Hey everyone I just graduated from high school about a month ago and I am planning on going to college this coming fall. In these last few weeks I have been brooding a lot about what the future holds and I have read a ton of other people's personal thoughts on this topic, and from what I have seen life seems like it will turn out to be the same monotonous crap day after day without much fun at all... and this is starting to make me seriously question what I should with my life. Am I just going to be miserable and depressed all the way up until retirement? Any thoughts or advice on my situation?

Life is unpredictable, and it changes dramatically after high school. If you're going away for college, you are leaving your old life behind. New faces, new ideas, new friends and new experiences. You will change, your outlook will change. For better or for worse? Depends on what you get into and how you take it.
You have a choice on how life will be for you. It's what you choose that makes life "fun". It sounds corny, but follow your heart. Seriously, i have had this talk 3 times today. It must the the theme of the day for me. The only thing keeping you from enjoying any of the wonderful things life has to offer is yourself, and only you can change how you see things. If you truly believe that what you're doing for your future, then things will go well for you, because you will put in the effort to make it so, and trust me, it won't be boring at all. It will be exhausting but it's rewarding.
College is great, at least my experience is and not at all what I expected. Life before was a drag, but it just made me appreciate new experiences even more. The future isn't always what we expect. We have the power to shape our futures. Sometimes we have to make drastic measures to satisfy our wants and needs, but its necessary if we want to be happy. If you're looking for excitement, join an activities club. or go out and do things with the friends you'll make. Be spontaneous, thats what college is for in some aspects. TRY NEW THINGS. (that wont hurt you)
I know it might sounds cliché but what happens from here on out is really up to you. Life doesn't just give you things. You kind of have to set yourself up to receive the gifts you're after.
At the least, all I can say is don't sweat it. Just take it as it goes if you don't have a plan. And when you have an idea of what you want to do to, follow it. If it feels right, you're on track.

I stopped reading there; all I have to say is that my social networking expanded fivefold within two years of college.
Life has considerable potential to go uphill from high school...Although I fear there's a chance your problem might be more internal than I think.

Depends, if you're an introvert: then yes, it will be downhill until virtual environments come out not going to lie. If you're an extrovert, or at least don't mind talking to others, I can imagine it would be easier with friends. I can't really say, I have only my perception to rely on as do others, but from what I've seen, this is the general path. One thing that is nice is you can do whatever, especially if you're in a dorm. XD But also, because of that you have a lot of responsibility to do what you set out to do in college. So it's a give and take. My experience is, vast majority of colleges just want your money, so you have to be an extrovert to get anything out of college.
As an introvert I'd have to say that this isn't always true. My first year of college went pretty well despite the fact that I don't have an easy time making friends. If you put yourself out there then you'll find people you like to be with. I'm no social butterfly but I was able to make some wonderful friends and quite a few nice acquaintances as well. As Fortissimo said, life really is what you make it, and if you want it to be boring, you can make it boring, but if you want it to have some sort of meaning, I'd say generally that is possible, if not always in the way you want it to be. To be honest, my life felt MUCH more monotonous during high school than after I graduated.
