Okay, as most of you have no doubt noticed, the Roleplaying section has been in decline as of late, and after several tries on Orion and my behalf, community events have been met with little to no success, even when a monetary prize up for grabs. The two of us can only do so much by ourselves, and when the community as a whole refuses to get involved in anything we do, it makes improving the section a fair bit difficult. We can't make any progress in restoring this section unless we all work on improving it.

So, for a start, I want to hear from the community about what they would like to see in the section to improve it as a whole. And I mean everyone, not just the few people who have actually shown interest in fixing the section.

don't write novel-sized posts and maybe people are bothered to read them and stay around

I just want to know where the presence of all those people that posted in the numerous feedback threads are...

You guys making these threads, shouldn't create roleplays. Join existing ones and familiarize yourself with the cast.
I just met two roleplayers that I have never roleplayed with before that joined an RP i am currently participating in. sorafinalform and Brol. Props you two, i like your manner of activity as well as posting to date.

Wanting feedback, well I can understand that.
Just as a suggestion, try rp'ing alongside these people that you say isolate themselves to their groups. Infiltration is usually the best approach to understanding your section, which is where I have to hand it to Rpangel/Evangeline and Rose for participating in numerous roleplays in the olden days.

Yes, but what if the Roleplay itself has already started? What if the Roleplay itself that you would like to join is Closed? What if the material of the RP isn't something one wants to chew on?

Personally I find the bigger issue to be that we all can't have our own little niche in a Community-wide RP - simply because we all have different likes and dislikes (See where I'm going with this?). More or less, the questions we should be answering, not asking, are things like:

  • How do we make this cater to and make it fun for everyone?

  • How do we make this into a simple, unified concept that is easily understood, while also having an overarching concept or idea for those who like to toy around with philosophies/ideas like that?

  • How do we help each other in a more satisfactory way?

  • How can we connect ourselves to each other in bonds of yum yum friendship (see also Sora) and in doing so, create a stronger Community?

The harsh reality prof, is it's impossible to appeal to everyone. Even saying using words like free/freedom aren't as effective as we'd like to believe.

The sacrifice is to force ourselves to explore what we'd unanimously say we don't like or care about, to at least establish a common ground with the interest in characters in some cases over setting and plot. It then becomes more about being participant and the feeling of being relevant, so the expectation held of yourself isn't anywhere near as high as it would be to be in a position where your critical of what you like and what you don't like. Its called just giving something a chance, if you've the means, all the more incentive to motivate yourself, that is the challenge i at least am trying to incite.

One day you break the mold with an original idea you've been slogging over for weeks into months, only to see it lifed up for two weeks to a month, but because of (see the most unnerving thing about roleplaying), well you see where I'm going with this.

Oh, I'm sorry, I merely assumed most everyone in this section had reading and writing skills that were at an applicable level, so that decent-sized posts wouldn't be a problem. I am deeply sorry that I had to make you read.

But how you could think any of my posts are anywhere near "novel-sized" is laughable. I can't even begin to wonder how you can manage a book over a hundred pages...

I have. Perhaps not so much at the moment, as I typically don't like jumping in well-underway stories (I feel like a hindrance of sort in doing so), but I did in the recent battle tournament that, unfortunately, died. Battles aren't largely my preference and I haven't really had a battle outside of a roleplay, but I joined it all the same, in hopes it would succeed. But it didn't.

That, however, is one of the things I've noticed: people not following through with things. You were there, so you noticed as well as I what happened with that tournament. It had 16 people signed up to be in it. And what happened? It died, because at least half of the people who originally signed up for it disappeared. Same thing happened with the Roleplaying Academy and numerous roleplays. People saying "I'm interested" or "Count me in" and never doing anything.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not implying the case is always the same with everyone. That would be highly presumptuous. I know stuff happens in people lives that need their attention or affects their online time, as it has with me several times before. However, what is annoying is when people do it, but are still active enough to be involved with whatever it is. That's just laziness, if you ask me.

I meant for these to be things pertaining to the Section, as well as individual Roleplays - aka my brain went one way and typing went another.

Which is why I'm asking people what they would like to see done. At the very least, community-wise, if people see more things they like, and they start becoming involved more in community events/discussions/etc., then the problem I mentioned will begin sorting itself out.

Why not compile of list of all RPers currently active - also have for each of them things like contact info, gamertags, etc; IE

How can we interact more more

Honestly if you want to be 100 straight up, the problem is we have people who just don't post as they are supposed to. The RP rules say you have to follow a certain set of rules and people don't follow them. Yea stuff happens but if you can get on and check whats going on then apparently it isn't life changing enough for you to not be able to post at all. College is definitely a life shifting thing, but when your not sleeping, in class, or at work you have hella free time! Just other things on your mind that you would rather do aka video games TV sports Facebook porn... I mean lets be honest.

Honestly my solution is the bare bones rule enforcement. If the rules say post daily, then you better be ready to post daily. Let's not be sticklers about it, but if I say post daily, you better be posting daily with probably 2 days max out of each week where you don't post . If you can't oblige then as the rules say... DON'T JOIN! Apparently your life isn't accommodating enough for you to RP with the cool kids haha but our problem comes in where people say they will and don't. Thats when we should start kicking people out of the specific RP they failed to post in and handing their characters over to other people, or simply dealing with the lack of participation according to the relevancy of their character. Turn them to a NPC. Give somebody a Powerplay or God-Mod pass to utilize the unresponsive RPer's character (Not a physical/electronic pass, but verbal recognition). Then tell the user who failed to post the consequences behind his failure to act. Whatever it takes to get their character moving.

Another thing that would help is if there was some type of way to see the people that continuously join RP's and just stop posting like that. Then people who make RPs would have a better understanding of who to accept and who not to accept in the first place. It would also add a sense of urgency to the people who quickly acquire a bad rep of causing RP's to go Zombie. Then the people who aren't serious about posting will be labeled and hence forth known throughout the RP section as people to be cautious about.

Another solution that would help is if the RP's had more action involved in a more continuous fashion. Sure i love the ability to make my own character and decisions, and the rare mega battles are fantastic, but if i can't kill hordes of Heartless like it was Ninja Gaiden and eventually run into the occasional PvP battles, then im gonna get bored real quick. And slaughter hordes of heartless any ways. The RP's are so story focused that the makers don't want to get everyone involved just yet. so they're always saying not yet, then while people are stalling and not going places where the plot still needs to unfold, they get caught in situations that are dull and make them lose interest quick. More action! RP makers must keep the story moving forward no matter what! If Twilight Town is gonna explode. Then the people in the RP better be POSTing enough to where they know that and have left the premises OR have TOLD somebody why they can't and when they will be able to.

With all that said there is a lack of honesty and integrity that the RP players and makers must gain. We can point fingers all day, but in the end your still gonna have a zombified section. 1.) Enforce the Rules 2.) Label the RP Killers 3.) Add more action! (Unless its a love story. Then more love! Same for any other genre of RP) 4.) More honesty! 5.) Which i didn't talk about, but we should also label the level of experience like i have recently seen some RPs do. Tell them that this is a RP for Advanced RPers play at your own risk. Or this is for Beginners Keep things simple! Whatever is necessary for everything to be more friendly to the common RPer.

Oh yea... Updating summaries as the RP progresses would kill alot of time as well. Keep a summary on the first page saying how the RP has progressed and where the RP currently stands. If it has prequels then have summaries of those on the same post, right above the summary dealing with whats going on now. Even though you can't really complain about people making huge post, a summary would help those lazy readers such as myself haha, but this would also attract more people to RP.

Ehh, I won't talk about the problems and 'why' things are the way they are right now, I'll just be beating a dead horse with a lead pipe...

Honestly, I just can't seem to get into anything other than normal Roleplays. Therefore I can't see myself getting involved in many offbeat projects. I'd love to join a RP with some of you guys in it, but it seems that either it's not the type of genre I'm interested in, it's way too underway already, or it's a concept that hasn't been started yet.

I know that for me it's just that I'm trying to find time. Everyone understands the hectic life schedule thing; between work, family/friend time and school work, it's all about trying to find free time where you can get your brain focused enough to come up with a decent post that makes sense to the other RPers instead of getting lost in translation from brain to computer.

And I understand needing to enforce posting rules; but at the same time you also have to know when life is getting in the way too much for someone to get on for longer than just doing a quick check. Maybe some kind of buddy system, where you could give your characters over to someone that you trust so they can watch them for a bit would be a good idea; but I don't think forcing a huge penalty on someone that posts consistently, if not always in a timely fashion, is a good idea. Because unfortunately, I'm one of those RPers where if I say I'm joining, eight times out of ten, I'm in, but I am slow with getting the posts up. I'm trying to work on that, but that's just the way it stands.

I think everybody deserves their opinion, so I'm not going to dispute what your saying ED. All I know is regardless of a story and its progress people still have to be doing stuff. Some people are just waiting cause they wanna see what happens before they post. I guess its because they are afraid of losing their characters, but thats retarded to me. Just keep the RP moving, or let it die. I think its pretty simple. Like now. Im about to start moving forward in these RP's regardless of what happens with the people I was interacting with, because they are simply taking to long. If you got 5 characters, Im pretty sure you can post as one, to the least. Just to help the motion of the story or the people who are stuck because of you if anything, and this is hypothetically of course. Thats why i would travel by myself causing havoc, because no one else seemed to notice that if one person post that could motivate someone else to, which could possibly create a continuous chain. Instead they do this the opposite way and don't post cause they are waiting, then another reads why one person isn't posting and decides the same thing, then a continuous chain again.

You can't change human nature easily. I've never seen a perfect or even effective method of keeping people interested in RPs, no matter how well designed it was. No matter what you do, a fair amount of people will be inactive or drop out every time. The obvious, and for the most part only solution is a rise in membership, but that's much easier said than done.

And sorry about the inactivity lately.

that comment was more of an inside joke/jab at jezza but yeah ok sure lol
should have prolly specified

it's true though, i have lost patience with roleplays because people make these ridiculously long posts recapping everything that's been happening for the past 10 pages because they've been temporarily inactive. then they add another million paragraphs of what new is happening to their character(s) with long-winded descriptions of every detail and i'm just

yeah

decent =/= oversized

dunno if this is a problem nowadays though, it used to be when i roleplayed more. especially the recap part.

Hahahah wow, this thread just read my mind as of late. I've just started logging back into the site because I have been having a lot of free time on my hands, as Dream has stated one of the problems for posting with her. Honestly I think part of it is all the people who really RPed a lot back when i was younger was probably because we were younger and forums were kiiinda sorta bigger then as opposed to now, so a lot of people left KHI.

I think what I'd like to see happen is a better, general interest in RPing. Some people just don't do it anymore. I think maybe all the RPers here, who are really active and constantly RP still can make a really good RP that we can all join and have fun with, and in seeing how active the RP section is,maybe that will attract some attention from past RPers, or people lurking around the forums. When a topic/thread is active, people WILL notice. Especially in the RP section which has been declining. ow, I ALWAYS notice a new post cuz theres only like 3 threads. I know back when Organization XV was around (an RP I believe someone said was completed) I FOREVER saw new posts there, to the point where it made me wonder how/why it was so good. I think I even JOINED at one point. But thats also because it was open to a point where someone new to RPing at the time could join in with easy access. Summaries like in Takushi Rena's RPs are a big help for people who need to catch up. I think these elements could possibly help? / Build the foundation for solutions?

Also, it depends how committed people are. for example, I had a falling out and dropped out of KHI for a WHILE. Like YEARS. But Aphex and Takushi Rena kept the RP of Traces of Solitude going. Just the two of them ( I think) and ENDED it. They were THAT committed.

On another note, veiwing the amount of people looking at the role play section at this moment, it is 13 PEOPLE. Now 13 PEOPLE are here, and looking at these threads, we need something to attract those people into becoming interested and STAYING.

At this point, after having tried projects and contests galore, I think the best course of action is to stop trying.

By "stop trying", I mean to say that we should stop trying to engineer roleplays for the section's current climate, and instead try to simply have fun. This is fairly difficult for someone like me -- but even still, I don't think we can misstep by returning to the core of what makes roleplaying enjoyable.

Let's think of fun ideas, present these fun ideas, and take them whither we please.
Regimentation, order, and detail can all coexist with a laid-back atmosphere.

I like that. All we might need is just more roleplays to join...
