A silent breeze eased through the maze of trees. Trees that seemed deformed as they leaned in countless angles and directions. Trees shades of gray with twisted branches reminiscent of skeletal hands. The sky grew dark. Clouds of gray painting over what was once blue. Clouds so thick and deeply painted one would entertain the idea that the sky was no more than a few meters high. Within human reach. Just a small glimpse of the sky was visible. Revealing the crescent shaped moon. Nothing more than a thin curved silver line. The forest was lifeless. As dead as the gruesome appearance of the skeletons that enveloped its grounds. But there was one soul within these woods. A woman. A tortured woman. A woman who wanted to live. Who needed to survive. And something else. Something else entirely.
Where am I? She thought aimlessly, the thin blanket of autumn leaves lightly crunching under her limping pace. Her ankle, bruised and most likely broken, throbbed with a pain that was foreign to her before this evening. Blue in color and swollen disturbingly, her handicap plagued her with the pain. Such pain! But she bit it back. She nearly tore through her bottom lip as she bit down on it to fight back the whimpers that desperately wanted to escape. Wince after wince, muffled whimper after muffled whimper, she moved through the maze of skeletons. Tears tugged at her eyes, a few slipping past her lips and salting her tongue. She couldn't take the pain! But...she had to press on. She had to get back to town. Back to where things made sense! Back to- her thoughts were interrupted as her eyes widened with terror. A howl. It was far off. Several kilometers away from her. Still. Far too close.
Another thunderous howl tore through the trees, breathing life into the dead forest. "No... No... No," she begged as she hobbled towards behind a tree, away from the source of her rapidly growing nightmare. She shook with fear. She trembled. Another howl. Closer this time. "No," her voice cracked, begging God to lead the monster away. Another howl, louder this time...Closer. She jumped! And recoiled from the pain her ankle made with the impact the pebbled littered forest bed. She whimpered aloud, like a beaten kitten from the pain, slapping her hand over her mouth. Her muffled sobs rang in her ears now. Not from the pain, but from the thought of it hearing her yelp of pain.
It was coming! Coming for her! Scanning her area quickly, frantically, she spotted a tree trunk several trees away from her. It was hollowed out and looked large enough to contain her. To hide her. Without thinking, she hobbled towards the tree, fighting back the painful throbbing. It was so painful her leg gave way as she fell forward, delicate hands breaking her fall. She crawled on her hands and knees the rest of the way, hearing it closer now. Much closer. But she made it! Squeezing into the small crawl space, disappearing into its darkness, she turned to face the entrance of her gift from God. Her hiding place. But that is when she saw it. It had seen her... She backed against the farthest side of the trunk, trying to distance herself from the entrance the best she could.
"Please...." she begged in sobbing whispers. "Please..." she begged louder as if to make sure it could hear her. It heard her quite well. But her pleads fell on unsympathetic ears. For what stood before her was not a creature of reason. It pulled its lips back, revealing its large teeth. Two meters tall from shoulder to ground, looming over everything before it. Fur just as gray as the sky...or the trees that surrounded them with darker shades here and there. Paws large, resembling human hands, ended in knife like claws. But what captivated her, what frightened her, were the eyes. An eerie green color that peered at her with such hate. They were glowing. Burning with green light. She could see it in its eyes; the bloodlust. It wanted to taste her blood, crush her bones, tear her flesh. Till there was nothing left.
What kind of wolf was this?! It padded towards her, large paws making virtually no sound as they touched the leaves below them. Eyes fixated on its prey, on her... It stopped. Frozen like a statue. Just staring at her. It terrified her! She sobbed silently, shaking her head in confusion. What had she done to deserve this?...What had she- BOOM! The wolf charged the tree with such speed. She yelled! Panting erratically she dug her fingernails into the dirt, holding on for dear life as the wolf stepped back. Its jaws parted as though it were making a silent yawn before an evil bark, almost a roar, rippled out of its mouth towards her. She jumped in her haven, shaking uncontrollably. It pushed off its hind legs, again rattling her sanctuary with a large thud. "PLEASE! NO! STOP!" The wolf continued. Throwing itself at the tree while barking viciously. The wood began to crack under such pressure. Its muzzle and claws centimeters from her exposed leg. Once the wolf went for her again she swung at it subconsciously, a small fist flying towards its muzzle. Her fist throbbed from the sudden contact. Silence grew then. Dead silence.
Did she hurt it? Was it leaving? Curiosity plagued her. She poked her head through the crawl space, moonlight barely illuminating her soon to be grave if the wolf hadn't left. But there it was. Several meters away was the her predator. She had indeed hit it on the nose.
And it was not pleased.
Not in the slightest.

Behowl
So this is just something I wrote after finishing this novel I read. Its not exactly the start of a story, more so just a scene of one I sorta have floating around in my head. I just thought I'd post it up cuz...I was sorta bored and I just thought people wouldn't mind reading it. And case I wasn't clear enough, yes its about werewolf(s?).
I didn't name the girl because I was planning on killing her off but I wrote that part out lol I know its pretty sloppy work because to be honest I didn't really revise anything, plus I'm not much of a writer but I just felt the need to put this to paper. I've decided to adopt the popular werewolf detail that the wolves in my story can only turn during the full moon for obvious reasons (live a more subtle lifestyle, less likely to draw attention, etc. etc.). Plus I made the time of the story ambiguous, so it could be modern times or a little earlier on. Maybe colonial times? Idk. But I'm pushing towards modern.
Behowl is a pending title.
May include vampires (most likely not). Or may drop a hint that they exist within the story's canon.
Another note: This little bit of writing is done from the girl's point of view but I was thinking of having it done from multiple POVs or maybe just the werewolf with some scattered chapters of other POVs (if I actually do this).
Well if you read this far: Thanks! And I wouldn't mind feedback. I may just try to write this or may collaborate with a good writer and probably get it done better that way.
