/Hey, check me out, I'm actually updating. Dive into your bunkers.

And if you like this chap, you all better be grateful because I wrote it last night until about two in the morning and was practically dead for school today. Inspiration's a bizn0tch, it hits at the most inconvenient times.

Notes: For the whole "Archipelago of Fate" thing, that's just my name for the mainland and islands that make up Sora, Riku, and Kairi's home. I figured there'd be more than one other than the mainland ... and a grouping of islands is an archipelago. So Destiny = Fate, there you have it. This chap doesn't have much excitement in it; just some reflection, SoKai fluff, and a flashback, the latter of which I'm very excited about, considering it was what I spent the better part of my night perfecting./

Chapter Two: A Far-Off Memory
[Kairi's P.O.V.]

Half an hour after we had read the King’s letter, Riku, Sora, and I met back in town at the mainland, counting change out of a small bag.

The only way we had to travel off this world was by way of gummi; unfortunately, none of us owned one. But ever since the Archipelago of Fate had been destroyed and remade, an interest in travel had sprung up among the people and it was now possible to buy a vessel.

Though we didn’t have enough munny among us to buy something really good, all we needed was a ship to take us from here to Disney Castle. Between the three of us, we had come up with....

"Four thousand, one-hundred, and sixteen munny," Riku proclaimed, dropping the last colorful chink back into the pouch. He weighed the small sack absently in his hands, head turned to face the mainland’s one and only Gummi Garage. It was dark out now, and the town square was lit by numerous lamps around the perimeter. School was a few blocks away, and Sora and Riku’s houses were at the base of the mountain. My own was located on an island slightly bigger than the one we spent our days on, but much closer to the mainland.

"That’s got to be enough," Sora said, gesturing to the munny pouch as we approached the Garage.

"Didn’t you spend a year looting Heartless for their goods?" I asked him teasingly, giggling a bit.

"Yeah, but I left all that stuff with Donald and Goofy! I didn’t think I’d need it so soon." he sighed and folded his arms back behind his head in a characteristic pose.

The gummi mechanic was a short, yet strongly built chestnut-haired man who was sitting outside his workshop, whittling away at what looked like a gummi block in his hands. He glanced up as we neared, putting aside his tools and standing up.

"What can I do for the three of ya?" he asked, placing large hands on his hips as he surveyed us.

"Uh, we’d like to buy a gummi ship," Sora said, trying to find the right words.

"It’s very urgent," Riku cut in shortly. "We need one to be ready to fly now, for long-distance travel. We have a little more than four thousand munny. Do you have anything?"

"What do a bunch of kids like you need a ship for?" the brown-eyed man asked, squinting down at us slightly.

"We have important business to take care of," Riku continued.

"Please, it’s an emergency," I said sincerely. "We have to leave."

The man ran a hand through his coppery hair and seemed to consider us momentarily, before turning around and gesturing inside the Garage with a dismissive wave.

"Eh, I’m not even gonna ask. I’ve got something here for thirty-eight hundred munny. S’not much, but the endurance it has is better than you would expect." we followed him inside the well-lit area, big as the beach on Destiny Islands and tall enough to tower over us. Perhaps half a dozen gummis stood in line, each looking like toys belonging to some giant kid. The mechanic led us to the second-to-last one, a blue-and-green-blocked ship that was smaller than the rest.

"She’s yours for that price. I’m not takin’ a chink less either, got it?"

"Got it!" Sora said cheerfully. Within five minutes, the transaction was complete, the other colorful vessels cleared so that we could launch directly out of the open ceiling.

"Thank you!" I chirped to the man, waving as I dashed up the platform of the ship on Sora’s eager heels. Watching us from the sidelines, the mechanic seemed to shake his head in bemusement.

Inside, the gummi had just one room: the oblong cockpit and the area behind it, complete with three main seats, some cabinets, and couches on the side

"I’ll be the captain! Sora exclaimed, flopping down into the middle chair. Riku made a passing swipe at his spiky head as he walked by, taking his place on Sora’s left.

"Try not to kill us before we get there."

"Hey! I’m a good pilot! You’ll see," he added. "Donald and Goofy taught me how...." as if to prove his point, he reached up and flicked on several switches one by one in deliberate motions. The gummi started to thrum beneath our feet, and I quickly sat down in the right-hand seat and buckled up. Sora leaned forward and pressed down on a black button, causing the wall in front of us to give way to a bay window.

"Buckle up," Riku said in warning, glancing around from behind Sora. I nodded and quickly pulled the strap over me, securely fastening it. I couldn’t remember how bumpy a takeoff was liable to get, since the last time I had been on a gummi ship, I was far too small to remember.

"Oh, right. Forgot about that," Sora said apologetically, cheeks reddening. He followed suit before grabbing hold of a lever in front of him.

"Let’s count off!" he said excitedly. Riku chuckled, but to my surprise, obliged. Had his time in the Darkness actually lightened him up?

"Five."

"Four!" I chimed in.

"Three." Riku again.

"Two!" I giggled as I said this, looking at Sora’s eager face.

"One!" Sora shouted, pulling back the lever. There was a blast as the vessel’s rockets fired, and I turned to look out the small, circular window on my right, leaning back against the seat as we steadily rose into the air. The view of the hanger widened into a much larger vista; of the square, then the town, then the island, and then finally the whole archipelago itself as we blasted off into the sky.

Feeling a lump rise in my throat, I lightly touched one hand against the pane of glass, whispering our home goodbye, wondering if we would ever see it again....

Sora's P.O.V.

I pulled away from the controls in the first time in three hours and leaned back, resting my hands behind my head. Okay, so it had taken longer than expected to find the nearest warphole. But I HAD found it, despite Riku’s prediction that I’d just end up crashing us all into an asteroid.

Which I didn’t.

But now we zooming through empty space, so I put the gummi on autopilot for a while. Riku was checking coordinates, and Kairi was-

Asleep.

Glancing over at her, I started up from my reclining position slightly, feeling a mixture of both sheepish surprise and embarrassment, though I couldn’t tell why seeing Kairi sleeping would make me feel embarrassed. She had seen me asleep plenty of times, napping on the warm sands of Destiny Islands, and vice versa. But somehow this felt totally different. Like I was violating her privacy or something.

Even so, I couldn’t help but smile fondly at her. She looked so peaceful, one tanned arm outstretched, resting her head on it. Her vivid red hair fell into her face, stirred slightly by her steady breathing.

Kairi had changed so much in all the time I had been gone. I feel stupid now, for not once did I ever wonder what she looked like after more than a year. During all my travels, I had always thought of her as the same short-haired, young-faced girl I had left on Destiny Islands. I never expected that she had grown into such a mature-looking fifteen-and-a-half year old. But despite the long strands of hair that now hung around her noticeably darker blue eyes, I would always see her as I did in my dreams, in those twelve months when I regained my memories. The happy islander. The Princess of Heart. The beautiful oathmaker.

My Kairi.

I blushed furiously at the unexpected thought, and how easily it had slipped into my head. I was glad my back was to Riku, otherwise he surely would have seen the expression on my now-reddened face and teased me about it. Or given me advice. I’m really not sure which would have been worse.

As my newfound embarrassment was lessening, I was able to think about how uncomfortable Kairi must have been, leaning against the cool wall of the gummi ship for support. I frowned and unbuckled my seatbelt, standing over her. Without thinking, I released her fastenings as well. Her eyes fluttered, but she otherwise continued to slumber as I carefully encircled my arms around her form and lifted her out of the chair.

Looking about, I turned around and walked slowly to the couches on the far end of the ship, Kairi’s head resting against the crook of my neck. I gently lowered her down onto the soft blue cushions, then rooted around underneath the furniture for a blanket, which I tucked around her.

"Sora...." she murmured quietly without opening her eyes.

"It’s okay, Kairi," I said softly, "you can rest."

Whether she heard me or not, it didn’t matter; she merely shifted her head to one side and slept on. I watched her for another minute before heading back, sinking tiredly into my chair- the captain’s chair, I might add. I rubbed my eyes and yawned. Maybe I needed a nap too....

"Kairi’s changed," Riku mused to my left. Pushing aside my own tiredness, I leaned back again and looked over at the silver-haired teen, who had also abandoned the controls. Despite how radically different he and I always seemed, we often thought alike, especially since our return home.

"Yeah," I agreed, glancing back at the still form in pink behind us. "I guess you have something wise to say now, Mister Hotshot?"

The silver-haired teen merely grinned at my teasing tone, and I had to smile back broadly, happy that there was no Darkness between us anymore. Kairi wasn’t the only one that had changed. I think Riku was relieved to know that we wouldn’t hold what happened against him.

"You could say that," Riku replied easily. On a more somber note, he continued:

"I mean, she’s older now, in more ways than one. I guess it comes from being left out, from staying home when we were away and having nothing to do but wait. It must have been hard on her, even when she couldn’t remember you. But it prepared her."

"She was brave, in that castle. Is Kairi a Keyblader too now?"

"Not exactly," Riku answered, looking back at her thoughtfully. "I gave her a Keyblade because she can wield one, but I don’t think she has the kind of capabilities that you or I do."

"So she can’t lock Keyholes?" I asked, puzzled. "Why else would she be a Keyblader?"

"She wasn’t chosen to wield the Key. It’s actually your fault she can fight with it at all."

"Me? But what did I do!?" I exclaimed. In response, the silver-haired teen reached over and swiped at my head again, laughing.

"Think about it! The Keyblade chooses the heart to be its wielder. And Kairi’s heart was inside yours for a while."

"I guessed I passed on some of that power to her," I wondered aloud, still taking in the fact. It made sense.

"You two have a very strong bond."

I turned quickly away and rubbed the back of my head, pretending to be suddenly very interested in the ceiling as I chuckled nervously.

"Well, even if she can’t lock keyholes or open pathways, it’s still right that she has a Keyblade. She is a Princess of Heart, after all."

"There’s no such thing as coincidence. This new journey is for the Keybearers, new and old. You, me, the King ... and Kairi. This will be her story now, too."

I thought this over for a few minutes, and we sat in silence. Finally though, I decided that there was something I needed to ask.

"Hey, Riku?" I could look back at him again, now that the conversation was heading away from me and Kairi.

"Hmm?"

"You never really told me ... why were you wearing a blindfold?"

He sighed and tilted his head back, closing his teal eyes as if not being able to see again would make him remember it. After a moment or so, he opened them again,
looking thoughtful.

"Because it was a way of embracing the Darkness within me ... the Darkness I was afraid of. I had betrayed others, and been betrayed myself so that I didn’t trust anything for a while. I wanted to see with my heart instead of my eyes, so they wouldn’t lie to me anymore."

"Did it work?"

He glanced over at me, and took something out of his pocket. I recognized it to be the strip of simple black cloth he had once tied over his eyes. "Yeah. That’s how I knew it was the right thing to do, giving into the Darkness to fight Roxas. I wasn’t so afraid of it then."

He had done all that ... for me. I listened in an almost awed quiet, until another thought struck me.

"How did you fight if you couldn’t see?"

Riku smiled a gentle half-smile, tapping his chest with one finger as he had done to me just a few hours ago on the Paopu Island. "There’s more than one way to see."

"I guess so."

Suddenly, he straightened up and held out his hand, the midnight-shaded blindfold contrasting against his pale palm. "Take it, Sora. There might one day be a time when you need to see with your heart, too."

Startled, I reached over and took the blindfold, clenching it in my hand before pocketing it. His words left a chill of apprehension in the air, but it made me a little braver as well.

"Thanks."

Kairi's P.O.V.

I stirred slightly in my sleep, Sora and Riku’s quiet voices like a soothing lullaby. The gentle hum of the ship beneath me was comforting too, and almost as familiar-

What?

It couldn’t be familiar ... the last time I had ridden in a gummi, I had barely been seven years old. I could only recall faint snatches of Hollow Bastion from when I had lived there, and that had only been since my return there with the other Princesses

Long lost memories, like a drawn-out melody finally reaching my ears, entered my sleep and colored my dreams.

I was running, running as fast as my small legs could go across the wide balconies of the castle where my parents worked and I called home. The stone stairs loomed ahead of me, far too great for someone as little as I to sprint down. I was forced to halt and jump from each of the steps, glancing fearfully over my shoulder with glassy eyes. When I finally reached the borders of the town, I clamped my hands over my ears as I started running again, trying to block out the awful screams and sounds of fighting going on around me. It was as if all the scary things I had ever imagined lurking under my bed or in my closet had sprung out to terrorize my home. Black things with yellow eyes and sharp claws. They were no more than a few feet tall, but having only turned seven a few days ago, they towered over me. Seeing them rising up from the ground and attacking my neighbors, I closed my eyes as well, too scared to think about how dangerous it was to run without seeing or hearing.

I paid for my mistake a few moments later, as I crashed into one of Radiant Garden’s fleeing residents and was knocked back to the ground. The person continued on, not caring about the little girl they had left lying in the street or just not noticing. It was then that three of the black monsters scampered toward me, and I screamed, beginning to cry.

There was a loud bang, which I would later recognize to be a gunshot, and a feeling of heat. I opened my eyes, body shaking but my sobs quieted, stunned to see that the monsters were gone.

Instead, a tall man loomed over me. No, a boy, half-way through his teens, with shoulder-length brown hair and a big silver blade twice my size in his gloved hands. He bent down, and I noticed the long scar slashed between his eyes.

"You gotta get outta here, kid!" he shouted. Without waiting for me to move, he grabbed me by the arm and pulled me to my feet, a smart choice since I was basically paralyzed by then. He turned me in the other direction and gave me a little push, making my sandaled feet stumble and take a few steps.

"Get to the ships! That way!" he said urgently, pointing. I tracked his finger and then tried to catch his gaze, wanting more help, but he was already running back the way I came, swinging his great sword down upon one of the shadow-things.

"Rinoa!" he called, his anxious word cutting through the panic as efficiently as his weapon. The desperation in his voice was enough to pierce even my young, terrified mind. "Rinoa!"

Lip trembling, I started to run again in the direction the boy had sent me, wiping away tears with my small fists and gulping for air past the heaviness in my throat. The sky was rapidly darkening, but I didn’t look up to see the thundering clouds nor the crackling lightening. I didn’t want to witness that.

It might have been an hour or a few minutes; I couldn’t tell, but all I knew was that I finally reached the square where a pack of long gummi ships were hovering, loading people on while warriors ran about the perimeter and kept the creatures back. I threw myself into the crowd, scanning each far-off face for a familiar one.

"Daddy!" I sobbed, being jostled around by the crush of legs. "Mommy! Where are you?"

I was able to push my way through and ended up in front of one of the gummi ships. Standing by the ramp, I saw a dark-haired girl who I vaguely recognized, though I didn’t know her well- she was a few years older than I, and at that age, it seemed like much more. She was being held back by another person, a green-eyed girl who looked to be about the same age as the boy who helped me had been.

"Let me go, Aerith, let me go!" the younger girl shouted, struggling against the arms that encircled her. "We’ve got to get Squall and the others!" she seemed on the verge of tears, but was doing a much better job of holding them back than I was.

"Yuffie, he’ll make it to the ships, I promise! Please, we have to get on!" the older girl, Aerith, pleaded. With a sharp wrench, the brunette, Yuffie, escaped her grip and started to bolt, taking out a few small daggers from her pocket.

The teen ran a few steps after her, holding up a long staff with an intricate top. She screamed something into the wind, there was a flash, and an almost-invisible barrier formed in front of her wayward charge, knocking the short girl back as effectively as I had been. Before she could regain her balance, Aerith had knelt besides her and taken her by the shoulders, shaking her slim form and speaking sternly, crying as she did so.

This made me cry again as well, and I turned about, calling for my parents over and over. Finally, I heard an answering voice. I whipped my head around, long red hair blown by the stormy wind as I located the source of the welcome sound. Soon enough, I spotted my grandmother, reaching out to me with open arms. I gratefully ran into them, burying my damp face in her shoulder.

She carried me onto the nearest vessel, and we sat down, me still with my head in the ruff of her dress so that I couldn’t see anything, just smell her sweet scent, a perfume like wildflowers that I had identified with her all my short life. I was shaking with each sob that wracked my form, an anguish and terror too big for my small self. Grandma rocked me gently, smoothing out my white-and-purple sundress and stroking my untidy hair as the gummi took off, leaving Hollow Bastion and its village behind forever.

"Don’t cry, Kairi-girl," she said soothingly. "Everything’s going to be all right now."

"Where’s daddy?"

"He’s here. He got on this ship."

I shifted slightly, sniffing. "Mommy too?"

Her hand faltered in its progress for only an instant. "Yes...." she said slowly, and if I wasn’t so young and upset I might have recognized the tears in her voice as well. "Mommy too." she tucked my stray bangs of hair behind my ears, freeing my face. I snuggled closer to her, already calmed by her attentions. "Sleep now, Kairi. I promise everything will be just fine."

Lulled by my grandmother’s voice and the steady hum of the gummi’s engine beneath us, I drifted off to sleep, the kind of rest that inevitably follows a bout of tears.

/Well, I hope that was as good I aspired it to be. I liked the whole Leon/Yuffie/Aerith cameo thing in the flashback. I figure Squall was about fifteen at the time Hollow Bastion was destroyed, Aerith and Cloud {who wasn't in this chap since he got seperated} around fourteen, and Yuffie about ten. Rinoa, though not present in either one of the games, was nonetheless mentioned obscurely at the end of KH2, so I assume she existed on the sidelines. Like Cloud, she probably got seperated during the destruction. So her story was just fun to have in and added to Squall's character.

And yes, I killed Kairi's mom. Oops./

Yes, I did make it myself, sadly enough. You're right, the idea for the sig came directly from the chapter. I decided I liked the ring it had after I wrote it so made a sig and matching avatar. =D

I wouldn't say that. Have you read all the great stories on here? I can't compare to authors like Thelonepickle or Golden_x_Heart.

Either way, glad you enjoyed. I wish I did have more readers though. =.=
