Why was Lea reborn with a black coat? Was it laziness from the designers or could it be something deeper?
It was likely he was wearing a coat when he lost his heart (likely to Xehanort).

It is a popular theory that Lea & Isa were two of the many citizens taken from the town & experimented on and one of the few experiments they could have been conducting was seeing how good the black coat was at protecting people from getting their hearts stolen.

Another popular theory was that Lea & Isa were in the wrong place at the wrong time and were in the castle screwing around with their stuff when Xehanort went berserk.

Knowing Nomura, though...It was probably laziness that will be explained by one of the above ideas or another idea he makes up.

Xehanort didnt went berserk. It was all planned form the beggining. But i stick with laziness too because they would have to readjust leas clothing now that he is older.

So just because he planned it doesn't mean he didn't go berserk? You can go berserk and still be in your right state of mind and do it on purpose.

Xehanort struck down each of the apprentices on purpose in an erratic and unexpected fashion. The meaning of berserk? "Out of control with anger or excitement; wild or frenzied" "operating in a wild or erratic way"

That doesn't explain for Ienzo, though. Ienzo's clothes, when he returned, were perfectly fit on him despite being a child when he vanished. If Lea were in his old clothes, the devs have likely have had him in them and fitted to his older form. Instead he was in the coat.

Laziness, yes, but definitely something Nomura will likely explain down the line because that is usually what ends up happening.

I think Namine is one of the few things Nomura hasn't made some roundabout explanation for yet. So far he's even found purpose for the moon on KH1's box haha
haha True. The only other thing he's really ignored is Sora's later Kh1/CoM "body".

Lea was revived in an Organization XIII coat in the events of the game because that was the last thing he wore when he became a nobody. He was revived wearing the coat from Nomura's point of view so he could give Lea a brand new outfit for Kingdom Hearts III and it either wasn't done yet or he didn't want to spoil it. I don't believe it was laziness. Axel was a very late addition to Org. XII. Anything could've happened after BBS. If I remember correctly, Dilan was wearing his guard outfit and Even was wearing his lab coat.

It was likely just laziness, or for the sake of plot convenience. Nomura obviously wants to save a new outfit for Lea for KH3. It's kind of like the inconsistencies in the Org Member's wearing their hoods up in KH2 based on if they've been revealed yet. Days never has any of them in their hoods because all of their appearances had been revealed by the time the game was made, so there was no point in hiding their appearances. It's basically not something really tied to the story, but to the game/players itself.

Similarly, all of the new Organization Members use the exact same cloaked model, but obviously in KH3 they will all be given unique models.
