all dissapear the same way. Similar to the nobodies.
