Ruran is right. In fact I'll go further: without Alice it's not clear up-front that Kairi can be a princess. Maybe she is a princess in Hollow Bastion, maybe she's a normal person like Alice with a pure heart. We don't know today and we certainly didn't know in KH1. By setting Alice up at the front, the revelation about Kairi becomes more fair and realistic.

Buutttt Ales was nevar a damsal in distressors, sooo she can't isnt possibly a princess right? She never kiss kiss royal man for throne, so its not fair.

But for real, I don't know why it took me so long to realize what the real requirements for a PoH is when it was said directly to us; girls with hearts of pure light. Guess 9 year old me must not have been the best critical thinker. I guess having the title 'Princess' when you bring Disney characters into the mix can be a bit misleading though.
