I believe that Nomura(?) stated that Roxas' lack of memories of being Sora were due to the mere seconds that Sora was a Heartless, then he became pretty much just a heart until KH2, when he became whole again.

I know why Roxas lacked memories.
I just don't get why Roxas-who had no memories- was needed to help repair Sora's memories.

i heard that roxas hold half of soras heart thats why the keyblade choses him.
plause in kh recom the memories of sora were in hes heart right so that might b the why

i find the whole memory restoration thing quite sketchy to be honest.
