Chapter 1: Choices

A curious situation. I see light yet I am surrounded by darkness. I exist and yet I don’t. I am falling but I don’t know where. Such strange circumstances and growing stranger still. I can see myself. My serene face, buried deep in sleep. My sliver hair hiding my eyes. My yellow sleeveless shirt, blue jeans, and blue and white sneakers that I forgot to take off before falling asleep.

I can see a golden pulse. The pulse of life leaving my body with every beat of my heart. Is this what it feels like to die? The golden light that has left my body is now joining together. It flashes brilliantly. Once. Twice. A third time. It slowly solidifies into a form. It’s outline is hazy and hard to make out. The light slowly fades. I can see it clearly now. It is my heart. It floats gently to the ceiling, pauses and then passes through to the skies above.

Something is happening to my body now. A shadowy liquid spews forth from it and is spilling on to the floor. I watch as the last drop ripples into the puddle of shadow on the floor. It slowly rises up and starts to take a form. I see two yellow beady eyes set in what appears to be my body cut from a portion of the night sky devoid of stars. It stares straight to where I float, helplessly watching these events unfold. It then sinks into the floor and scurries off. Excruciating pain explodes throughout my body. Everything goes black.

I open my eyes slowly. My whole body aches. My eyes blinded by many strange neon signs. A black hooded figure approaches me. He or she, the cloak hides their face, pulls me to my feet. I brush my clothes off and notice that they are now white with black tendrils splashed across them. My voice is dry and faint but I manage to croak “Whe-where am I?”

“You are in the realm of twilight,” The cloaked figure replied. Her voice, for it held the tones of a women, seemed to hold an echo.

“Why am I here?” I ask, my voice growing in strength with each passing moment.

“All will be answered in time,” She replied. “For now you must come with me.”

I contemplate retaliation but I notice that she holds some sort of weapon, a dagger perhaps, and I realize that even if I were to refuse I would have no where to go. “Fine.” I mutter grumpily and follow her as she leads me away. We walk for what seems like hours. I voice many complaints and questions but receive no answer. I got fed up and shout “Where are you taking me?” She stops in her tracks.

“I am taking you to the council of the Thirteen. I am taking you to see Him as were his orders and if you don’t shut it and cooperate like a good little boy I’ll be forced to take you unconscious.”

I almost voice my defiance but she turns and around and stares at me, her pasty blue eyes alight with flames. I wither under her gaze. We continue walking. Eventually we reach a large door. She shoves me through and takes her seat before I am able to complain. I then notice that thirteen people are staring at me. Their fierce eyes seem to strip me bare and observe every fault that I possess. The eerie silence clings to the room like a thick fog. I shift uncomfortably and quickly get fed up. “Why am I here?” I shout. They break out in laughter.

“He has spirit.” Says the one on the far left. His hood is down revealing an “X” shaped scar across his face and long blue hair that cradles it.

“Yes, indeed.” replies the leader or so I assume from his position in the room, the highest chair. His hood is also down revealing his silver hair and fierce eyes.

My pent up anger from the walk here explodes inside of me. I yell at them, “Why am I here? What do you want with me? Answer me!”

“Very well,” says The Leader. “You are here because your heart has left your body creating both a Heartless and a Nobody. You are here because you possessed a strong heart which allowed you to retain your intelligence and your body as a Nobody. You are here because this is where a Nobody is born. You are here to serve me and the Organization. That is if you are the one I’m looking for.”

“What do you mean?” I shout.

He ignores my question. “What was your name, Boy.” he demanded.

“If you must know it’s Riku.” I growled.

“So you are Him.” he crowed a glint of excitement lighting his eye. “Excellent.”

“I don‘t know what your talking about but I take orders from no one.” I yelled in frustration. I blink the sweat out of my eyes and in that instant he somehow teleported directly in front of me. He smacks me across the face.

“You will obey me. You will swear your allegiance to me. You will be the 14th member of the Organization, or you will perish.”

I lay stunned on the floor. “You hit me.” I stammered. Rage breaks through my stupor. “No one hits me.” I growl. I leap up and extend my right arm. A brilliant flash of light. My hand is once more wrapped around the familiar hilt of Soul Eater. I run towards him unleashing a vicious downward slash. He lazily jumps out of the way and once more smacks me to the ground. I start to stand up when I feel something at my neck. I look and see a red blade of light extending from his hand.

“I grow tired of this child’s play,” He growls. “Join us, or perish.”
