The sun shone brightly against the clear, blue skies of the Destiny Islands. Waves crashed softly against the shores and receded, only to throw themselves towards the beach in another quiet assault. Seagulls flapped to the silent hum of the waterfall at the island's center, rustling the branches of the palm trees as they landed. All was peaceful and normal. Well - mostly normal, anyway.
Sora kicked at the sand, sending a spray up into the air. Everyone else was away preparing for their next adventure, and their Island friends were off on the mainland, probably playing some Blitzball. But how could he rest easy after knowing what they had to do next? He squinted into the noonday light.
He usually wasn't one to worry. Sweating the details was the job of his best friend, Riku. But something just felt...off. He came to the Island in their rowboat to see if there was any way to loosen up. Maybe some practice swings at the trees with his Keyblade; collecting coconuts. Or perhaps a visit to the Secret Place that he and Kairi shared? He groaned and flopped down into the sand, feeling out of sorts, head closest to the lapping waves. It tickled his ears as it swished back and forth, mussing his spiky brown hair. From this vantage point, his sea-blue eyes could only make out the edge of the treehouse and the clouds drifting by, but he could sense everything around him. The Island was his home, and he knew every nook and cranny of it.
Something hard hit his head with a heavy thunk, and he quickly sat up, rubbing his brand new goose egg.
"Jeez, what was THAT?!" He snatched up the sandy perpetrator. A gleam caught his eye, and he dipped the object in the water to wash it off.
Pulling it back out, he held it up to the sun. A fist-sized bloodred gem sat in his open palm, uncut but somehow...it seemed perfect. But hold on. Upon closer inspection, there was something shimmering inside the gem. A faint, pinkish light. It floated from corner to corner, seemingly seeking escape from its tiny prison. Was that...a heart inside?!
Sora quickly held out his hand, materializing his Keyblade in a flash of light. The Keyblade could unlock anything, in theory. So why not a gem? As he placed the object on the ground, the flickering light inside started shifting faster; as if it sensed a presence outside.
He pointed his Keyblade. A flash of light, and then...? He was falling.

Spyro was relaxing on the beach at Dragon Shores, Sparx at his side. Other young dragons were operating the boats offshore, their motors humming as they raced on the waves. The burning sun warmed the dragon's purple scales, and he curled his tail around his paws contentedly. Sparx zipped underneath his best friend's yellow-orange wing, trying to find some shade.
"Aww, c'mon Sparx!" Spyro smiled and flapped his wing, blowing the golden dragonfly away from him and sending him careening into the sand. He dug his way out, buzzing angrily. "A little sun is good for all of us!" He cocked his head. "Is something wrong? You're usually just as happy as I am to be here."
Sparx flew at Spyro, tugging his wing with that magical power he was given. It helped Spyro to collect the dragons' treasure on their past adventures; but it also allowed Sparx to interact with others. He tugged again, gesturing his head towards a small beach peninsula a bit farther down.
"What is it, pal?" Spyro stood up and followed the edge of the beach up to where his friend had been signaling. Something had the dragonfly agitated, and Sparx' instincts were rarely wrong. He just had to trust in his sense of urgency.
A few minutes later they'd reached the peninsula. And, surprisingly...there was nothing there. Spyro tilted his head towards the side, confused. Then he looked at his friend. But Sparx' gaze was fixed at a point in the sky. There was a rumble, and then a World Portal appeared. Something shot out, shouting with surprise, and landed facefirst in the shallow water. Spyro rushed forward in alarm, launching into the water with a splash, reptilian body easily cutting through the waves to reach the object.
When he reached it, he saw it was a human. The black-clad figure was swimming strongly through the clear blue water, clutching something in his palm. Spyro swam a few feet from him, head lifted high so he didn't seem aggressive. You never knew with strangers, and this particular stranger's situation was a bit different. It wasn't every day a new Portal was created in the air above Dragon Shores.
"Hey!" The human stopped swimming to wave at him. Since he seemed inviting enough, Spyro swam closer.
"Welcome to Dragon Shores, pal," Spyro churred. "Beach is this way. We can talk when we're grounded. Sound good?" The stranger nodded and began towards the shore.

"I'm Sora."
"Spyro. I'm a dragon, if you don't have those where you're from," the large purple lizard said gamely. Standing, he was about to Sora's waist, and he was well over 5 feet long. Two large, slightly curved horns formed his head, and he had yellow-orange spikes running from his head to the end of his tail along his spine. Small wings and an arrowhead-like tail tip shared the bright color scheme. "This is Sparx, my best friend." A golden yellow dragonfly flitted from behind Spyro's wing, nudging Sora's hand. The hand that held the gem.
"Your friend here seems to have some eye for this ruby," Sora held out his hand, palm up.
Spyro's dark eyes gleamed with open curiosity. "And so he would. That's dragon treasure, there. But..." He paused, noticing the light. "What's that inside it?"
"I think it's a heart," Sora lifted the gem to the sun. The pink glow was moving slowly inside, less agitated than before. He sat down in the sand and held it out to Spyro. "I tried to get it out of there," he gestured to the still-open portal in the sky, "but as you can see, my Keyblade had other plans."
"So," Spyro sat down as well and carefully took the gem from Sora with a dexterous clawed paw, turning it over. He looked at Sora again. "This 'Keyblade' has the power to free the dragon's heart from the gem? And also the power to bring you here?"
"Yes."
"Whew!" Spyro brushed the spikes on his head back, not unlike a normal person might run their hand through their hair. "It's a lot to digest, but I think I got it. Sparx, do your thing." The dragonflies And tapped them gem. It disappeared in a ruby red twinkle.
"Where did it go?" Sora asked, startled.
"Sparx is magic. He'll hold onto it until we get to Bianca's. She's a sorceress who might know how to help our 'friend,' here." He extended a clawed paw to Sora. "And I did say we. I don't know much about this 'heart' business, but you seem to possess something that could help me free this dragon." He shook the sand off his scales, tail lashing, suddenly serious. "I'm going to have to ask you for your help." He cast his eyes towards the portal. "Sure; you can leave any time you want, but..."
"I'll do it." Sora stood up, brushing off the grit. "If there's any way I can help, I will. I have a bad feeling about all this." A shaft of light suddenly shot to his hand, forming his Keyblade. Spyro's eyes widened. "I couldn't free it before, but maybe this...Bianca? Maybe she'll be able to tell us why, and how this happened." He took Spyro's offered paw, and they shook on it.
Bianca was currently located in the Magic Crafter's world, not far from Spyro's Artisan homeworld. The purple dragon gestured Sora to the open portal in Dragon Shores that would take them there. But when Sora peeked inside, he could only see open sky and clouds.
"You're gonna have to hop on my back," Spyro stated flatly, amused look on his face at Sora's bewilderment.
"Will you be able to carry me?" He looked down at his much smaller friend. "I don't know if you guys have mirrors, but if you checked; I'm pretty sure I'm too big to ride you." He rubbed his head, suddenly embarrassed. He didn't want to offend his friendly New partner. Well, he hadn't meant/ to, anyway.
Spyro snorted. "I'm a magical dragon," he boasted. "I'm sure I can handle a lightweight like you!" he leapt up and grabbed Sora by the hood of his jacket, pulling him down.
"Ok!" Sora conceded, sitting on down his back.
"Ok, Sparx! Let's see if what Bianca gave us will work!" Sparx materialized an orange potion and sprinkled it over Spyro. "Don't worry pal: this only works on dragons!"
A flash of light and suddenly, Spyro was huge. He was at least the size of the adults Sora had seen earlier on the beach, and those were well over ten feet tall! Massive yellow-orange wings beat the air as he lifted off, shouting, "This is only temporary! Lasts about five minutes or so...I think? Well, she said it might not, but I'm sure we'll be fine!" Sora felt the words rumble in the dragon's chest. Soon, they were well on their way.

Bianca was a giant, upright, talking rabbit. But honestly, that wasn't really strange. She was about six feet tall with light, cream-colored fur and long, drooping ears. A vivid purple robe flowed down her back. She had a sarcastic smile on her face almost constantly, and Spyro was always making jabs at her for not yet perfecting her craft.
"Soooooo, that size potion spell-in-a-bottle thing you gave me...Was it supposed to have a time limit of three minutes? Cuz I coulda sworn you said-" Spyro began.
"If you want my help, just give me the gem," she groaned. Sparx passed it on to her. She inspected it in the dim light of the cave that she was using as her temporary home in Magic Crafters, sconces lining the walls and an assortment of wrapped herbs, trinkets, and cloth littered the walls and crevices. It was very homely, for a cave. A large maroon tablecloth covered the oval table in the room's center, and a crystal ball sat atop. Bianca walked over to it, sighing.
"I can't help him, and neither can either of you, yet." She gave the gem back to Sparx, who stored it away.
"What do you mean?" Sora asked. "How can we get the heart out of there if neither of us can help?"
She looked at Spyro. "That dragon inside is one of the Elders."
The purple dragon looked taken aback for a moment. "One of the five Elders, you mean?"
"Yes." Bianca put a paw down on the table. "There is a council of five that help to govern the dragon realms. This dragon is one of them. The oldest of them; Maegar." She frowned. "But there is a powerful spell on him. He can only be freed if you find the other four Elders."
"But if the Elders are in danger, then the king-" Spyro began.
Suddenly, the earth started to shake, dust raining down from the cave ceiling. Black smoke poured from the crystal ball, solidifying into an enormous black dragon. He was tall enough that his twisted, gold horns scraped the ceiling, sending sparks showering down. His tail was as thick as a tree trunk, and his eyes were pale yellow with catlike slits. But what was most catching was the symbol on his necklace. He wore a plain black cord that held up a Heartless insignia: a three-pronged black heart trimmed in red, with a crisscross of red thorns inside. Smoke billowed from his nose, and he spoke in a deep rumble, like a growl.
"This witch might become useful to me," he thundered. His gaze swept over the three of them. Ebony claws lashed out at an alarming speed, knocking them over and throwing them to the far wall like trees being uprooted during a tornado. He snatched Bianca, and the cave started to collapse from his girth and the blow he had dealt. Just as soon as he'd appeared, he was gone; the same puff of smoke from the crystal ball, Bianca's screaming fading into nothing as she was taken.
Then the roof came down with an almighty crash.
When Sora came to, Spyro was frantically trying to dig him out. "Hold still!" he fumed as Sora began shifting rubble around him. The dragon scooted rocks with his horns. "We've got to find the other four Elders," he said with urgency. "They'll know what to do once they're together."
Now free, Sora looked at his friend in bewilderment. "Who was that?!" he exclaimed.
"The Elders are important advisors to the king," Spyro went on, seeming not to hear. "We just have to trust what we can get from them." After a few minutes, the dust settled from his digging.
Spyro stopped. Looking at Sora, he said, "That black dragon was Owen, the Dragon King."
